Bible Study Outline

THEME: COVENANT WITH THE LIVING GOD SUB-THEME: Family and Covenant with the living God (7) TOPIC: The Essential of Godly Family- Joy TEXT: Gen. 21:6, 24:67; John 15:11-17 AIMS: i. to understand the concept of Joy in a family ii. to teach the conditions for a joyful and godly family

INTRODUCTION: Joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness or felicity that is evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires. Spiritually, it is the inner deep gladness that one has regardless of prevailing circumstances around one’s life. The texts reveal some of the sources of human joy and happiness. However, Christ has taught and shown us the basis for fullness of physical and spiritual joy. We shall study this today.

STUDY GUIDE: 1. Explain the concept of Joy with regard to family life. Gen 21:6, 24:67- Compare 1sam 1:5-7

2. What is the basis for heavenly joy with reference to Zeph. 3:15-17; Luke 15:6-7?

3. What are the conditions of Joy in a godly family? Psalm 113:9; 127:3; Isaiah 8:18; Prov 31:10-11; 1Pet 3:7.

4. How can Joy be sustained in a family? Ps 16:11, 71:23.

CONCLUSION: Only the King of kings who rules over heavens where there is no sorrow but everlasting joy; can give unconditional joy. Therefore, let us continuously allow Him lead us so we may have joy both in this world and in heaven. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Heavens rejoice when they see forgiven sinners in Jesus Christ. MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 16:11 “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore”.

SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK Isaiah 14:1a

“The Lord will have compassion on Jacob once again He will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land.”

O merciful God, let Your mercy and compassion prevail over me and my household. Choose us for greatness, favour, blessings, and surpassing peace. Remove far away from me and my household every form of trouble, difficulty, sorrow, and pain. Be gracious unto us and settle us in all areas of our needs. No matter how difficult it is in Nigeria, make us great and establish us in pleasant places where endless peace and comfort abound, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ON THE OTHER SIDE Harry goes to a psychiatrist. ‘Doctor, every time I get into bed, I think there’s somebody under it, ‘says Harry. ‘Then, if I get under the bed, I think there’s somebody on top of it. Top, under, top, under. You gotta help me!’ ‘I can cure you, ‘says the psychiatrist. ‘But it will take weekly visits over six months at £100 an hour. ‘I’ll think about it, ‘ says Harry and leaves the office. A month later the psychiatrist meets Harry on the street. ‘Why didn’t you come to see me again? he asks. ‘for a hundred pounds a visit?’ says Harry. ‘A bartender cured me for ten quid.’ How did he manage that?’ asks the psychiatrist. Harry replies, ‘He told me to cut the legs off the bed!’

“You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends…” -John 15:14&15.

Another indicator of the believer’s victory over the enemies – the devil, the world and sin- is unbroken friendship with God. This has been God’s ultimate desire since the beginning of creation. Mankind enjoyed an open and unbroken communion with God before the incursion of the enemy. Genesis gives the account of this friendship in Genesis 3:8. The relationship was so cordial that God relished visiting them “in the cool of the day”. Unfortunately, the friendship turned sour when the enemy entered and attacked mankind. Sin destroyed the cordial relationship between God and humanity and God had to send the couple away from His presence for their own protection as humans could no longer see God’s face and live.

However, the Captain of our Salvation – Jesus Christ triumphed over the enemy to give victory to God’s people, He restored the broken relationship and friendship. “For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:19-20). Through Christ’s redemptive work, we have communion with every member of the Godhead. We can talk and commune with God. We are adopted as His children (Romans 8:15). We pray to Him as our dear Father. We hear Him speak to us in His Word. He moves providentially in our lives to reveal Himself and enjoy real spiritual communion with eternal God. This is Friendship.

Imagine being called a friend of the all-knowing God who created the heavens and the earth! Jesus said: “You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends…” John 15:14&15. Kings generally seclude themselves from direct contact with their people. It is a rare privilege to have an audience with a king. But believers through Christ’s victory have perfect, unbroken fellowship and friendship with the King of kings!

This friendship must be maintained and serviced. It is important to know that friendship with God comes exclusively through Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only way to the Father (John 14:6), yet throughout the ages man has attempted to devise other paths to God through false religions or to live in such a way as to merit His approval. We cannot have fellowship with God if we reject His Son (1 John 5:10–11), dispute His foreordained plan of salvation, or attempt to find another path to His presence.

The Scripture identifies some things that are at odds with true friendship with God: the “mind governed by the flesh” that does “not submit to God’s law” (Romans 8:7) and “friendship with the world” (James 4:4). God is light, and light cannot have fellowship with darkness: “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:6–7). Another important point to note in maintaining unbroken friendship with God is that those in fellowship with God are trusting in Christ. Their sins are forgiven. They are filled with the Spirit. They believe that in all things God deserves to be glorified. They spend time in Bible reading and prayer in a pursuit of “spiritual wisdom and insight so that (they) might grow in (their) knowledge of God” (Ephesians 1:17). God’s Word, the Bible, is also necessary to our fellowship and friendship with Him. We glorify Him by submitting to His will and obeying the commands contained in His Word. “But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him” (Psalm 103:17). Our obedience to God is the foundation upon which all aspects of our relationship with God is built.

Friendship with God comes with many benefits. Friendship with world will drain you, but your friendship with God will power you up so that you can live a full life daily. When you give more importance to other relationships, you give away all that you have, including your time, attention, energy, and resources. When you prioritise your relationship with God, you receive more than you can ever give to Him. Having a relationship with God, or not having it, clearly says where your will spend all of eternity after death. Everything we have in this earth will fade away, be it riches, friendships, connections with big people, and even ourselves. Yet, one thing that will not fade away is God Himself (see Matthew 24:35).

Because of this, we should choose to invest ourselves in Him. Christ said, “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be” (see Matthew 6:21). If we invest ourselves in worldly relationships, we will only reap worldly benefits. If we invest in God who is in and for all eternity, we will reap eternal harvests.

My prayer: May we enjoy the harmony, contentment, and joy of the fellowship God has provided us with. May we follow the example of Enoch, a man who, throughout his long life, was known for “walking in close fellowship with God” (Genesis 5:24).

Have a Blessed Week!
