Latvian Song and Dance Festival

LATVIAN SONG AND DANCE FESTIVAL 2018 30.06.-08.07. For a whole week in the summer 2018 Riga will be taken over by the most grandiose festival in Latvia – the "Latvian Song and Dance Festival" gathering tens of thousands of singers and dancers from everywhere in Latvia, who will fill the city with sounds of folk music. This festival with its greatness, quality and diversity is a unique event on a world scale; therefore it has been included in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. TEXTILE ARTIST EGILS ROZENBERGS’ SOLO EXHIBITION – TRANSFIGURATION 01.07.-26.08. 10:00-17:00 (VI,VII), 10:00-18:00 (II-IV), 10:00-20:00 (V) Every era is characterized by certain symbols and signs, and Egils Rozenbergs with his woven objects seeks to demonstrate the means of expression fit for the environment of electronic industry and microchips typical of the electronic and digital era of the late 20th century and the early 21st century. EXHIBITION – LATVIA EVOLVING. A RETROSPECTION OF LATVIAN APPLIED ART OF THE PAST 100 YEARS. 01.07.-28.10. 10:00-17:00 Ceramics, amber processing, weaving and knitting, the wide use of wood, works by blacksmiths, diverse wicker works and other less common activities – covering almost all the possible manifestations, applied arts became one of the main expressions of Latvian national identity during the previous century. EXHIBITION – SONG DAY AND SONG FESTIVAL BADGES FROM LATVIA’S REGION. 19TH CENTURY TO 1940. 01.07.-30.09. 10:00-17:00 Song Day traditions in Latvia began already before the first Song Festival, but especially during the independence years from 1920 to 1940. Not only regional song festival were held in Latgale, Northern Vidzeme, Lower Kurzeme and Zemgale, but in countries and towns throughout the country. Following tradition, special pins were specially made to commemorate not only the nationwide Song Festival, but regional ones as well. EXHIBITION – ART NOUVEAU. IT’S BEGINNINGS, INFLUENCES AND ORIGINAL NATURE 01.07.-05.08. 10:00-18:00 (II-IV,VI-VII), 10:00-20:00 (V) This exhibition is a story about the brightest expressions of Art Nouveau in Europe, visualized through painting, graphics, sculpture and the decorative arts. It marks out the beginnings, the roots and the flourishing of this style in Europe, allowing one to sense the originality of Latvian Art Nouveau more clearly, as well as showing the most prominent achievements from Art Nouveau metropolises. Fashion Museum exhibition – The Golden Twenties

EXHIBITION – USED IN RIGA. SECOND HALF OF 19TH CENTURY TO 1918. 01.07.-30.12. 10:00-17:00 This exhibition is dedicated to innovations introduced in Riga from the second half of the 19th century until 1918, ones that impacted the daily lives of residents. The exhibition will feature items used in the home produced in Riga, as well as elsewhere in Europe, Russia and the United States and were sold in shops in Riga at the time. FASHION MUSEUM EXHIBITION – THE GOLDEN TWENTIES 01.07.-14.10. 11:00-19:00 The 1920s – these are the youth days of the 20th century, a magnificent time when it began to become clearer how the new century will look. This colorful era was characterized by the elegant Art Deco style – one of the most beautiful pages of the history of 20th century design. This unique exhibition at the Riga Fashion Museum will feature costumes, accessories and clothing in the Art Deco style from the 20th century – slen- der gowns with sparkling pearls, elegant shoes etc. Fashion Museum

GROUP EXHIBITION – CLONE 01.07.-12.08. 11:00-18:00 (II, IV-VII), 11:00-19:00(III) The exhibition Clone (Klons in Latvian) is explained in two aspects. On one hand, a clay klons is an old Latvian identity code, which points out to the origin of the ceramic material and its quality. On the other hand, the word clone highlights the opportunities provided by modern technologies – creating a clone for anything. In combining these two aspects, the artists will search for their ideas through a self-portrait prism. Riga Porcelain Museum

