The views of society on the optimal coexistence of hu- mans and animals have changed fundamentally over time. This shift in the public perception of wild ani- mals – from mere showpieces to beings with rights – is now more than ever a topical issue, especially in terms of how to accommodate these animals. This seminar addresses an important question: how best to design buildings for animals, using the example of a panda house. Abstract The study analyses the epidemiology of selected infectious diseases of 65 different species within the four families of bovids, cervids, camelids and equids in one czech and nine German zoos. It is based on a survey of all epidemiologic data since 1998. Furthermore 900 blood samples taken between 1998 and 2005 are screened for the presence of antibodies against selected viral and bacterial pathogens. The results are linked to the epidemiologic data. Introduction The concept of mixed species exhibits increasingly becomes important in European zoos. It is an important form of behavioral enrichment, it optimizes the use of space and it is of great educational value for visitors, giving them an impression of ecological connections. But until now it has not been elucidated whether the kind of exhibit may lead to an increase in the prevalence of specific infections. The aims of this study are to evaluate the exposure of zoo-ungulates to a variety of disease pathogens that can be transmitted between different species and to assess the epidemiology of mixed exhibits. We are interested in the following questions: 1. Which selected infectious agents are zoo ungulates exposed to? 2. What is the seroprevalence against these agents? 3. Is there a correlation between seroprevalence and the following factors: - animal exhibition system (single species / mixed species exhibit) - population density and animal movements - interspecific contact rates 4.

    Field Philosophy and Other Experiments École normale supérieure, Paris, France, 23-24 June 2017 New interdisciplinary methodological practices have emerged within the environmental humanities over the last decade, and in particular there has been a noticeable movement within the humanities to experiment with field methodologies in order to critically address environmental concerns that cross more-than-disciplinary concepts, theories, narratives, and practices. By exploring relations with (and between) human communities, nonhuman animals, plants, fungi, forests, microbes, scientific practices, and more, environmental humanities scholars are breaking with traditional methodological practices and demonstrating that the compositions of their study subjects – e.g., extinction events, damaged landscapes, decolonization, climate change, conservation efforts – are always a confluence of entangled meanings, actors, and interests. The environmental humanities methodologies that are employed in the field draw from traditional disciplines (e.g., art, philosophy, literature, science and technology studies, indigenous studies, environmental studies, gender studies), but they are (i) importantly reshaping how environmental problems are being defined, analyzed, and acted on, and (ii) expanding and transforming traditional disciplinary frameworks to match their creative methodological practices. Recent years have thus seen a rise in new methodologies in the broad area of the environmental humanities. “Field philosophy” has recently emerged as a means of engaging with concrete problems, not in an ad hoc manner of applying pre-established theories to a case study, but as an organic means of thinking and acting with others in order to better address the problem at hand. In this respect, field philosophy is an addition to other field methodologies that include etho-ethnology, multispecies ethnography and multispecies studies, philosophical ethology, more-than-human participatory research, extinction studies, and Anthropocene studies.

A Letter from IPPL’s Chairwoman Dear IPPL Member, We at Headquarters are all devastated by the loss in October of our “special needs” gibbon, Beanie. You’ll find the story of his life in the centerfold of this issue. In 1990 Beanie had developed encephalitis when living at a primate facility in Florida. This terrible disease left him blind and suffering from epilepsy, so he was sent to IPPL for special care. Beanie didn’t let his handicaps defeat him. He was a spunky, personable gibbon, adored by our staff members. Beanie could sing gibbon songs. The only problem was that sometimes he would start singing at 3 a.m. because, being blind, he didn’t know the difference between night and day! He could perform spectacular gibbon acrobatics at whirlwind speed, sometimes spinning round a stationary bar fifteen times. Beanie loved food and had strong preferences. He loved sweet potatoes, but only if they were baked and had a sprinkling of sugar! Another favorite was raisin bread. But not just any raisin bread. He preferred Arnold’s raisin bread, which is loaded with raisins. If you offered him a substitute he would throw it away. We are all going to miss Beanie greatly, but the 31 resident gibbons keep us busy. Courtney is now two and a half years old and still very much an infant.

    THE INSUFFICIENCY OF ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS David Hancocks Executive Director Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Presented American Zoo and Aquarium Association Annual General Meeting Seattle, WA, 1996 About twenty years ago, Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo produced its Long Range Plan. It was the first zoo plan ever prepared by landscape architects, rather than by architects. Also it was the first based on bioclimatic zoning. Many zoo professionals ridiculed the concept of bioclimatic zoning. Recently an architect board member of Zoos Victoria rejected it as worthless, saying it was “just all about the sun and trees and that sort of thing.” Traditionalists in the zoo world argued for retaining taxonomic grouping as the basis for zoo plans. Another novel approach introduced at Woodland Park Zoo was the creating of large-scale outdoor exhibits in which people and animals shared the same naturalistic landscape. Landscape architect Grant Jones, in preparing the Zoo’s Long Range Plan, coined the term "landscape immersion" for this approach. Unfortunately some zoo professionals thought it wasteful to dedicate space and money to landscaping, and opposed the emphasis on plants. Landscape immersion, and naturalistic exhibits that replicate specific habitats, and even bioclimatic zoning, have now become accepted, and are regarded by many zoos as standard practice. Indeed, zoo people often talk of such techniques as an ideal. This is unfortunate, because these concepts, though worthwhile, do not go far enough. The zoo profession needs to reach far beyond the present goals. In their present form zoos are not sufficient for the coming century. The so called "greening" of western zoos in recent years, and the development of what is called "habitat" exhibits have for the most part dealt only with cosmetic problems.

    South East Asia Zoo and Related Legislation The region known as Southeast Asia includes the countries of Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The South East Asian Zoo Association (SEAZA) draws together the zoos of the region and facilitates interaction between them in such areas as communication, coordination, and training. In the late 1990s SEAZA worked to develop professional standards for Southeast Asian zoos, with the goal of providing the basis for a zoo accreditation system. Standards were being developed in the areas of animal collection, transport, and display; record keeping; maintenance; propagation; and conservation. Some countries in Southeast Asia already had specific zoo legislation of their own. Brunei Brunei has a Wildlife law published in 1984 which avoids the subject of live animals in captivity entirely. It can be found in Laws of Brunei, Chapter 102. The Wild life Protection Act of Brunei is an Act to make provision for the protection of wildlife and for the establishment of wild life sanctuaries Capture and killing for flesh, trade, etc. is prohibited and export is strictly regulated. There is a list of protected animals. There is nothing in this act which could apply to a zoo or mini zoo. There are two public zoos in Brunei and private royal collections. Malaysia The 1972 law regarding wildlife protection in peninsular Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak states have separate legislation) is called the Protection of Wildlife Act. Under this act, wildlife is categorized as either totally protected or protected and listed under five schedules. Activities permitted under the act include keeping, trapping, breeding, import/export, and hunting.
