    Comics-wise, France's Metal Hurlantand the pre-superhero American tradition (Weird, Eerie) provided his inspiration. During this remarkably long gestation period - partly the result of missing a launch deadline, partly Sanders apprehending Mills was cooking up "something special" - a hiccup occurred when a public outcry followed not long after the February '76 launch of Mills's revolutionarily gory and anti-authority Action. That October, Action was briefly taken off the stands to be cleaned up. "The disastrous press obviously had an effect on 2000 AD and stories that were originally much tougher and much harder suddenly had to be toned down," says Mills. Nonetheless, 2000 AD would remain an edgy concoction: "Action had very much a street consciousness and there's a spillover of that into 2000 AD." Additionally, "You wrote a character with some humanity in, it would bomb. You wrote a character who was totally brutal and totally ruthless, the readers would love it. John Wagner and I had both observed this trend in reader taste, so what you might call a traditional hero just didn't cut it." He happily found that the nature of the new comic gave him something of a get-out from higher-ups' disapproval: the sci-fi backdrops served to make the violence and harsh ambience seem less 'real'. An indication of just how much thought went into 2000 AD is Mills's work on the comic's look. He admired the high standards of Spaniards like Carlos Ezquerra and Italians like Massimo Belardinelli. However, though he commissioned Continental artists, he also felt them to be a little dull compared to technically inferior British ones.

    Veldmeijer, Witton & Nieuwland André J. Veldmeijer PTEROSAURS Mark Witton & Ilja Nieuwland Pterosaurs or flying reptiles were the first vertebrates to evolve flight. These distant relatives of modern reptiles and dinosaurs lived from the Late Triassic (over 200 million years ago) to the end of the Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago) a span of some 135 million years. When they became extinct, no relatives survived them and as a result these prehistoric animals cannot readily be compared to our modern-day fauna. So what do we know about these highly succsessful animals? The present summary answers this and many more questions based on the most recent results of modern scientific research. After a short introduction into palaeontology as a science, and the history of pterosaur study, it explains what pterosaurs were, when and where they lived, and what they looked like. Topics such as disease, injury and reproduction are also discussed. Separated from this text are ‘Mark explains’ boxes. Each of these explanations puts one specific species in the spotlight and focuses on its lifestyle. They show the diversity of pterosaurs, from small insectivorous animals with a wingspan of nearly 40 centimetres to the biggest flying animals ever to take to the air, with wingspans of over 10 metres and a way of life comparable to modern-day storks. The text is illustrated with many full-colour photographs and beautiful PTEROSAURS palaeo-art prepared by experts in the field. Dr. André J. Zable Foundation Baryonyx Baryonyx (pronounced bare-e-ON-icks) is a name from Greek origin: ‘barys’ meaning heavy and ‘onyx’ meaning claw. This is a genus of carnivorous dinosaur first discovered in clay pits just south of Dorking, England, and later reported from fossils found in northern Spain and Portugal. It is known to contain only one species, Baryonyx walkeri. Its fossils have been recovered from formations dating from the early part of the Cretaceous Period, around 130–125 million years ago. Baryonyx is one of the few known piscivorous (fish-eating) dinosaurs, with specialized adaptations like a long, low snout with narrow jaws filled with finely serrated teeth and hook-like claws to help it hunt its main prey. Baryonyx was about 3m (9ft) tall and 10m (31 ft) long. This dinosaur weighed in the region of 1,700–2,700 kg (3,700–6,000 lb) which is about the same as an Asian elephant or adult killer whale. However, analysis of the bones suggests the most complete specimen was not yet fully grown, so Baryonyx may have grown even larger. Baryonyx had a large claw on the thumb of each hand, which measured about 25 cm (10in) in a straight line from tip to base. Its long neck was not as prominently S-curved as in many other theropods. The skull was set at an acute angle, NOT the 90° angle common in similar dinosaurs.
