Choose a quit day in January giving yourself about two weeks to prepare. Tell your family and friends you plan to quit and ask for support. A daily e-mail, text message, or phone call can help you stay on course.. Plan a smoke-free lunch date, game night or family gathering for moral support. Anticipate and plan for challenges. The urge to smoke is short—usually only 3 to 5 minutes. Those moments can feel intense. Healthy choices include: Drinking water, taking a walk or climbing the stairs, listening to a favorite song or playing a game, calling or texting a friend. Even one puff can feed a craving and make it stronger. Remove cigarettes and other tobacco from your home, car, and workplace. Talk to your doctor about medicines to help you quit. Nicotine patches, nicotine gum, or prescription medicines can help you quit for good. Your quit coach and pharmacist can also give you guidance. For more information about local in-person support, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. For resources on quitting visit www.makesmokinghistory.org. • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

D. in Film and Television Studies University of Warwick November 1997 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the ways in which heterosexuality is rendered in the Hollywood genre where its existence is most privileged: musicals of the studio era (c. 1930 - c. 1960). In this popular film category, heterosexuality is expressed in a framework of "boy-meets-girl" amatory coupling that is remarkably amplified and insistent. In analysis that is at once sympathetic and critical of the subject matter, I show that heterosexuality in the Hollywood musical is constructed in a way that is far from monolithic. On the contrary, I find that there are in fact varieties of heterosexual identity that exist in the genre, and that they are most succinctly revealed through romantic engagement. Yet heterosexuality is depicted along divergent formulations owing to contrasting relational aims and assumptions. Building on Richard Dyer's 1993 essay, 'III Seem to Find the Happiness I Seek': Heterosexuality and Dance in the Musical, " I will discuss how the basis of these separate models is traceable to different approaches related to power distributions between men and women.
