Running concurrently with the Whitney Museum’s exhibition Making Knowing, which also features works by Shechet, Skirts brings together more than a dozen of the artist’s most recent sculptures, including large-scale works and a monumental outdoor piece, to be displayed on the second-floor galleries and terrace of Pace’s new flagship building at 540 West 25th street. Rich in idiosyncrasies, Shechet’s latest pieces combine disparate mediums, from ceramics to wood and metalwork, with playfully ambiguous titles that prompt endless associations. Utilizing a title that is both a noun and a verb, Skirts is a testament to the artist’s fluid and unformulaic process. Though her works appear effortless and forgiving of imperfections, they are the belabored products of an intuitive and technically fastidious approach, involving casting, painting, firing, carving, stacking, undoing and redoing with no predetermined endpoint. Her expansive approach to sculpture and materials is reminiscent of artists Shechet admires, such as Sophie Taeuber- Arp and Sonia Delaunay, whose work transcends the divisions of painting and sculpture and encompassed innovative multimedia practices, distinguishing their work from that of their male peers. Shechet’s title, Skirts, also reclaims misogynist slang. -

All at Once, a major, critically-acclaimed 20-year survey of Shechet’s work, was on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston in 2015. Sebastian Smee of The Boston Globe wrote: “It’s in the harmonies and tensions between these colors and textures, between suggestions of both order and anarchy, decay and blooming freshness, that these works cough, sputter, and sing. If they really are the great analogs to interior life that I feel them to be, it’s because Shechet knows that this life, expertly attended to, has its own folds and wrinkles, its own hollows and protuberances; that it is at once fugitive and monumental … and ultimately unknowable.” All at Once was also hailed by The New York Times as “some of the most imaginative American sculpture of the past 20 years, and Arlene Shechet some of the most radically personal.” In recent years, Shechet’s work has included historical museum installations. Porcelain, No Simple Matter: Arlene Shechet and the Arnhold Collection, on view at The Frick Collection from May Working Over Time : an artist’s talk 2016 to April 2017, is described in The New Yorker as “a balancing act of respectful and radical” with “whimsical beauty and deep smarts.” From Here on Now, Shechet’s solo museum exhibition at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., opens October 2016. -

Une action programmatique. Cette exposition s’inscrit dans une séquence de programmation en résonance avec le cinquième accrochage des œuvres de la collection du MAC/VAL qui, sous le titre «Vivement demain», explore le mythe de l’artiste visionnaire. Faisant suite à l’exposition collective « Situation(s) [48°47’34’’ N / 2°23’14’’ E] », où s’est développée une réflexion autour d’un appel à des « Êtres au monde » résistants, et précédant celle de Fiona Banner, artiste attentive à la mise en crise des formes diverses de dominations, l’exposition de Fabrice Hyber résonne particulièrement avec l’histoire de ce musée. Depuis la création du Fonds départemental d’art contemporain au début des années 1980 jusqu’à ses récents développements, le projet du musée se pense en direction de l’Autre. Du public. Les POF mettent en acte quelque chose d’une économie de la Rencontre. Une Rencontre modifie, à jamais, la cartographie du Réel. Le Monde s’en trouve irrémédiablement modifié. De cette aventure, l’œuvre, le visiteur, le musée ne sortiront pas indemnes, et c’est tant mieux. Loin d’une rétrospective qui fige l’œuvre, il s’agit de faire le point, à un instant T, de donner à voir quelque chose du travail en train de se faire, de la pensée en acte. -

Fitzgibbon has screened her work at international film festivals, museums and galleries, including New Museum, Salon94, Louis B. James Gallery, MOCA/LA Film Forum, Austrian VIENNALE, TIFF, International Film Festival Rotterdam, BERLINALE, MoMA (NYC), Palais des Beaux Arts (Brussels), Institute of Contemporary Art (London), DeAppel (Amsterdam), Subliminal Projects Gallery (Los Angeles), Anthology Film Archives, Light Industry and Exit Art (NYC). A student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Independent Study Program, Fitzgibbon studied with Owen Land, Stan Brakhage, Yvonne Rainer, Carolee Schneemann, and Jack Smith, and worked on film and sound projects for Dennis Oppenheim, Gordon Matta-Clark and Les Levine. She formed the collaborative X+Y with Robin Winters in 1976, The Offices of Fend, Fitzgibbon, Holzer, Nadin, Prince and Winters in 1979, and co- founded the New York based Collaborative Projects, Inc. (Colab) in 1977 through 1981, along with forty plus artists. Most recently her paintings have incorporated photographic images from broadcast media which depict conflict, injustice, and social unrest. These graphic images act as intellectual and compositional points of departure; ultimately occluded on the canvas, they remain as a phantom presence in the highly abstracted gestural completed works. -
