Moral Realism facts that peoples’ moral judgments are true or false, and that the facts being what they are (and so the judgments being true, when they are) is not merely a Geoffrey Sayre-McCord reflection of our thinking the facts are one way or another. Love as a Moral Emotion* J. David Velleman INTRODUCTION Love and morality are generally assumed to differ in spirit. The moral point of view is impartial and favors no particular individual, whereas favoring someone in particular seems like the very essence of love. Love and morality are therefore thought to place con¯icting demands on our attention, requiring us to look at things differently, whether or not they ultimately require us to do different things.1 The question is supposed to be whether a person can do justice to both perspectives. Norms and Reasons Benjamin Sorgiovanni B.A. (Hons) Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts University of Melbourne September 2009 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Masters (by research) (by Coursework and Shorter Thesis) Abstract The concept of normativity is currently enjoying a period in philosophical vogue; it is at the centre of contemporary debates in fields as diverse as ethics and epistemology. Despite its popularity, the question of how we might best understand normativity remains a disputed one. Generally speaking, philosophers have favoured an intellectualist interpretation. It is typically assumed, for instance, that our engaging our higher-order capacities, our capacities for judgment, deliberation and reasoning, constitutes a necessary condition for our being sensitive to normative phenomena. Recently, however, an increasing number of philosophers have made the case for our favouring an anti-intellectualist interpretation, on the grounds, for example, that intellectualist frameworks are overly restrictive. In this study I assess these two competing accounts of normativity at the level of their respective positions regarding the connection between guidance by norms and guidance by reasons. Typically, intellectualists hold that if a norm is to guide action such that that action is also guided by reasons it is necessary that it be a norm which has some clear association with judgment and deliberation. Anti-intellectualists typically disagree; they are not inclined to see a norm's being disconnected from judgment and deliberation as decisive against that norm's guiding action which is also guided by reasons. In the first chapter I present Allan Gibbard's intellectualist analysis of the connection between guidance by norms and guidance by reasons. -

Because Kantian and Humean accounts of agency emphasize the individual over the social, they lack explanatory resources important to un- derstanding how others can matter to us as agents in the right way. Insufficiently social conceptions of agency, I argue, risk depicting agents as alienated from one another, leaving mysterious how we can get a normative grip on one another. Taking inspiration from GWF Hegel and Iris Murdoch, I develop a conception of agency on which it constitutively depends on standing in relations of mutual recognition with other agents. -

Schmoozy Introduction Peter Railton University of Michigan Introduction If practical reason is concerned with thoughtful normative regulation of action, then theoretical reason might be seen as a matter of thoughtful normative regulation of belief. The conclusion of a piece of practical reasoning, we are told, is an act or intention to act; the conclusion of a piece of theoretical reasoning, by parallel, would be a belief or a belief-tendency. Because theoretical reason is understood to be responsive specifically to epistemic – not merely pragmatic – reasons for belief, the norms involved in theoretical reason are norms pertinent to knowledge, including norms of evidence, justification, and truth. In both the practical and theoretical case we need not exactly agree with the conclusion another person reaches in order to attribute rationality to her – but it seems we do need to find something normatively appropriate about the means by which the other reaches her conclusion, given her capacities and circumstances. A somewhat fancier way of putting this: we need to see her as responding to the relevant sort of reasons in an apt way. Moral philosophers have long found practical reason puzzling “by its very nature”. Practical rationality would appear to call for a kind of reasoning unknown to orthodox logic – a process Aristotle called “appetitive intellect or intellectual appetition”, of which Athe final step is the starting-point of action”. Appetite, as Aristotle would put it, belongs to the alogon part of the soul – but how then can we be intellectual about it, or deliberate with it, since intellect and deliberation belong to logos? Aristotle says that “Moral Science may be of great value to those who guide their desires and actions by principle (kata logon)” ( NE 1095a16). -

Introduction Immanuel Kant and David Hume developed moral theories that diverged from each other in many respects. Hume famously claimed that reason is the slave of passions and it cannot provide a motive for the human will to attain an end. Kant explicitly rejected this claim and equally famously argued that pure reason by itself can be practical and determine the will independently of our passions. Besides the power reason has to determine the will, the two philosophers also disagreed about the nature of moral judgment. Hume believed that our moral judgments arise from feelings of approbation and disapproval. According to him, when a moral agent reflects on an action, she develops certain sentiments about the moral value of the action and makes a moral judgment. Kant, however, believed that because there is a moral law we can appeal to regardless of our inclinations in order to identify the moral value of an action, we can make moral judgments that do not reflect our sentiments. My first main aim in this paper is to show that Hume’s anti-rationalist sentimentalist account of moral judgment faces an important problem. Hume’s account leads us to a point where a moral dialogue in which moral agents with conflicting sentiments about a morally significant situation can be included is impossible. I argue that Hume’s sentiment-based theory of moral judgment fails to lay the basis for an inclusive moral dialogue for moral agents who do not share the same set of sentiments with respect to a moral issue due to differences about the social contexts of their upbringing and education. -
