1 COLLABORATIVE ONLINE RESEARCH PROJECT Consuls of “THE DARDANELLES” and “GALLIPOLI” (Updated Version no: 4 – February 2013) Welcome to a resource being compiled about the consuls and consulates of “The Dardanelles” and “Gallipoli”. This is an ongoing project. In this fourth update, many new details have been added, especially from genealogical sources, and some questions clarified. The information shown here is not complete and may contain errors. For this reason, it may appear rather haphazard in some places. In time, a more coherent narrative will emerge. The project aims to take advantage of the Internet as a source of information and as a means of communication. There is now a vast and increasing amount of information online which allows us access to sources located in various countries. Many sources are quoted verbatim until the content can be confirmed in comparision with other sources. If you are a researcher, family member, or simply interested in some aspect of this topic, you may be able to help by providing additions, corrections, etc., however short. This will help to fill in gaps and present a fuller picture for the benefit of everybody researching these families or this locality. The Nature of British Mapping of West Africa, 1749 – 1841 Sven Daniel Outram-Leman University of Stirling PhD History Submitted 1st May 2017 Author’s declaration The work contained in this thesis is entirely my own. The views expressed are entirely my own, and not those of the University of Stirling 1 Abstract By focusing on the “nature” of mapping, this thesis falls under the category of critical cartography closely associated with the work of Brian Harley in the 1980s and early 1990s. As such the purpose of this research is to highlight the historical context of British maps, map-making and map-reading in relation to West Africa between 1749 and 1841. I argue that maps lie near the heart of Britain’s interactions with West Africa though their appearance, construction and use evolved dramatically during this period. By beginning this study with a prominent French example (Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville’s 1749 “Afrique”) I show how British map-makers adapted cartography from France for their own purposes before circumstances encouraged the development of new materials. Because of the limited opportunities to make enquiries in the region and the relatively few people involved in affecting change to the map’s content, this thesis highlights the episodes and manufactured narratives which feature in the chronology of evolving cartographies. This study concludes with the failure of the 1841 Niger Expedition, when Britain’s humanitarian agenda saw the attempted establishment of a model farm on banks of the Niger River and the negotiation of anti-slave trade treaties with nearby Africans. -

Highly detailed map of North Africa and Egypt, extending from Cairo and the Lower Nile River Valley to Tripoli, Mourzuk and the Sahara, published in London by James Rennell. The map illustrates the routes of two European travelers, whose travels would be reported and described by the African Association in 1802. The African Association, which later became part of the Royal Geographical Society, was a nongovernmental group of patrons of wealth, learning and influence. Sir Joseph Banks, the association's treasurer for several years, was closely involved from the outset. Other notable members included William Wilberforce and Josiah Wedgwood. Begnning in 1788, the Association published a regular journal. Friedrich Conrad Hornemann Friedrich Conrad Hornemann (1772-1801) was a German explorer in Africa. in 1796, he offered his services to the African Association of London as an explorer in Africa. The African Association sent him to the University of Göttingen to study Arabic and otherwise prepare for an expedition from the east into the unknown regions of North Africa. In September 1797 he arrived in Egypt, where he continued his studies. When the country was invaded by the French, Hornemann remained in the citadel at Cairo to preserve him from the fanaticism of the populace. -

Fellow-elect in English, The University of Kansas LAWRENCE, MAY, 1916 PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY PREFACE The writer's interest in Orientalism in English literature began at the University of Illinois in 1911, when Professor H. G. Paul, in a lecture on the Romantic poets, emphasized Byron's Oriental coloring and suggested that its study would make a good thesis. A little later this interest took form in a master's thesis on The Orientalism of Byron, which was accepted by the English Depart• ment of the University of Kansas in 1914. This preliminary study opened up a field which seemed boundless, and which offered very attractive appeals to the student of foreign influences on English literature. One does not need to be acquainted with Oriental languages or Oriental literature to trace with some profit the effects of Oriental interests on English verse and prose. It has been impossible to examine all the English verse from 1740 to 1840; but the chief poets have been reviewed with a good deal of care, and many of the minor ones. The Oriental drama offers a field by itself, and only a few dramas have been included in the present survey. It is hoped that all the main characteristics of Oriental diction and theme in the period have been recognized and given some attention in this paper. There has been no effort at a microscopic examina• tion, at inclusion of every possible poet, passage, or term. -

Orientalism in the Victorian Era Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Literature Orientalism in the Victorian Era Valerie Kennedy Subject: African Literatures, British and Irish Literatures, Fiction, West Asian Literatures, in cluding Middle East, 19th Century (1800-1900) Online Publication Date: Aug 2017 DOI: 10.1093/acrefore/9780190201098.013.226 Summary and Keywords Orientalism in the Victorian era has origins in three aspects of 18th-century European and British culture: first, the fascination with The Arabian Nights (translated into French by Antoine Galland in 1704), which was one of the first works to have purveyed to West ern Europe the image of the Orient as a place of wonders, wealth, mystery, intrigue, ro mance, and danger; second, the Romantic visions of the Orient as represented in the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, George Gordon, Lord Byron, and other Romantics as well as in Thomas Moore’s Lalla Rookh; and third, the domestication of opium addiction in Thomas de Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium Eater. Victorian Orientalism was all pervasive: it is prominent in fiction by William Thackeray, the Brontë sisters, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Joseph Conrad, and Rudyard Kipling, but is also to be found in works by Benjamin Disraeli, George Eliot, Oscar Wilde, and Robert Louis Stevenson, among others. In poetry Edward Fitzgerald’s Rubaiyat is a key text, but many works by Alfred Tennyson and Robert Browning also show the influence of Orientalist tropes and ideas. In theater it is one of the constant strands of much popular drama and other forms of popular entertainment like panoramas and pageants, while travel writing from Charles Kingsley to Richard Burton, James Anthony Froude, and Mary Kingsley shows a wide variety of types of Orientalist figures and concepts, as do many works of both popular and children’s literature. -

