    Ladakh Corral Improvement Program – The History Background: Proclaimed in 1981, the 3,350 square kilometer Hemis National Park is located in northwestern India in the Ladakh District of Jammu and Kashmir State. Besides offering excellent snow leopard habitat, it harbors four species of wild sheep and goats—giving this park international biodiversity importance. Elevations in this stark arid transHimalayan landscape range from 10,800 feet to some 21,000 feet. The Zanskar River cuts a spectacularly deep and rugged gorge through the park. While the canyon is impassable in summer, in winter people can walk along the frozen riverbed. Although the vegetation is sparse, there is a diverse range of large mammals amid varied mountain and riverine habitats. Current biological surveys are needed to obtain reliable wildlife population estimates, but previous rough estimates in the existing park and the potential extension are as follows: up to 100 snow leopards, a few lynx, 25-50 wolf and wild dog. Blue sheep are the most abundant ungulate, with an estimated 3,000. Two ungulate species are endangered: the Ladakh urial (±300), and the Argali (±25). Hemis is located at the very edge of Asiatic ibex range, with an estimated ±50 individuals. An analysis of scats or droppings indicates that blue sheep are the snow leopard’s main prey, followed by domestic livestock, marmot, Tibetan hare, pika or mousehare, and such gamebirds as the snowcock and chukor partridge. About 1,600 people live in the park in 16 small settlements scattered in three valleys – the Rumbak valley (4 villages); the Markha valley (7 villages) and the Shang Valley (5 villages).

Indian Railways have recently decided to reduce the Railway Board members by 25%. About: The Railway Board is the apex body of the Indian Railways that reports to the Parliament of India through the Ministry of Railways headed by the Railway Minister of India. Currently Railway Board has 200 officials including the Chairman, Officers and Directors. Now the board will be reduced to 150 members by transferring the other 50 members to the Zonal Railways to enhance efficiency.     CHEWANG RINCHEN, MVC A legendary soldier By Maj Gen S.G.Vombatkere, VSM** Unconventional soldier December 1971. Hostilities between India and Pakistan had spread into the remote vastness of the high mountains of Ladakh. The two armies faced each other in the valley of River Shyok, occupying posts at dizzying altitudes of over 18,500 ft (5,000 m), their common enemy being the extreme high altitude and the mind-numbing cold. The Indian vanguard comprising four companies of the Ladakh Scouts reached Biagdang under the calm and experienced command of a Lt Col, a Ladakhi son of the soil. Most of the officers were in favour of attacking the Pakistani positions conventionally from the river bed, but the Lt Col had already decided to use the rugged mountain route, to attack from above to achieve surprise. His off- beat thinking did not end there. Practical experience and sound Ladakhi good sense overcame military orthodoxy; he ordered his troops to remove their steel helmets and don woolen caps as steel can cause frostbite besides being noisy in a silent attack. Water in the canteens which would have quickly frozen was substituted with a stiff mix of rum and water, and hob-nailed ammunition boots were exchanged for the warmer and silent Ladakhi “pabbo” shoes. The loyal villagers of Biagdang led by Hassan Maistry and the headman readily provided them with the shoes and caps. (Some officers who insisted on wearing their boots later lost their toes due to frostbite). The Lt Col halved the soldiers load of bedding, food and ammunition on the basis of a very rugged logic – the defeat of the enemy, he said, will provide all these, and the movement of lightly loaded troops at night would be both rapid and silent.
