SIDELIGHTS: Sports writer Richard Lally focusses much of his efforts on his main passion: baseball. After collaborating with former pro player Bill Lee on Lee's autobiography, The Wrong Stuff , Lally wrote Pinstriped Summers: Memories of Yankee Seasons Past , a book that focuses on the team's history from the time the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) bought the team in 1965 until the 1982 season. During this period, the Yankees experienced great success, winning four pennants and two . They also experience "down" years, including a last-place finish in 1966. Lawrence S. Ritter wrote in Book Review that Lally "provides a useful bird's-eye view of these eighteen years and puts batter and team in perspective against the background of their predecessors." Writing in Publishers Weekly , Genevieve Stuttaford noted that "Yankee fans may love every line of it; others will find it far too uncritical." A Kirkus Reviews contributor said the book is "fueled by various passions (including scorn for the Yankee management and envy of Baltimore's) and the prose has zip enough." Library Journal contributor Jo DeLapo praised Lally's attention to players of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including , , , and an ageing , wrote that these are the players "many of us knew and loved, and their story has been neglected for too long." In Long Balls, No Strikes: What Baseball Must Do to Keep the Good Times Rolling Lally collaborates with former player-turned-television commentator Joe Morgan to discuss the growing popularity of baseball during the 1998 season as the home-run competition to break Roger Maris's record grew between Mark McGwire and . The book also suggests changes to the sport, including increasing the number of blacks in management, seeking new talent in the inner cities, and having teams share profits equally. The authors argue that "the won't save the game on its own," wrote Wes Lukowsky in Booklist , dubbing the effort "a fine book." However, Alan Schwartz, writing in the New York Times Book Review , felt that Long Balls, No Strikes contains too many "blatant banalities" that "result in … belittling readers rather than enlightening them." In a review for the San Francisco Chronicle , Casey Tefertiller called the book "provocative and entertaining," adding that, "most of all, it makes the reader want to talk about baseball, and there can be no higher recommendation." Lalley turned his focus to the Yankees once again with his book Bombers: An Oral History of the New York Yankees , this time covering the team from 's arrival in 1920 to the championship team. In an interview with Lally on ESPN.com , Rob Neyer pointed out that many books have been written about the Yankees and asked how Lally avoids the pitfall of rehashing old stories. "To make the cut for the book, a story had to offer a fresh perspective on an event or player," Lally explained. A Kirkus Reviews contributor pointed out that stories focusing on the World Series take up most of Bombers , noting that they are "told with a touch of spicy mustard." Paul Kaplan and Robert C. Cottrell, writing in Library Journal , praising the book as "sprinkled with insightful analyses," while Booklist contributor GraceAnne A. DeCandido wrote that "Lally is a fine editor and writer, evidenced in his choice and arrangement of quotes and in his own analysis and focus." Nearly twenty years after their first collaboration, Lally once again teamed up with Bill Lee to write Have Glove, Will Travel: The Adventures of a Baseball Vagabond . In this sequel to The Wrong Stuff the coauthors focus not only on Lee's time in the majors but also on his experiences after he left the limelight to play on both the senior circuit and in exhibition leagues, as well as his time conducting baseball clinics in Canada. A Kirkus Reviews contributor commented that the authors are "supreme at conveying the pure joy of playing baseball." Writing in Publishers Weekly , a reviewer called the book "a thoughtful and droll journal of an itinerant journeyman, content to ply his trade for whatever he can get out of the experience." During that period, the Yankees won four American League pennants (1976, 1977, 1978 and 1981) and two World Series (1977 and 1978). They also finished 5th three times, 6th once, 9th once and a depressing 10th once (in 1966). In the process, they hired and fired eight different managers, three of them - Billy Martin, and - more than once. The list of managers would be even longer were it not that assumed ownership of the Yanks only in 1973 (in the preceding eight years there had been but two managers, and ). So many books have already been written about these years, especially about the period when Reggie Jackson wore Yankee pinstripes (1977-81), that it is hard for Dick Lally, a sportswriter, to add much. Nevertheless, he provides a useful bird's-eye view of these 18 years and puts Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin in perspective against the background of their predecessors. Baseball fans who choke up when they recall the names , Jake Gibbs and Horace Clarke, Yankee stalwarts of the late 1960's and early 70's, will no doubt be happy to renew old acquaintances. But if names like Hal Reniff, Roger Repoz and don't give you goose bumps, this may not be the book for you. Zell's Pinstriped Blog, A New York Yankees Fan Blog. Archive for the ‘Yankees Gossip’ Category. and Hannah Davis split because she’s getting “too famous” One source told us: “Derek likes to keep his relationships quiet. In the past, when his girlfriends become famous and start doing sexy shoots, that’s when they break up. Exactly the same thing happened with Minka and Vanessa Minnillo.” Another source said, “Derek and Hannah broke up a few months ago. She wasn’t at his Celebrity Golf Classic last month. He is in Tampa and is completely focused on being fit and ready for the upcoming baseball season.” So, Derek Jeter doesn’t like his girlfriends to get “too famous.” That’s understandable. But why date some of the biggest and brightest of them all? Yeah, we get it…Hannah Davis is gorgeous. But if he wants to take his relationship to the next level..maybe he should stop going after the biggest Hollywood stars. Let’s take a trip down memory lane: Minka Kelly, Lara Dutta, Rachel Uchitel, Mariah Carey, Vida Guerra, Vanessa Minnillo, Jordana