WATERBIRD CENSUS AT . Personnel of CENRO-CSE Ilocos Norte under Engr. Sheila R. Camagon, together with a group of bird enthusiasts, conducted the annual Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) event at Paoay Lake National Park (PLNP) in Paoay, Ilocos Norte last January 7, 2021. The census aims of monitoring the populations of migrant, resident, and endemic waterbirds at Paoay Lake and surrounding areas. Almost 3,000 bird individuals belonging to 16 species were observed. The most numerous species was the endemic Philippine Duck with almost 2,000 individuals. The new species recorded in the area were the greater sand plover, Pacific golden plover, and little heron. Other waterbird species observed during the census include Great Cormorant, tufted duck, little grebe, egrets, grey heron, barred rail, and common sandpiper. Special guests at the census event were Ilocos Norte’s 2nd district Congressman Angelo Marcos Barba, also a member of the PLNP Protected Area Management Board, and Michael Agbayani Calaramo of the Northwestern University of Laoag City.