EXHIBITION – COLOUR OF GOBELINS. CONTEMPORARY GOBELINS FROM THE "MOBILIER NATIONAL" COLLECTION IN FRANCE 01.07.-30.09. 11:00-17:00 (II, IV-VII), 11:00-19:00 (III) This unique exhibition, which will be held as part of the 6th Riga International Textile and Fiber Art Triennial, where so-called "Gobelins" will be displayed based on designs by famous painters: Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, the legendary French "Gobelin" master Jean Lurcat, as well as the works of other authors. 1ST RIGA INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART 01.07.-28.10. 11:00-20:00 (VI,VII), 10:00-18:00 (III), 13:00-20:00 (IV, V) The inaugural edition of the Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA), titled Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More, runs from 2nd of June until 28th of October 2018. Curated by Katerina Gregos, the biennial takes place at various venues in Riga and Jurmala. Including works by 104 artists (a third of which are from the Baltic countries), the biennial presents a large number of new commissions, 10 outdoor sculptures and "site-specific interventions". Blossoms can be used in various ways – in flower bouquets, in compositions. By regularly removing the old blossoms, swordlilies stay beautiful for a long time. ORCHESTRA RIGA CONCERT BACH, RESPIGHI, RAVEL 15.08. 19:00 The concert will be conducted by the winner of several international competitions and one of Latvia’s prominent conductor Ainārs Rubiķis. Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s four-part opus Vetrate di Chiesa (Church Windows) was composed in 1922, and portrays the bible scenes depicted on the church windows of various churches. On the nation’s centenary, this year’s Riga City Festival will feature the creative leg- acies of many great Latvians in the context of the country’s history and culture. As Riga celebrates its 817th anniversary, one of the more special events to take place will the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Riga Latvian Society: for three whole days Vērmane Park and the Riga Society Building will turn back the pages of history, revealing to festival goers the time more than a century ago when the Riga Latvian Society was established. PLATU 25 YACHTING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2018 18.-25.08. The Platu 25 Yachting World Championship will be held in Riga this year. The championship will take place at the Daugava estuary in the Gulf of Riga, with spectators being able to view the event from the Mangaļsala Pier. Various events will also be held in the Daugava River in downtown Riga, which can be viewed from both sides of the river. Furthermore, it will also be able to view the event on the water as well. The source of this project’s inspiration has its roots in the wine making culture. As a metaphor for the fermentation process in wine, when a healthy, live element of nature – the grapes – turns into a different form – wine, with a different taste, character and price. Constructing similar thinking about the process of creating contemporary jewelry – turning various materials into a special and industrial form – jewelry. There are four main provisions in this competition: the concept, materials, the type of artistic expression and technique. MODERN ARTS FORUM – WHITE NIGHT 2018 08.09. Metaphorically speaking (in the Romantic languages), white nights mean "sleepless" nights, and this year as usual in early September, you are cordially invited to join the crowd in experiencing a sleepless night chock full of surprises. OPERA – THE ROSE OF TURAIDA 13.09. 19:00 The Rose of Turaida, an opera by Zigmars Liepiņš and with the libretto by Kaspars Dimiters, is a musically and theatrically fresh remake of the opera No Rozes un Asinīm (From Rose and Blood). It’s a story about the events of 1620, during which the protagonists continue to live out their passions – a story that moved conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš and director Ināra Slucka to portray this melodious drama as a timeless legend about Maija’s love and loyalty. ORCHESTRA RIGA’S SEASON OPENING CONCERT 27.09. 19:00 The first performance of the second version of Andris Vecumnieks’ piece Concerti- no Art-i-Shock. Along with this opus, the concert programme will include the first performance of Rihards Dubra’s Divertissement No. 4, and the Zeppelin Symphony composed in 2008 by contemporary Australian composer Thomas Doss. The Zep- pelin Symphony in four parts reveals the history of the airship created more than 100 years ago, starting from the idea of its inventor Ferdinand von Zeppelin up to the flight itself. MIKELIS DAY FAIR IN OLD TOWN RIGA 29.09. 09:00-17:00 Mikelis Day is celebrated during the autumn solstice, when the sun turns towards winter – this is the time when daytime and nighttime is the same length and the astronomical autumn sets in. This is an important time of the year for farmers, when the most important jobs have been completed before winter and it is time to celebrate the harvest. Market squares will be full of Latvian grown pumpkins, apples, pears, cranberries, cowberries and much more. The ladies of the house will be offering homemade jams, cheeses, traditional pastries and home-basked bread. Everyone will be able to enjoy and purchase fresh honey, as well as smoked meats and fish. Meanwhile, local craftsmen will also be on hand offering traditional and contemporary linens, ceramics, jewelry, wooden items and much, much more. Dome Square

AUTUMN HARVEST FESTIVAL 30.09. 10:00-16:00 Autumn Solstice, or the day of Miķelis, is associated with the completion of field works, and this harvest festival is certainly a rich feast and loud rejoicing. This is also the most popular time to celebrate marriage. The festival at the museum will be enriched with a fair offering of autumn harvest bounties and products made by craftsmen, delicious pumpkin soup and the V International Katlakalns Folklore Fes- tival in cooperation with the Katlakalns House of Culture.
