Core Training For Better Health By Sallee Slagle, Director, Dance Dimensions

We have all heard the latest fitness buzz word “Core Conditioning” or “Training” CENTER OF THOUGHT and its various forms from Yoga to Pilates, now hot trends in the fitness world. But what Professional Hypnotherapy • Nahant, MA is meant by the term? Generally “core” is defined as including the muscles of your body’s torso. This includes the muscle the large and small muscles around the upper Call for a Free Consultation: torso and shoulder area, abdominal and spine, as well as your pelvis. All those muscles 781-593-4222 help you function every day. They are divided into two sections, the inner core and the outer core. www.CenterOfThought.com The outer core is the larger muscle group with which we are probably most familiar. These are often the muscles upon which we rely. • Stop Smoking • Lose Weight • and much more • The inner core is usually what is refered to by “Core Conditioning,” as this is the true core and foundation of the torso and its stability in movement, action and weight bearing. These muscles are more internal, often smaller and less easily, actively engaged with feeling, during training. It includes the anterior pelvic floor (the inside lower part of the pelvic region), transversus abdominus, which is the deepest of the abdominals, the multifidus, which is a series of smaller muscles that run the length of the spine, also including the sacrum, the thoracic diaphragm in the rib cage and the deep psoas hip flexors and rotators longisimus and iliocostalis. Okay, if that sounds like a lot of Greek (or Latin) to you, don’t worry, you’re not alone. The main thing you need to realize is that these muscles are deeper in the torso and most often smaller, so they are harder to isolate and control. The larger muscles of the outer core, often compensate for a lack of strength, or weakness, of the inner core. 2008 Capt Jennifer J. Harris Memorial Scholarship Awarded to Carissa Roche of Swampscott High School

On May 20th, at the Nahant Country Club, the 2008 Captain Jennifer J. Harris Memorial Scholarship, Swampscott/Nahant Citizen, was awarded to Carissa Roche of Swampscott High School. This $1,000 scholarship, awarded by Captain Harris’s family, is given to the applicant that has demonstrated good citizenship, commitment to serving others and academic excellence. Roche is shown here with Captain Harris’s aunt and uncle, Linda and Tony Macone. Carissa Roche participated in a variety of community service activities. She also played varsity softball and was the high school team’s starting pitcher. In both her volunteer work and as a member of a softball team, she displayed leadership qualities. Roche plans to attend Suffolk Univer- sity in the fall in preparation for a career in Law. Captain Jennifer J. Harris was the first female helicop- ter pilot assigned to the famed Marine Corps Purple Foxes squadron, served three tours of duty in Iraq and was killed in action on February 7, 2007. Service to others was the core value guiding Captain Harris. Her commitment to service was most evident when performing her military duties as a Casualty Evacuation pilot, flying in and out of combat areas for the emergency evacuation of injured soldiers and Iraqi citizens, saving a countless number of lives. Harris graduated from Swampscott High School in 1996 and from the United States Naval Academy in 2000. Upon graduation from the Naval Academy, Captain Harris was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, graduated from The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, and earned her Wings of Gold on September 13, 2002. She was then assigned to the Marine Medium Helicopter Training Squadron 164 in Camp Pendleton, CA where she learned to fly the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter. Upon completing her training, Captain Harris was assigned to the Purple Foxes of HMM-364 and immediately deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom. HMM-364 is a legendary squadron known since the Vietnam War for repeatedly answering the call of duty flying in and out of combat areas where no other helicopter squadron would go because of the danger. During her time in the HMM-364, she attended The Weapons and Tactics Instructor’s Course (WTI), the Marine equivalent to Top Gun training. The Captain Jennifer J. Harris Memorial Scholarship is an annual award presented by her family through an Educational Trust established in her memory.

