This editorial is being written well beforethe IAU 100km World Challenge to be held in Winschoten, Holland on 13th September. By the time you read this, the race will probably have been run. I know you all join with me to offerbest wishes to our men's team and hope they are able to produce a result that they are happy with. Team members: Tim Sloan, Mick Francis, Ian Clarke and Paul Every. while not the strongestteam that could be put together, should do well. We wish them well. We were unable to form a women's team for the Winschoten race, having only one starter, Mary Francis. Marywill competeanyway, but is in reduced formdue to injury. Good luck Mary! Next year's 100kmAustralian Champio nships will be conducted by TraralgonHarriers on a sealed flat 10km loopjust outside Traralgon, near Glengarry. The tentative date is the 5th April, which will be conformed later. With next year's IAU 100kmWorld Challengebeing held in Japan in October, the Australian Championships will be a qualifying race for Australian team selection. A number of placegetters will be able to receive automaticselection, subject to attainmentof a better than qualifying performance. The Queensland Ultra Runners Club is hosting the IAU International1000 Miles Track Championship in Nanango between 11th and 26th March, 1998. It is a great coup forthe club to secure the firstever such championships. The event will be conducted by the Nanango 1000Miles Track Race Committee and we wish them every success fora memorable fourteendays. Yiannis Kouros has done it again. In a 24 Hour Race on the AIS trackin Canberra on the 2nd and 3rd March this year, Yiannis surpassed his previous intermediate and final marks to again record Australian and World Records. The most significant World Records, pending, are 15:29:07 for 200km and 295.03km for 24 hours. Even though Yiannis was again foiledby the weather in his attempt to be the firstperson to surpass 300kmin 24 hours, his effortsare to be heartilycongratulated by us all. When most of us would have had enough of 24 hours running, Yiannis seems to thrive on them. Congratulations Yiannis. Well done! I recentlyreported on the currentultra scene to Athletics Australia'sRoad Running and Cross-Country Commission. I also provide an ultra-updateto their Distance Running Update Newsletter. These two occurrences reflect a growing interest and position of ultrarunning in the world of athletics. Let us hopethe push to get a 100kmevent into the Commonwealth Games in Manchester is successful. Then we really would engender wide-spread public interest. Maharam, M.D., FACSM; Pedro Pujol, M.D., FACSM; Steve Van Camp, M.D.,FACSM; and Jan Thorsall, M.D. Publication: New Studies in Athletics: The IAAF Technical Quarterly. 17:1; 15-24, 2002. SUMMARY During endurance exercise about 75% of the energy produced from metabolism is in the form of heat, which cannot accumulate. The remaining 25% of energy available can be used for movement. As running pace increases, the rate of heat production increases. Also, the larger one’s body mass, the greater the heat production at a particular pace. Sweat evaporation provides the primary cooling mechanism for the body, and for this reason athletes are encouraged to drink fluids to ensure continued fluid availability for both evaporation and circulatory flow to the tissues. Elite level runners could be in danger of heat illness if they race too quickly in hot/humid conditions, and may collapse at the end of their event. Most marathon races, however, are scheduled at cooler times of the year or day, so that heat loss to the environment is adequate. Typically however, this post-race collapse is due simply to postural hypotension from decreased skeletal muscle massage of the venous return circulation to the heart upon stopping.

Most loved pair of runners you have ever had: My first pair of runners (Asics Tiger) in 1981 as they felt really comfortable compared with the Dunlop Volleys I’d been using before that. Today, it’s Brooks Racer that I like best because they are comfortable, very durable and light so they are great for training as well as racing. Favourite race: I have so many favourite races that I generally follow a yearly cycle. Currently they include the 6 Foot Track, Canberra Marathon/50km, City to Surf, Oxfam Trailwalker, Brindabella Classic and various mountain races, together with a few rogaines and orienteering events. I like them all really! Today though, my favourite of the favourites would have to be the 6 Foot Track because it seems to suit me really well as I can finish close to the leaders more so than in any other race, giving a nice feeling.   • A Huge Goal for Us Is to Open a Special Needs School
    10th BIRTHDAY On 5th December we celebrated our 10th birthday. This was a momentous time for us as an organization to look back on 10 years of growth, change, challenges and success. We excited to embrace all the challenges and adventures the next 10 years hold. Our Director, Sophia Warner had the following to say about our vision going forward: A huge goal for us is to open a special needs school. Approximately 70% of the children are not reaching the academic level that they should be. This may be a result of lack of previous early childhood development education, poverty, dysfunctional home circumstances, foetal alcohol spectrum disorders, truancy and poor school attendance, lack of parental support or low literacy levels, poor quality schooling or lack of previous academic support. We aim to provide intensive accelerated learning programmes in a dedicated centre to help the children reach their potential. We also aim to have expanded to other geographical areas within the Western Cape or elsewhere in South Africa. Our programmes are well established now. We are ready to roll out to new areas and take on many new farms'. PRODUCTION At the 10th birthday celebration children from Kaapzicht, Bellevue, Koopmanskloof, Villiera and Hartenberg were involved in a drama production called 'I am Important'. The production combined music, song, dance and dialogue which gave the children exposure to different elements of theatre and performance. The message communicated through the performance is that each person in society is significant and each person has a unique contribution to make. Every day Pebbles tries to communicate this message to all the staff members and the beneficiaries of our work.
