Introduction the Linguistic Turn of the Sixties Seemed to Herald a New Focus on Language in Both the Humanities and Social Scien Introduction The linguistic turn of the sixties seemed to herald a new focus on language in both the humanities and social sciences that might break through the disciplin­ ary boundaries separating philosophy, linguistics, psychology, anthropology, and literary criticism. The triumvirate of Piaget, Chomsky, and Levi-Strauss created a tantalizing image in which structuralist conceptions of culture and psychology would combine with generative accounts of linguistic structure to create an interlinked model ofthe "deep structures" ofhuman consciousness. The heady days of that initial enthusiasm seem to have passed. Analytic philosophy quickly moved through generative semantics and speech act theory, and many present-day linguists forgo both deep structures and even transfor­ mations. Piaget has now become ofhistorical interest for cognitive psychology, and poststructuralist approaches in literary theory, unlike structuralism in the sixties, have made few inroads into anthropology and have found a generally hostile reception among analytic philosophers. Part ofthis state ofaffairs can be attributed to a divergence in the interests of literary critics, philosophers, and linguists. In the early days of structuralist linguistics, there was a constant interplay among linguists, philosophers, and literary critics. Saussure's students, such as Charles Bally, wrote about literary issues, such as narrative form and free indirect style, as well as formal linguistic problems. After his move to the United States, Roman lakobson transferred his philosophical allegiances from Husserl and phenomenology to semiotics and the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, all the while maintaining his interest in poetics. The Russian psychologist L. S. Vygotsky drew on Russian formalism, Marx, and Sapir to fashion a developmental semiotics that antici­ pated much ofPiaget's work. Some ofthese cross-disciplinary influences come into play in Derrida's early writings; these include not only commentaries on Husserl, Rousseau, and Saussure but also criticisms of the post-Saussurean Indo-European linguist Emile Benveniste on the linguistic interpretation of Downloaded from http://read.dukeupress.edu/books/book/chapter-pdf/604760/9780822382461-001.pdf by guest on 27 September 2021 2 Talking Heads Aristotle's categories and their relation to the analysis ofbeing. With the profes­ sionalization ofeach ofthese disciplines, cross-disciplinary links have become increasingly attenuated. Jakobson's dream of a philosophically and linguis­ tically sophisticated semiotics providing a framework for the analysis ofall sign phenomena seems increasingly impractical in an era divided between technical analyses oflogical form and the hermeneutics ofdesire and difference. One area where literary and philosophical methods differ most sharply is in their approaches to language and subjectivity. In contrast to the phenomenolog­ ically grounded inquiries into narrative and textual form in continental philoso­ phy (from Bergson's duree and its connections to stream of consciousness to Ricoeur and Gadamer's hermeneutics ofculture), much ofthe analytic philoso­ phy of language has focused on the logical analysis of epistemic and modal contexts and their relations to speech acts. The increasingly technical nature of these discussions has made it difficult to see what, ifany, relevance they have to problems of meaning and subjectivity in literary studies. Solving the problem of "quantifying into opaque contexts" and making distinctions between inten­ sion and extension seem to have little bearing on or usefulness for the analysis ofnarrated subjectivities or multivoicedness. Poststructuralist works on subjec­ tivity, for their part, except for the debates around Austin's speech act theory, have generally ignored the recent philosophical and linguistic work on inter­ pretation and reference theory. Although Richard Rorty has interpreted some of Donald Davidson's later work as compatible with Derrida's, deconstructionist readings of philosophy have generally avoided analytic texts. Despite their interest in Saussure and Derrida's encounters with Benveniste, poststructural­ ists have shown little interest in either contemporary formal linguistics or post­ Saussurean linguistic theory as developed by the Prague School and others. A large factor in this bifurcation is the difference in the theories of language that have been taken as fundamental by analytic philosophy and literary crit­ icism. In the analytic philosophy oflanguage, the crucial figure is the developer of modem quantification theory and mathematical logic, Gottlob Frege. For structuralist and poststructuralist literary studies, the key figure has been the Indo-European linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. Both share certain Kantian assumptions and break with previous theories of language that equate the meaning ofa word with what it picks out or refers to. Instead, they see referen­ tial uses of language as depending on a system of concepts whose internal structuring has only an indirect relation to external reality. For Saussure, concepts are"signifieds," and their conceptual values are determined by their places in a system ofdifferential oppositions. Frege's influence extends from Wittgenstein and Russell to modem speech act theory. The German thinker's discovery of quantification theory cleared up a host of unresolved problems in logic and has had a profound influence on all ofmodem epistemology and reference theory. The British philosopher Michael Dummett, in surveying the origins of the modern analytic philosophy of lan­ guage, traces its "linguistic turn" to Frege's Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik, a text that 1. Austin, the founder of "ordinary language philosophy," would later use Frege's distinction between sense and reference as a crucial component ofhis typology ofspeech acts. With John Searle's