News From the Johnson School By Diane Mulcahy, Johnson School Principal

The school year is quickly coming to a close. The students are enjoying the end-of-the-year activities and surviving the heat. Field Day was held Wednesday, June 11th. Due to the heat, we gambled and postponed the event, using the Rain Date. The gamble paid off and Wednesday was a beauti- ful day. Sue Rosa and her team of wonderful, dedicated parent volunteers, planned a grand day for students and teachers. The sixth-grades particularly enjoyed the traditional water balloon fight, with the fifth-graders, also following tradition and picking up the field. We’re grateful for the community support for Field Day. The Tides Restaurant supplied the food for lunch, the Knight of Columbus donated water and juice and the DPW supported us with the logistics of the day. Thank you for the continuing support to our school. On Wednesday, May 26th, the sixth-graders marched in the Town’s Memorial Day parade. Melissa Gavin, the winner of the Gettysburg Address competition, did a wonderful job in reciting the Gettysburg Address, at Greenlawn Cemetery. We were proud of the commitment the students have to carrying on the tradition. The sixth-grade performance of The Sound Of Music, on Friday evening, June 6th, was a huge success. The sixth-graders, supported by the fifth-grade chorus, presented an adaptation of this popular musical. Every sixth-grader performed in this wonderful production. The Johnson School students were in beautiful voice that evening and the capacity audience agreed. Under the direction of Mrs. Cheri Spencer, Mrs. Meredith Tibbo and Mrs. Diane Dunion, the students performed superbly and the audience was truly entertained. The Johnson School has been awarded one of the Hardscrabble Grants, given by the Essex County Education Foundation. The grant will be used to integrate Marine Science, across the curriculum. Funds will also be allocated to the Library, to purchase nonfiction science books, to support students’ research. Science equipment and professional development will be paid out of grant funds. The grant will greatly enhance the science curriculum, across all grade levels, next year. The last meeting of the Johnson School PTO was held on Monday evening, June 3rd. The election of officers was held. Ms. Sherri April and Mrs. Patty Toomajian were reelected as co-presidents, Kelly Frary was elected treasurer and Mrs. Cora Long was elected secretary. School Council elections were held as well. Mr. David Hunt was elected as the new parent representative, replacing Mickey Long, who is now serving on the School Committee. The PTO has appropriated funds to replace the old curtain in the cafetorium. The new curtains will be a royal blue and will, hopefully, be installed in September for the new school year. Thank you to the PTO. This will be a big improvement for the school.

Stellwagen Bank Controversy by Polly Bradley

Safer Waters in Massachusetts (Nahant SWIM) members attended a hearing, June 9th, for Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary’s draft management plan. SWIM’s testimony, which drew applause from the audience, stressed the need for all to work together to achieve our mutual goals: sustainable fisheries, a vibrant fishing community and protection of endangered species. A diverse group of perhaps five divers, fifteen fishermen and five environ- mental activists, testified, with widely varied perspectives, on what the Stellwagen Bank Management Plan should include. Divers were concerned about access to shipwrecks; fishermen were concerned that areas they had fished for generations, might be closed down; environmentalists were concerned that the plan did not go far enough to protect dwindling fish stocks and endangered whales. Below are excerpts from SWIM’s testimony: “As I see it, the major problem facing the people who care about Stellwagen Bank is: How can we protect the ecosystem on which the fisheries depend and at the same time, keep the New England fisheries alive right now? “This is not a dilemma unique to Stellwagen Bank. People face it all over the world, in the oceans and also on land, where setting aside a sanctuary to protect wildlife, often conflicts with the needs of people who live nearby, people who are often are desperately poor. “But we don’t have to solve this problem all over the world. We need to solve it here and now, on Stellwagen Bank. SWIM sees a polarization which serves no one well. I ask that all work together, fishermen, environmentalists, scientists and government officials, to protect ecosystem diversity and endangered species.” Written comments on the Stellwagen Bank management plan will be accepted until August 4th. For info on the plan and how to submit testimony, go to http:// stellwagen.noaa.gov. Six Nahant Guys sailed from Tudor Wharf to St. George Harbor, in Bermuda, earlier this month (June). It took us five days. The boat is named Tioga and is owned by Philip Kersten. In the photo, from left, are Josh Antrim, Tom Gutermuth, John Fulghum, Pete Barba, Philip Kersten and David Liscio. We also used a new device called “SPOT,” that allowed students at the Johnson School, to track our progress, as we clicked off the 770 nautical miles. John Leong, owner of SmartComs in Lynn, provided the SPOT device and a satphone, at no cost. All the guys on board are Nahant residents, fathers, and bluewater rookies. The women at the Customs Dock in Bermuda, got a kick out of the HOOMPA sticker and we did our best to explain its origins. — David Liscio, Nahant Casey Light, of Basalt, , visits great- grandparents Paul and Beverly Belliveau.
