The use of resistant plants may be an effective strategy for the control of this pest. In a preliminary assay, we found that dwarf-cashew clones show different levels of resistance to CW. Here, we hypothesized that such resistance is associated with morphological characteristics of cashew leaves and their content of phenolic compounds. RESULTS: We determined (i) the attractiveness and suitability for oviposition of five dwarf-cashew clones towards CW, (ii) the leaf morphology and chemistry of those clones, and (iii) the relationship between leaf characteristics and resistance to CW. In greenhouse multiple-choice assays, PRO143/7 and CCP76 showed, respectively, the lowest and highest counts of both CW adults and eggs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that PRO143/7 and EMBRAPA51 have, respectively, the highest and lowest numbers of leaf glandular trichomes. We found a negative correlation between number of trichomes in the abaxial surface of cashew leaves and CW oviposition. In addition, confocal microscopy analysis and histochemical tests with ferrous sulfate indicated a higher accumulation of phenolic compounds in the resistant clone PRO143/7 relative to the other clones. -

The Beetle Fauna of Dominica, Lesser Antilles (Insecta: Coleoptera): Diversity and Distribution

Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. PECK Department of Biology, Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario, K1S 5B6, Canada Since my earlier reports on the Leiodidae of Jamaica and Puerto Rico (Peck, 1970, 1972), I have had the opportunity to spend an additional 13 weeks in field work on these islands. In Jamaica this was from mid-December to mid-January, 1972-1973, and from late July to early September, 1974. In Puerto Rico it was from early to late May, 1973, and a week in June, 1974. This has resulted in new data on the leiodids of these islands, which are presented here. Ad- ditional data and information on forest habitat sites may be found in Peck and Kukalova-Peck (1975), and on cave sites in Peck (1974, 1975). Methods and materials are similar to those utilized for my earlier papers. Collections were primarily made in forests with pitfall traps baited with carrion and human dung (Newton and Peck, 1975); by Berlese-Tullgren funnel extraction of arthropods from sifted forest litter, and from bat guano accumulations in caves. In this work, 259 kg (770 liters) of sifted forest litter were processed for Jamaica and 93 kg (171 liters) for Puerto Rico, in addition to many other extractions from samples of bat guano. Most of the arthropod residues from these collections are deposited with the Field Mu- seum (Chicago). -

Abstract Extensive new collections contribute new information on the identity and distribution of the oedemerid beetles of the Galiipagos Islands. Specimens previously recorded as near Oxacis pilosa CHAMPION are descn'bed as Oxycopis galapagoensis sp. n. Oxacis pilosa CHAMPION of Guatemala and Nicaragua is transferred to the genus Oxycopis. Hypasclera collenettei (BLAIR) is the most common and widespread species in the islands, and is variable in that it shows significant differences in aedeagus morphology between separate islands. Alloxacis hoodi V AN DYKE is found be a synonym of H. collenettei. H. seymourensis (MUTCHLER) is known only from the central islands. Paroxacis galapagoensis (LINELL) is also widespread. All four Galapagos species are presently considered to be endemic, and each represents a separate ancestral colonization of the archipelago. Adults are found frequently at lights or by sweeping vegetation, and they are obligate pollen feeders (AR.NETT, 1984). Larvae may feed on plant roots or may be inhabitants of moist decaying wood and some may live in salt-soaked driftwood (ARNETT, 1984, KrusKA, 2002). Oedemerids have been described and reported from the Galapagos by several workers: BLAIR (1928; 1933); F'RANZ (1985); LINELL (1898); MUTCHLER (1938); and VAN DYKE (1953). -

(type species: E. kapleri sp. nov.) from Malaysia, Sabah is described, and its taxonomic placement is discussed. The current concept of the phylogeny and classification of Histeridae is critically examined. Based on cladistic analysis of 50 taxa and 29 characters of adult Histeridae a new hypothesis of phylogeny of the family is presented. In the concordance with the proposed phylogeny, the family is divided into three groups: Niponiomorphae (incl. Niponiinae), Abraeomorphae and Histeromorphae. The Abraeomorphae includes: Abraeinae, Saprininae, Dendrophilinae and Trypanaeinae. The Histeromorphae is divided into 4 subfamilies: Histerinae, Onthophilinae, Chlamydopsinae and Hetaeriinae. Hence, an aim to enrich the knowledge of this coleopteran family through a survey across different Lebanese regions in this work. Sev- enteen species belonging to the genera Atholus Thomson, 1859,Hemisaprinus Kryzhanovskij, 1976, Hister Linnaeus, 1758, Hypocacculus Bickhardt, 1914, Margarinotus Marseul, 1853, Saprinus Erichson, 1834, Tribalus Erichson, 1834, and Xenonychus Wollaston, 1864 were recorded. Specimens were sampled mainly with pitfall traps baited with ephemeral materials like pig dung, decayed fish, and pig carcasses. Several species were collected by sifting soil detritus, sand cascading, and other specialized techniques. Six newly recorded species for the Lebanese fauna are the necrophilous Hister sepulchralis Erichson, 1834, Hemisap- rinus subvirescens (Ménétriés, 1832), Saprinus (Saprinus) externus (Fischer von Waldheim, 1823), Saprinus (Saprinus) figuratus Marseul, 1855, and Saprinus (Saprinus) niger (Motschulsky, 1849) all associated with rotting fish and dung, and the psammophilousXenonychus tridens (Jacquelin du Val, 1853). -

The first catalogue of Lampyridae was published in 1907 and since that time, the classification and systematics of fireflies have been in flux. Several more recent catalogues and classification schemes have been published, but rarely have they taken phylogenetic history into account. Here I infer the first large scale anchored hybrid enrichment phylogeny for the fireflies and use this phylogeny as a backbone to inform classification. -
