Duncan Honeybourne Full Biography 900 words "The heroic Duncan Honeybourne" (Musical Opinion) enjoys a colourful and diverse career as a pianist and in music education. Reviews have commended his "glittering performances" and “suave confidence” (International Piano), “terrific intensity and touches of panache” (International Record Review), "intellectual and physical stamina" (Musical Opinion) and “delicate chemistry of touch and arm weight” (Gramophone). Fanfare magazine (USA) remarked: “Honeybourne’s performance is simply beautiful, even in its most powerful and haunting moments”, whilst American Record Guide commented: "Honeybourne's playing is always polished and refined." His debut in 1998 as concerto soloist at Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the National Concert Hall, Dublin, was broadcast on radio and television, and he gave recital debuts in London, Dublin, Paris, and at international festivals in Belgium and Switzerland. Duncan's debut CD was described by Gramophone magazine as “not to be missed by all lovers of English music”, whilst BBC Music Magazine reported: “There are gorgeous things here. Hard to imagine better performances.” Honeybourne has toured extensively in the UK, Ireland and Europe as solo and lecture recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician, appearing at many major venues and leading festivals. His solo performances have been frequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and TV (UK), RTÉ (Ireland), Radio France Musique, Radio Suisse Romande, Austrian, Belgian, Dutch, Finnish and German Radio, SABC (South Africa), ABC (Australia) and Radio New Zealand. Duncan's engagements for regional music societies and arts centres across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland have included hundreds of solo recitals as well as many partnerships with renowned artists and ensembles. -

NEWSLETTER OF THE MIDWESTERN GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCIETY September 1990 -- Issue 27 But the night has been long, Ditto, Ditto my song, And thank goodness they're both of 'em over! It isn't so much that the night was long, but that the Summer was (or wasn't, as the case may be). This was not one of S/A Cole's better seasons: in June, her family moved to Central Illinois; in July, the computer had a head crash that took until August to fix, and in that month, she was tired and sick from all the summer excitement. But, tush, I am puling. Now that Autumn is nearly here, things are getting back to normal (such as that is). Since there was no summer Nonsense, there is all kinds of stuff in this issue, including the answers to the Big Quiz, an extended "Where Can it Be?/The G&S Shopper", reports on the Sullivan Festival and MGS Annual Outing, and an analysis of Thomas Stone's The Savoyards' Patience. Let's see what's new. First of all, we owe the Savoy-Aires an apology. Oh, Members, How Say You, S/A Cole had sincerely believed that an issue of the What is it You've Done? Nonsense would be out in time to promote their summer production of Yeomen. As we know now, Member David Michaels appeared as the "First no Nonsense came out, and the May one didn't even Yeomen" in the Savoy-Aires' recent production of mention their address. Well, we're going to start to The Yeomen of the Guard. -

- TRIBUTE - John Joubert: 1927 – 2019 by Chris Bye John Joubert leaves an auspicious musical legacy which will forever echo around the world’s churches and concert halls. Born in Cape Town, the composer’s childhood years were dominated by an enthusiasm for art. Initially, Joubert had set his sights on being a painter, though an increased interest in music led to a change in his professional ambitions in favour of the latter. Joubert was educated at the Diocesan College (widely known as ‘Bishops’) and studied with W H Bell at the South African College of Music. In 1946, a Performing Right Society Scholarship enabled Joubert to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London under Theodore Holland, Howard Ferguson and Alan Bush, and was awarded the Lionel Tertis and Royal Philharmonic Society prizes. During his studentship at the Academy, Joubert enrolled as an external student at Durham University, graduating with a BMus in 1950. 1951 saw the completion of Torches, arguably his most enduring carol; it was written for a primary school choir in Hull of which his wife was the director. Another early success was his opera on George Eliot’s Silas Marner (1960), which was intended for the golden jubilee of the then Union of South Africa; it was ultimately produced under the auspices of the University of Cape Town. The Sharpeville massacre of 21 March that same year led to the composition of the Second Symphony (1970), dedicated to the memory of those killed on that day by the police force of the Apartheid government. The Symphony, which is inspired to some extent by Shostakovich’s Eleventh, bears a passage from Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country (1948) on the score. -

Commissions continued to come his way, and amongst the works he composed at Birmingham were Symphony No 2, the opera Under Western Eyes and the oratorio The Raising of Lazarus. In the early 1980s he began to feel that the increasing demands of his two professions were becoming too onerous for him and he took early retirement from the University in 1986 in order to devote his time exclusively to composition. In 1991 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in music by Durham University and is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Since his retirement he has completed, as well as numerous smaller works, two large-scale projects: his third three-act opera Jane Eyre, and the full- length oratorio Wings of Faith, which received its first performance in March 2007 as part of the composer’s eightieth birthday celebrations. -
