Now the Red Sox were finally close to achieving it. They had beaten the Colorado Rockies in three straight World Series games. One more win and the title was theirs. Third baseman Mike Lowell had helped Boston win games all season. Now, in the year’s most important game, he was ready to do it again. He learned to play baseball from his father, Carl, who had once been a pitcher for the Puerto Rican national baseball team. As a child, Mike’s favorite day was Wednesday. On that day, his dad, a dentist, would take off from work. He’d bring Mike and his brother, Carlos, to the ball field. There they would practice batting for hours. As every fan knows, baseball is much more than a game. The anec- dote’s lesson is clear: that the globalization of sport is equally about the appeal of sport and its imbrication with world capitalism. The Taliban’s decision to affiliate with the ICC illustrates the complex and contradictory links among sport, politics, and global capitalism in a country that is on the economic and political periphery. We can discern similar intricacies and tensions at one of the epicenters of global capitalism, the USA. It is highly para- doxical that while US sport has been used as a quintessential signifier of laissez- faire values, both inside and outside the country, it is heavily protected, operating in an economically uncompetitive, welfarist environment. We investigate this important but understudied contradiction of protectionism via the global traffic in both workers and audiences associated with US professional sport. This echoes the approach we have recently used to analyze the uneven but interconnected processes that characterize the present moment in sport, via a New International Division of Cultural Labor (NICL) that governs globalization, television, and commodification (Miller et al., 2001a). The most significant development since the publication of that work has been the bust following the boom in TV sports, notably in the US, Germany, and Britain.
