Historical records show us the accomplishments of future Congressman Henry Hyde and his team in the 1940’s. Professional achievement tells us of the academic rigor and athletic pursuits of the 1960’s that helped shape Paul Tagliabue, Commissioner of the NFL. Trophies, awards and championships are evidence of the success John Thompson Jr. compiled in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s. While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes.

  • Voluntary Organizations for Professional Evaluation (Vopes) Grew from 15 in the 1990S to More Than 155 by 2012
In recent decades, civil society has increasingly played a central and active role in promoting greater accountability for public action, through the use of evaluation. National and regional Voluntary Organizations for Professional Evaluation (VOPEs) grew from 15 in the 1990s to more than 155 by 2012. Acknowledging the enhanced role of civil society, UNICEF and IOCE launched EvalPartners. for Professional Evaluation Organizations Voluntary This is a global initiative that promotes coordinated efforts among development organiza- tions, governments and civil society, with the aim of strengthening civil society evalua- tion capacity, in order to fortify the voice of civil society in policy-making and in promoting equity-focused and gender-responsive evaluations. EvalPartners was met with a surge of enthusiasm evidenced in the joining of 27 members, including all regional VOPEs, within a few months of its launch. The goal of the EvalPartners Initiative is to contribute to the enhancement of the capacity of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) – notably, VOPEs – to influence policy-makers, other key stakeholders and public opinion, so that public policies are evidence-informed and support equity in development processes and results. The expected outcome of EvalPartners is three-fold: • VOPEs are stronger. Their institutional and organizational capacities are enhanced. • VOPEs are more influential. They are better able to play strategic roles in strengthening the enabling environment for evaluation within their countries. In so doing, they help to improve national evaluation systems and to promote the use of evaluation evidence in the development of policies geared towards effective, equitable and gender-equality responsive development results. • VOPEs develop sustainable strategies to enhance the evaluation skills, knowledge and capacities of their members, and of evaluators more widely, to manage and conduct credible and useful evaluations.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

Historical records show us the accomplishments of future Congressman Henry Hyde and his team in the 1940s. Professional achievement tells us of the academic rigor and athletic pursuits of the 1960s that helped shape Paul Tagliabue, former Commissioner of the NFL. Trophies, awards and championships are evidence of the success John Thompson Jr. compiled in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. It is the total combination: academic and athletic excellence, focus, dedication and hard work instilled in Hoya teams throughout the last century that built men who would not only conquer the basketball court, but serve their communities. This is the tradition of Georgetown University and its basketball program.