Classical Ghosts: Greco-Roman Influences on Enlightenment Travel Writings in Ottoman Egypt Miguel Chavez August 8, 2015 1 Introduction By 1900, Egypt was under the de facto control of the British Empire. Whereas diplomatic decorum still connected Egypt with the Ottoman realm, the reality was more straightforward. The dynasty of Muhammad Ali Pasha continued to claim dominion over Egypt, but effective power laid in the hands of the Consul-General of Egypt, Evelyn Baring, first earl of Cromer.1 While the ramifications of Cromer’s governorship over Egypt (1883-1907) would make for an interesting study all in itself, what is striking was Cromer’s life-long obsession for the classical past. An anecdote relayed by Ronald Storrs to a visit to Cromer’s Cairene residence markedly shows Cromer’s enthusiasm for all things classical: Lady Cromer handed me a Latin invitation which the Lord [Cromer] had received from the University of Aberdeen . and bade me answer it in the same tongue. [I] undertook to do it most cheerfully: I had no books of any kind, but furbished up a good Roman roll, which I gave to her when she came to tea. She hadn't been gone an hour when I got a note, asking me to luncheon and telling me the Lord had called it 'devilish' good. I found the old man very much pleased about it: he said he felt an infernal hypocrite signing it, and was quite sure he'd be found out, etc. Gave me a copy of his translation from the Greek Anthology, and hoped that the Varsities [sic] would retain Greek.2 While the Cairene streets bustled below in the -

An Index to the Catalogue of an Exhibition from the W. Hugh Peal Collection John Spalding Gatton On 15 October 1982 the University of Kentucky Libraries formally dedicated the W. Hugh Peal Collection of rare books and manuscripts, the majority of which its donor had recently presented to his alma mater. A seminar on the Early Romantic Poets (whose writings underpin the collection), a dinner at Spindletop Hall, and a two-month exhibition of over two hundred items from the 15,000-piece gift marked the occasion and honored Mr. Peal for his incomparable generosity. The Kentucky Review also devoted the first number of its fourth volume to a biographical and descriptive catalogue of the exhibit. -

To the memory of my brother Ali Abstract This study aims at investigating the representations of Persia in a number of canonical and non-canonical texts in English literature. The theoretical framework comes from Edward Said’s analysis of orientalism. It is argued that the case of Persia instances the heterogeneous and striated character of orientalism (‘representations’ rather than ‘representation’ in the title). It is shown that while a number of relatively similar set of motifs and topoi, mainly derived from classical tradition and contemporary travel writing, circulate in the works of the three Renaissance authors included (Spenser, Marlowe, Milton), they are differently inflected and serve different thematic and ideological purposes. It is also suggested that the somewhat nascent orientalism of these authors develops into a more fully-fledged one in Thomas Moore’s Lalla Rookh where a basically Romantic notion of Persia as an exotic land is overridden by its construction as a realm fallen to foreign domination and cultural dispossession so as to displace the poet’s radical political views. -

Yashina2 Abstract Objectives: The article provides a detailed, holistic analysis of ten translations of the lyrical works of the Irish poet Thomas Moore, created by A.A. Kursinsky and included into his poetic collection “Poluteny. Lyrical poems published in 1894 and 1895 years”. Peculiarities of the perception of this poetic collection are characterized by V.Ya. Bryusov, who noticed A.A. Kursinsky's intention to “imitate ruthlessly” to K.D. Balmont, with the adoption of both his “appearance” and “the very sense of his poetry” and proposed his own interpretations of two Thomas Moore’s poems from the list of previously translated by A.A. Kursinsky. Methods: In the methodological aspect, the article is based on the foundations of historical poetics, set forth in the fundamental works of Alexander N. Veselovsky, V.М. Zhirmunsky, the theses of M.M. Bakhtin's theory about dialogue and “stranger's word”, the works of the representatives of the Leningrad school of comparative-historical literature, created by M.P. -
Lahore: “The City of Dreadful Night”
DR ANNA SUVOROVA (Moscow) If I had read Lahaur Ka Ek Vaqi‘a by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi before this text was written I would have certainly included this excellent and mysterious short story in my book ―Lahore: Topophilia of Space and Place‖ as the cultural and phenomenological image of Lahore re-created here is one of the best in the Urdu fiction. Anyway better late than never. Now I have a privilege to dedicate this chapter of the book to Shamsur Rahman Faruqi Sahib and congratulate him with his birthday and the highest civil award of Pakistan conferred on him. Lahore: “The City of Dreadful Night” As it is the case with most ancient cities in the world, the historical and geographic image of Lahore has been taken up by literature and the fine arts, which have turned it into an artistic image. The artistic image of a city greatly augments the general capacity of topophilia to reveal the emotional connection between man and the surrounding environment and efface the phenomenological barriers between the subject and the object. Reflection and dream, allusions and associations, imagination and invention that are employed by creative thought considerably transform and expand the chorological notions of a city. I have already mentioned that Lahore made its way into Western literature as far back as the 17th century in John Milton's work. In the national literary tradition (first in Urdu and then in Punjabi), the artistic image of Lahore took shape only in the late 19th century. Naturally, these ―inner‖ and ―outer‖ images of the city differ greatly.