spirited defense ofAustin against Derrida's "misinterpretations" and Habermas's use of speech act theory to ground his universal pragmatics, the Fregean legacy continues to haunt contemporary debates about language and interpretation. The sense-reference distinction has also played an important role in the analysis of subjectivity, particularly in the logical analysis ofepiste­ mic and modal contexts, but these types of analysis have had little influence on poststructuralist approaches to subjectivity. Although these formal distinctions seem at first to be of interest only to logicians, Frege's work changed the directions of both continental and Anglo­ American analytic philosophy. Frege's critique of Husserl's Philosophy of Arithmetic may have led to that thinker's abandonment of psychologism and his shift to phenomenology. Husserl's Logical Investigations was the philo­ sophical inspiration for Jakobson'searly work and also the target of Derrida's critiques of logocentrism and presence. Derrida's deconstruction of Husserl's sign theory is one of his first sustained uses of his ideas of "differance" and "supplement," which will also play key roles in his later analysis of Austin. If Frege's work has been the inspiration for much of the analytic philosophy of language, Saussure's has been its counterpart for several generations of structuralist and poststructuralist scholarship. Saussure revolutionized the way in which people thought about the relationship between linguistic categories and extralinguistic reality. Previously, philologists had traced the shifting rela­ tions between words and their denotations - for example, what class ofobjects would a noun such as "cow" pick out. There was no simple route from extralinguistic reality to concepts. Although Saussure never applied his distinctions to a systematic analysis of any language, he inspired several generations of linguistic research. Inter­ estingly' the first applications were to phonology, not semantics. Saussure was among the group of linguists who developed the idea that phonemes were the intersections of a system of phonological differences rather than merely amal­ gams of acoustic properties. The linguistic system correlated these phonologi­ cal differences with semantic differences. In the 1930s, N. S. Trubetzkoy, one of the founders of the Prague School of linguistics, and Leonard Bloomfield, the American linguist, applied Saussure's insights to the analysis ofsound systems. Drawing on his knowledge of over two hundred phonological systems, Tru­ betzkoy refined Saussure's insights by showing how different types of pho­ nological oppositions systematically interacted. His colleague Roman Jakob­ son would reduce these types to one basic category, that of binary opposition; binary oppositions playa key role in Jakobson's development

    Establishing the ‘Truth’ of the Matter: Confessional Reflexivity as Introspection and Avowal JOSEPH WEBSTER University of Edinburgh The conceptualisation of reflexivity commonly found in social anthropology deploys the term as if it were both a ‘virtuous’ mechanism of self‐reflection and an ethical technique of truth telling, with reflexivity frequently deployed as an moral practice of introspection and avowal. Further, because reflexivity is used as a methodology for constructing the authority of ethnographic accounts, reflexivity in anthropology has come to closely resemble Foucault’s descriptions of confession. By discussing Lynch’s (2000) critical analysis of reflexivity as an ‘academic virtue’, I consider his argument through the lens of my own concept of ‘confessional reflexivity’. While supporting Lynch’s diagnosis of the ‘problem of reflexivity’, I attempt to critique his ethnomethodological cure as essentialist, I conclude that a way forward might be found by blending Foucault’s (1976, 1993) theory of confession with Bourdieu’s (1992) theory of ‘epistemic reflexivity’. The ubiquity of reflexivity and its many forms For as long as thirty years, reflexivity has occupied a ‘place of honour’ at the table of most social science researchers and research institutions. Reflexivity has become enshrined as a foundational, or, perhaps better, essential, concept which is relied upon as a kind of talisman whose power can be invoked to shore up the ‘truthiness’ of the claims those researchers and their institutions are in the business of making. No discipline, it seems, is more guilty of this ‘evoking’ than social anthropology (Lucy 2000, Sangren 2007, Salzaman 2002). McDougall Originally published in French in the year 2000, the English version of Sandra Laugier’s short book of 10 Chapters plus an Introduction and Conclusion, has a 7 page Preface, 9 pages of Notes, a brief Bibliography and 121 pages of actual text. The reading of Wittgenstein and Austin that she provides is distinctly Cavellian in character. Indeed, Stanley Cavell in a dust-cover quote, remarks that her work is already influential in France and Italy, exciting as it does a new interest in ‘language conceived not only as a cognitive capacity but also as used, and meant, as part of our form of life’. Cavell goes on to say that this new translation is not merely welcome but indispensable, and has at least the capacity to alter prevailing views about the philosophy of language, so affecting what we have come to think of as the ‘analytic-continental divide’. Toril Moi of Duke Uni., in another dust-cover quote, states that Laugier’s reading of Wittgenstein-Austin-Cavell shows how their claim that ‘to speak about language is to speak about the world is an antimetaphysical revolution in philosophy that tranforms our understanding of epistemology and ethics.’ She concludes with the thought that anyone who wishes to understand what ‘ordinary language philosophy’ means today should read this book. This is a large claim to make, and anyone who is inclined to read Wittgenstein and Austin strictly in their own terms, and with their own avowed intentions - where discernible - steadily in view, is almost bound to conclude that it is simply not true.

