Fusing the best of American craftsmanship with international influences that accented homes of the era, WILLIAMSBURG offers a fresh take on 18th-century design, reimagining classic elements for today’s lifestyles. GARDEN IMAGES Highlighted by a magnificent watercolor painted by Georg Ehret in 1737, this botanical design captures the natural ambience of gardens in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area. The large magnolia blossoms, flowering dogwood, and occasional butterfly are shown in multiple colors on a lightly textured field which mimics fine linen or, in one instance, cloth of gold. Six variations include cream ground with green, blue, and beige, brown ground with deep pinks and blue-greens, a charcoal ground with purples and ochres. There is also a distinctive metallic gold ground enhanced by plum accents. Dickinson Trellis or Amelia Stripe would make a handsome partner. TAUNTON TEXTURE During the 18th- century, Taunton, England, was a center for the manufacture of woolen broadcloth. This wall paper, named for that city, bears a similarity. The textured background looks like woven cloth, while vertical and horizontal faux slubs mimic the appearance and feel of earlier fabrics made from nubby hand-spun yarns. This pattern, in five palettes including beige with taupe and white, or light and medium grey with cream, offers a subtle complement to many other designs in the WILLIAMSBURG collection. This article was conducted in NinhThuan Province, Vietnam in 2017. The subject of the study were the figures of the Champa Muslim community (Bani and Cham Islam), then the worshipers of the two groups above. The object of this research was Hindu effect on Bani Islam.The population in this research were the Bani religious figures and Cham Islam/Sunni whose numbers could not be identified completely because they were spread in various regions. The analysis that the author used in this study was a Qualitative Descriptive analysis. This article concludes thatin Vietnam there are two Islamic groups namely Cham Islam and Early Cham (Cham Bani). The way to worship the Cham Bani group was influenced by Hinduism, which has become a tradition of Vietnamese society before the arrival of Islam. This happened due to the unfinished Islamization process.Cham Bani's way of worship is still going on nowadays, even though there have been purification efforts from various parties to improve the way they worship. -

The Mandala Culture of Anarchy: The Pre-Colonial Southeast Asian International Society Pandu Utama Manggala Australian National University, Australia Abstract Throughout the years, study on pre-colonial Southeast Asian international relations has not garnered major attention because it had long been seen as an integral part of the China- centred tribute system. There is a need to provide greater understanding of the uniqueness of the international system as different regions have different ontologies to comprehend its dynamics and structures. This paper contributes to the pre-colonial Southeast Asian literature by examining the interplay that had existed between pre-colonial Southeast Asian empires and the hierarchical East Asian international society, in particular during the 13th- 16th Century. The paper argues that Southeast Asian international relations in pre-colonial time were characterized by complex political structures with the influence of Mandala values. In that structural context, the Majapahit Empire, one of the biggest empires at that time had its own constitutional structures of an international society, albeit still sought close relations with China. Miceli** Abstract: Throughout history, religious and political authorities have had a mysterious attraction to each other. Rulers have established state religions and adopted laws with religious origins, sometimes even claiming to have divine powers. We propose a political economy approach to theocracy, centered on the legitimizing relationship between religious and political authorities. Making standard assumptions about the motivations of these authorities, we identify the factors favoring the emergence of theocracy, such as the organization of the religion market, monotheism vs. polytheism, and strength of the ruler. We use two sets of data to test the implications of the model. We first use a unique data set that includes information on over three hundred polities that have been observed throughout history. We also use recently available cross-country data on the relationship between religious and political authorities to examine these issues in current societies. The results provide strong empirical support for our arguments about why in some states religious and political authorities have maintained independence, while in others they have integrated into a single entity. Rajantheran - Amalan Kultus Devaraja Di Asia Tenggara AMALAN KULTUS DEVARAJA DI ASIA TENGGARA M.Rajantheran PENDAHULUAN Hubungan perdagangan antarabangsa India dengan Empayar Rom (Roman Empire)t dan Asia Tenggara terjalin sekurang-kurangnya sejak abad ke-3sm.2 Ini dapat dibuktikan dengan pelbagai bukti seperti bukti kesusasteraan India, karya- karya sejarah dan geografi Barat, catatan penggembara-penggembara Cina, rekod- rekod pedagang Arab dan pelbagai penemuan arkeologi di India dan Asia Tenggara.3 Penemuan pelbagai inskripsi di wilayah Asia Tenggara yang bertarikh abad ke-4 dan ke-5 masihi yang kebanyakannya ditulis dalam Bahasa Sanskrit,a menunjukkan bahawa hubungan perdagangan antarabangsa telah merintis jalan untuk beberapa unsurperadaban India tersebar di kalangan masyarakat di Asia Tenggara. Ini termasuklah kultus devaraja yang menjadi pokok persoalan dalam tulisan ini.s Tujuan utama artikel ini ialah untuk memberikan satu gambaran yang komprehensif tentang amalan kultus devaraja di kalangan pemerintah-pemerintah awal di wilayah Asia Tenggara. Namun demekian sebelum amalan kultus devaraja di Asia Tenggara dibincang ada baiknya jika kita meneliti secara ringkas akan erti perkataan devaraja dan konsep asas devaraja yang boleh dicari dari sumber- sumber India. PENGERTIAN ISTILAII DEVARAJA Istilah devaraja adalah terbentuk daripada dua patah perkataan iaitu ' dewa' dan 'raja'. oleh itu istilah tersebut dapat diertikan sebagai 'raja kepada dewa-dewa'. Dalam tradisi India Dewa Indra selalunya dikaitkan dengan gelarandevaraja.Dewa ini juga dikatakan sebagai pemerintah bagi bandar kedewaan Amaravati yang dipercayai terletak di puncak Gunung Mahameru.6 Jean Filliozat, salah seorang sarjana Peradaban India, menerangkan bahawa Dewa Indra dikenali sebagai devaraja,tetapi kultus devaraja tidak mungkin merujuk kepada Dewa Indra sebaliknya kultus tersebut lebih tepat dikaitkan dengan Dewa siva. -

A WALK THROUGH THE GALLERY MARGARET PLASS The new African Gallery has been designed to exhibit, simply and honestly, a selection of sculptures from our permanent collections. Proudly we present them as works of art; where possible they are arranged in tribal groups for convenience and comparative study. They are labeled briefly and clearly. Here are the materials from which our visitors may form a just view of the special characteristics and merits of Negro art. For more than half a century our Museum has been enriched by acces- sions of African sculpture, mainly by purchase and partly by gifts, to the end that our permanent collections are the largest and most varied in style in America. The following descriptive notes are not to be construed as an attempt at a catalogue of the exhibition; the serious student may have access to fully documented formal catalogues should he apply to the Museum staff. In Dr. Coon's introduction he has given us the anthropological and ethno- grapbical background of the people who produced this art, working within the framework of their tribal traditions. Here in this book, with their photographs, are small synopses of what we know of these sculptures, and what we guess. We all have conscious, and sometimes unconscious, difficulty in understanding such works of art; the philosophical barrier that lies in the way of full appreciation is almost too difficult to hurdle. Many writers have tried to explain the magico-religious significance, the strength and directness of African art; few have succeeded. Perhaps these notes are mere hints and suggestions, but we hope that they may sometimes be stimulating as well as factual.
