WALLACEBURG & DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 152 Duncan Street; Wallaceburg, ON; N8A 4E2 Phone: (519) 627-1443 Fax: (519) 627-1485 Website: http://www.wallaceburgchamber.com Email: [email protected] A message from the President, Kevin Cavanagh All indicators continue to show that we had reached the bottom of our economic valley this winter past and are gazing upwards toward a misty peak. St. Clair Technologies, Vannatters, Dura-Chrome and Aarkel report a resurgence in the automotive industry and YA Canada has continued to add staff well be- yond their original prediction. WPP, the new sub-assembly plant for Navistar has begun to re- ceive applications for their 200 job facility. Oxford has had to keep their doors open due to de- mand. Select Finishing has received approval to begin production. In the our local economy I would venture to say that the cycle has begun to turn. That which goes around, is on it's way to coming around. Your Chamber has also continued to turn corners as the board of directors has recently concluded it's strategic planning training. Our strategic plan is in the midst of finishing touches and will be published in the next Chamber newsletter. The various Chatham-Kent Chambers of Commerce recently came together in order to resurrect the Coalition of Chambers in order to further lo- cal issues with a unified voice. This is further proof that the municipality is continuing to gel and work through the challenges of amalgamation. Tracy Sylvain has continued to build upon the energy of Stu & Tammy McFadden's Com- munity Business After Hours by bringing together multiple community organizations to sponsor each event. June's Business After Hours at Mitchell's Bay Marina had 14 sponsoring exhibitors displaying the advantages of visiting the bay! Al Bechard is creating another Chamber networking opportunity for November. The Chamber will be partnering with the Sydenham Curling Club to host the first annual Chamber Bonspiel Christmas Party. The event held at the Moose Lodge, April 27th, hosted by Sobeys was a huge suc- cess. A special thank you to the community of Wallaceburg for making it a wonderful night. It was an example of what Wallaceburg is all about, pulling to- gether and celebrating the good that happens in our community. A great job done by Stuart & Tammy McFadden, Dave Elliott, Kevin Cavanagh and all the staff at Wallaceburg.ca. Thank you to the following sponsors for helping to make this event possible: Adult Literacy, Crime Stoppers, Chatham Capitol Theatre, Wallaceburg.ca, Opportunities Fund, Alzheimer Society, Super Cities Walk for MS, Park Street Place, WAMBO, Arts Council, Rotary Club of Wallaceburg, Courier Press, Baldoon Bi- Centennial, Wallaceburg Legion, Ontario Works, Breast Cancer Society & Breast Bud- dies, Wallaceburg Minor Lacrosse, Chatham-Kent EDS, Sydenham Field Naturalist, Block Parent, United Way, Tim Hortons, Dresden Telegraph and Community Living Wallaceburg. Working in the grocery business requires excellent customer service and dependability, two skills that Shawn has developed since being hired by Paul last October. Shawn’s love for his job shows through in his smile and willing- ness to take on any task given to him by his employer. When Shawn left high school he chose to apply for employment supports with the Ontario Disability Supports Program, a provincially funded service aimed at assisting people with disabilities secure employment. Community Liv- ing Wallaceburg is an approved service provider for the program and has assisted Shawn with his employment goal. With the support provided through Community Living Wallaceburg Shawn was able to acquire an interview at No Frills. Paul was quick to realize Shawn’s capabilities and decided to hire him on the spot. The result has been a mutu- ally beneficial relationship for both employer and employee. When not running for bags of milk, chasing down grocery carts or helping customers out of the store with their bags, Shawn spends most of his time at No Frills stocking shelves. He has proved to be a very dependable employee always on time and willing to take on extra shifts if needed. The Community & Employment Services program delivered by Community Living Wallaceburg has a talented pool of potential employees like Shawn that can be pre-screened and matched to your job tasks. We provide support systems for you and your employees, making hiring easier. Contact us about your employment needs and let us prove to you why it makes great business sense to hire individuals with disabilities.