  • The Pragmatic Turn in Philosophy
    Introduction n recent years the classical authors of Anglo-Saxon pragmatism have gar- Inered a renewed importance in international philosophical circles. In the aftermath of the linguistic turn, philosophers such as Charles S. Peirce, William James, George H. Mead, Ferdinand C. S. Schiller, and John Dewey are being reread alongside, for example, recent postmodern and deconstructivist thought as alternatives to a traditional orientation toward the concerns of a represen- tationalist epistemology. In the context of contemporary continental thought, the work of Jacques Derrida, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Gilles Deleuze comprises just a few examples of a culturewide assault on a metaphysical worldview premised on what Michel Foucault called the empirico-transcendental doublet, and presents a wealth of potential exchange with the pragmatist critique of representationalism. In both cases, aspects of pragmatist thought are being used to add flexibility to the conceptual tools of modern philoso- phy, in order to promote a style of philosophizing more apt to dealing with the problems of everyday life. The hope for a pragmatic “renewing of phi- losophy” (Putnam) evidenced in these trends has led to an analytic reexami- nation of some of the fundamental positions in modern continental thought as well, and to a recognition of previously unacknowledged or underappreciated pragmatic elements in thinkers like Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. Within the current analytic discussions, a wide spectrum of differing and at times completely heterogeneous forms of neopragmatism can be distinguished, which for heuristic purposes can be grouped into two general categories according to the type of discursive strategy employed. The first of these consists in a conscious inflation of the concept of pragmatism in order to establish it as widely as possible within the disciplinary discourse of philosophy.

    AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST Linguistic Anthropology Linguistic Anthropology in 2013: Super-New-Big Angela Reyes ABSTRACT In this essay, I discuss how linguistic anthropological scholarship in 2013 has been increasingly con- fronted by the concepts of “superdiversity,” “new media,” and “big data.” As the “super-new-big” purports to identify a contemporary moment in which we are witnessing unprecedented change, I interrogate the degree to which these concepts rely on assumptions about “reality” as natural state versus ideological production. I consider how the super-new-big invites us to scrutinize various reconceptualizations of diversity (is it super?), media (is it new?), and data (is it big?), leaving us to inevitably contemplate each concept’s implicitly invoked opposite: “regular diversity,” “old media,” and “small data.” In the section on “diversity,” I explore linguistic anthropological scholarship that examines how notions of difference continue to be entangled in projects of the nation-state, the market economy, and social inequality. In the sections on “media” and “data,” I consider how questions about what constitutes lin- guistic anthropological data and methodology are being raised and addressed by research that analyzes new and old technologies, ethnographic material, semiotic forms, scale, and ontology. I conclude by questioning the extent to which it is the super-new-big itself or the contemplation about the super-new-big that produces perceived change in the world. Research articles DOI: 10.17951/et.2016.28.7 Jerzy B a r t m i ń s k i (UMCS, Lublin, Poland) Ethnolinguistics in the Year 2016∗ This article is the voice of Etnolingwistyka’s Editor-in-Chief on the current tasks of ethnolinguistics as a scholarly subdiscipline, as well as those of the journal. According to the author, of the two foundations of Slavic ethnolin- guistics mentioned by Nikita Tolstoy (i.e., its pan-Slavic character and the unity of language and culture) it is mainly the latter that has preserved its topicality: language is the source of knowledge about people and human com- munities, as well as the basis for building one’s identity (individual, national, regional, professional). The agenda of cultural linguistics has been followed by the contributors to the present journal and its editorial team with a focus on various genres of folklore, the problems of the linguistic worldview, and in recent issues with studies on the semantics of selected cultural concepts (FAMILY, DEMOCRACY, EQUALITY, OTVETSTVENNOST’, etc.). An ethnolinguistics that thus seeks “culture in language” (i.e. in the semantic layer of linguistic forms) is close – especially in its cognitivist variant – to Western cultural or anthropological linguistics. When Slavic ethnolinguistics focuses on the semantics of value terms, it stands a good chance of engaging in a dialogue with Western anthropological linguistics and contribute original insights to the common body of research on values. A specific proposal in this direction is the international project EUROJOS. Grant Campbell — University of Western Ontario Derrida, Logocentrism, and the Concept of Warrant on the Semantic Web Abstract The highly-structured data standards of the Semantic Web contain a promising venue for the migration of library subject access standards onto the World Wide Web. The new functionalities of the Web, however, along with the anticipated capabilities of intelligent Web agents, suggest that information on the Semantic Web will have much more fl exibility, diversity and mutability. We need, therefore, a method for recognizing and assessing the principles whereby Semantic Web information can combine together in productive and useful ways. This paper will argue that the concept of warrant in traditional library science, can provide a useful means of translating li- brary knowledge structures into Web-based knowledge structures. Using Derrida’s concept of logocentrism, this paper suggests that what while “warrant” in library science traditionally alludes to the principles by which con- cepts are admitted into the design of a classifi cation or access system, “warrant” on the Semantic Web alludes to the principles by which Web resources can be admitted into a network of information uses. Furthermore, library information practice suggests a far more complex network of warrant concepts that provide a subtlety and rich- ness to knowledge organization that the Semantic Web has not yet attained. Introduction The concept of warrant in traditional library science has been a cornerstone of our under- standing of, and our training in, the major tools of subject access, including the Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classifi cation, and the Dewey Decimal Classifi cation.
