SFERISTERIO OPERA FESTIVAL ARENA SFERISTERIO - MACERATA

The little and wonderful town of Macerata, presents its annual Festival. A fairy Festival, where audience can feel like being directly on the stage with the characters. This happens thanks to the particular effect created by the special theatre architecture called “Sferisterio”. The “Sferisterio di Macerata” is actually one of the most particular theatre in the whole world. Built in the first half of XIX century, the “Sferisterio” used to host “pallone con bracciale” matches (literally ball with bracelet) , where two teams face each other bouncing the ball on a wall.

After one century of activity, the Sferisterio starts hosting big musical events. It will welcome some of the most popular artists such as the tenor Beniamino Gigli. Although it has been designed and built for “pallone con bracciale” game, the Sferisterio has potential for acoustics. Sounds and voices are strong and clear into the Sferisterio. Audience feels like the characters on stage. There is no barrier between public and stage. People feel and are close to the stage and can hear every dialog.
