Anwar: Back us if you agree with our policies Malaysiakini.com March 3, 2007 Soon Li Tsin Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Anwar Ibrahim made a fiery speech asking for opposition party leaders and members to work hard in the coming elections. Speaking to a 600-strong crowd that gathered at the party’s Chinese New Year open house in Kuala Lumpur last night, Anwar tested his Mandarin much to the crowd’s delight. “Xin nian hao, nian nian hao (happy new year, every year’s a good year),” he greeted to start off his address. In his speech that was sandwiched between singing and harmonica performances, he touched on several issues briefly including the recent dip in the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index. “We want our economy to be better and not have the market perform so badly [...] we don’t want the cost of living to rise ... we want our economy to be taken care off. “If we want every year to be good, we must work hard because Malaysia is (a) good (country), the people are good but the government is not good,” he smiled as the crowd gave a thunderous applause. No empty promises The former deputy premier then switched to a serious tone as he made references to the coming general election. “I’ll be honest tonight, I believe people will be spirited in the coming elections. Last time, Pak Lah had plans but his plans have all been postponed. “We must work hard to change the government. If want to really change the government, we must have a good programme for the people,” he said.

Pusat Khidmat Kelana Jaya Newsletter Issue #5 1 WONG CHEN Member of Parliament Kelana Jaya Constituency Newsletter Issue #5 July 2015 Greetings from your Member of Parliament! IN THIS ISSUE Dear Kelana Jayans, Parliamentary Sessions Update: This is my fifth newsletter to the people of Kelana Jaya and it is a mid-year issue. We Terrorism legislations and RMK-11 will endeavour to update you of our activities and events every six months. The first six months of 2015 has seen tremendous political and economic developments in Malaysia. The incarceration of Anwar Ibrahim and the recent PAS Muktamar has effectively ended Pakatan Rakyat. As I write, the progressive members of PAS are regrouping with the prospects of forming a new party. I wish them Godspeed in their endeavours. We may yet emerge stronger than ever. On the other side of the political front, the very public quarrel between Dr. Mahathir and Prime Minister Najib is nearing boiling point. Political rumours and Community Projects: prospects of a change in leadership has become a norm topic of conversations. Medical camps and revamping a Ostensibly, the fight centers on the 1MDB story. The 1MDB financial scandal has kindergarten in Ladang Glenmarie had tremendous negative impact on investor and business confidence. The government is now trying to turn the tables and say that lies were spread by Constituency Matters: “economic saboteurs” on 1MDB. An observation by many, is that the thieves remain Objecting re-delineation in Kelana Jaya unpunished, but the whistleblowers are now being targeted. and the SS7 PKNS field issue On the consumer side, the introduction of the GST has substantially dampened Community Dialogues: consumer sentiment.

ISSUE #17 CONSTITUENCY NEWSLETTER JANUARY - JUNE 2021 WONG CHEN MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR SUBANG PUSAT KHIDMAT RAKYAT PARLIMEN SUBANG (P104) Table of Contents Page 1 Foreword 01 2 Parliamentary Duties 03 3 Diplomatic Duties 04 4 Welfare & Community Updates 06 5 Officer’s Introduction 11 6 Interns’ Testimonials 12 7 Financial Statements & Allocation Spending 13 8 Media Engagements 15 9 Constituency Services 16 01 Foreword by Wong Chen My dear Constituents of Subang, The first six months of 2021 have been strange, bewildering and overall sad for Malaysia. For the last two months, we have been hit very hard by the pandemic and there seems to be no near end in sight. The Emergency proclamation in January, ostensibly to fight COVID-19 has now been proven to be a complete political sham. Malaysia is the only country in the world where after Emergency has been declared (together with the suspension of Parliament), the pandemic situation has actually worsened instead of improving. This inability to contain the pandemic is the result of an incompetent and anti-democratic government that is weak in leadership and poor in policy planning. I get no joy in criticising the PN government but it is now as clear as day that without the checks and balances provided by parliament, their incompetency will only grow to the detriment of Malaysians from the pandemic. However, this newsletter is not so much about politics; for that you can follow me on my active social media posts. This newsletter is basically a report card of sorts of what my office and I have been doing in the last six months.

February 11, 2016 The Honorable Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As members of parliament from Southeast Asia, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we write to express our desire for you to make discussion of human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of ASEAN a priority during the upcoming summit at the Sunnylands estate in California on 15-16 February 2016. As you are surely aware, democracy is struggling in Southeast Asia. Many countries in our region have taken dramatic steps backward in the past two years. While Southeast Asia appeared to be on the cusp of a genuine political transformation only a few years ago, more recently the region has instead witnessed military takeovers, the rollback of fundamental rights, intensifying government-sponsored discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and the increasing persecution of activists and opposition voices, including fellow parliamentarians. These setbacks constitute a fundamental threat to the future of the ASEAN Community and the US relationship with it. While we recognize and understand your administration’s desire to strengthen trade and security cooperation with Southeast Asian governments, we urge you to proceed with caution. Human rights, democracy, and basic dignity cannot take a backseat to economic or security prerogatives. Open dialogue on fundamental political and rights-based questions is vital to ensuring the sustainability of bilateral relationships and promoting broad-based benefits of trans-Pacific cooperation. When you sit down with ASEAN leaders in California, we urge you to press them on unfulfilled human rights commitments and to directly raise specific concerns with them.
