For the second-consecutive season, the Houston Cross Country women’s team earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award for having an Academic Progress Rate (APR) within the top 10 percent of their respective sport. This marks the fifth-straight year a Houston Cross Country team claimed the honor, after the men earned the award the previous four seasons. On the course, senior Brian Barraza made history, when he became the first Cougar to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in three different seasons. The El Paso, Texas native, finished as the runner up at the 2017 NCAA South Central Regional in College Station to book his trip to the championships. Barraza also made history in American Athletic Conference action, when he became the highest finisher for Houston at the American Championship meet since the league was formed. Barraza ran the 8,000-meter race in 25:06.6 to finish second. After the first meet of the season was rained out due to Hurricane Harvey, the Cougars opened the campaign with team top-5 finishes on both of the men’s and women’s sides at the Rice Invitational. The men’s team finished second overall with 50 points after G.J. Reyna claimed the individual championship in 19:49.72, while the women finished third overall with 72 points. The following weekend, Barraza would bring home Houston’s second individual title of the season, winning the Texas A&M Invitational in 23:51.4. Barraza led the men’s team to its second-straight top-5 finish overall with 142 points, while the women scored 202 points to finish seventh. Each of the men’s and women’s teams would qualify for NCAA postseason action with trips to the South Central Regional. Barraza’s second-place finish helped the Cougars score 203 points and finish sixth overall, their highest finish since 2004, while the women placed 21st with 483 points.