Brewster, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Adriana Lima, Joy Enriquez, Scarlett Johansson, Tyra Banks and Gabrielle Union. Hannah might very well be announced as the 2014 Swimsuit Edition cover model in the issue coming weeks…not that Jeter cares. I’m sure he won’t have trouble finding another lady friend. Good luck, Derek. Share: Like this: The Jeter That Never Was: “Fat Jeter” It’s just amazing how these stories come about. One can simply release a doctored photo of the Yankees captain to the media and everybody eats it up. Did anyone actually believe that “The Derek Jeter” would lose himself like that? If there is one guy in this league who you can count on to act in a professional way, he would be the one. If you really believed that photo was real, I wouldn’t be placing any bets anytime soon. But if you knew from the get-go, I would go hop on over to The Sports Geek. It took to set the record straight once and for all with this photo: Share: Like this: NSFW Photo: Sabathia fan has sex on a Toilet. The New York Post is reporting this morning that Derek Jeter sends his one-night stands home with gift baskets , which usually include an autographed baseball. This doesn’t sound like “The Captain”…does it? I wonder what Dr. Charles Jeter thinks about all of this. Jeter is playing the field once again, as he broke up with Minka Kelly this past summer. Here are some highlights from the article: “This summer, he ended up hooking up with a girl who he had hooked up with once before, but Jeter seemed to have forgotten about the first time and gave her the same identical parting gift, a gift basket with a signed Derek Jeter baseball,” the pal said. “He basically gave her the same gift twice because he’d forgotten hooking up with her the first time!” “He normally doesn’t go out with girls. He will have them come to his house. He’ll have cocktail parties. His friends invite girls they think he’ll be interested in. He’s very shy,” another friend explained. “He’ll occasionally take girls to a restaurant. He has a couple of restaurants that he goes to that aren’t trendy,” the friend said. “I know he’s been dating multiple girls. He likes a hole in the wall, or he likes a place that his friends own. He’s very cautious. He’ll only go out on off-nights,” the friend said. “The girls go through the back-door entrance in the Trump World Tower to avoid the paparazzi,” the pal said. Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly have called it quits after three years together, JustJared.com can confirm. “The split was amicable,” sources exclusively tell JJ of the 37-year-old Yankees superstar and 31-year-old actress. “But they remain friends. They still really care for each other.” When JJ contacted her reps, they did confirm the split. Last month, HBO premiered Deter Jeter 3K, a documentary that chronicles Derek’s journey of becoming the second player to reach 3,000 hits as a (the first was Honus Wagner). I can’t say I saw this coming. Minka’s appearances in Derek’s box and DJ3K HBO special, you wouldn’t have any clue that the two were thinking about parting ways. All that talk that he would eventually marry her and that he was “ready to tie the knot” (remember all that talk about Oheka Castle?) all goes out the window now. So, Derek…whose next? The article on The Captain is entitled: “ Derek Jeter’s Swinging Years .” “Derek Jeter is not a victory robot. He knows his last season was rough. And yeah, he’s pissed at the Yankees about that contract negotiation. The most famous player in baseball sat down with Seth Mnookin to talk his private life, the press, and the specter of his final years in pinstripes.” “We’ve talked about my story-I’m very fortunate to be doing exactly what I want to do for the team I’ve always wanted to play for, playing the position I’ve always wanted to play. The long anticipated Michael Kay wedding. Let the jokes roll in. Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay and TV news anchor Jodi Applegate tied the knot at The Plaza last night in a lavish ceremony packed with pinstripe powerhouses and skippered by former Mayor and Bronx Bombers die-hard Rudy Giuliani. Several former Yankee greats such as Paul O’Neill, and Darryl Strawberry, were among the 350 guests who turned out to watch the lovebirds exchange vows at the storied hotel shortly after twilight. “It’s a great day for Michael Kay,” Strawberry told The Post. “He waited this long for the right one. It’s amazing.” Baseball bigs, including Yanks manager and team co-owner Hal Steinbrenner rubbed elbows with TV personalities such as NBC anchor Brian Williams and Applegate’s WPIX/Channel 11 colleagues Kaity Tong and weatherman Mr. G. And actor Danny Aiello, Kay’s uncle, was on hand to fete the happy couple as were former Yanks and Kay’s YES-network colleagues , and . The president of Fordham University, Kay’s alma mater, gave the benediction before a grinning Giuliani took the helm. Applegate donned a white empire lace dress designed by Suzanne Neville from the Wedding Atelier bridal boutique. She changed her dress three more times throughout the night, a guest said. The auburn-haired stunner also sported sparkly, 14-carat diamond earrings on loan from London Jewelry, and custom silk gloves, silk velvet cuffs and a white fox fur stole. From Craig Calcaterra (Via Hardball Talk): A source close to tells me that there is a “very strong possibility” that Pettitte is going to pitch in 2011. He is doing his usual preseason workouts and has had no physical issues thus far. Moreover, the source tells me that Pettitte’s hesitation to confirm that he is coming back for the upcoming season is in no way connected to the trial, which was something that many had speculated about. I always had the feeling Andy would return to the Yankees at some point this year. I’m well aware of his dedication to his family, but the man is 38 years old and still has stuff left in the tank. It would be a different story if he was well into his 40’s and wasn’t pitching very well. The guy has plenty of years after his playing career to spend time with his family. When all of his buddies are down in Tampa getting ready for the season…don’t you think Andy is going to want to come back? For the last 20 years, pitching for the New York Yankees organization (and the Astros) is all he’s ever known. It’s not easy for these players to just give up the game.
