    In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth.     A former Townsville Bulletin sports editor who played a key role in the establishment of the North Queensland Cowboys has called for major changes at board level to get the struggling club back on track. Doug Kingston, who floated the idea that North Queensland should have a Winfield Cup (now NRL) team in a story in the Townsville Bulletin back in 1989, called and chaired the first meeting, and worked on a voluntary basis to help get the team into the national competition, believes the current Cowboys board appears to have lost sight of the core reason the club was established. "Unless major changes are made in the composition of the Cowboys board the club faces a bleak future," Kingston said. "The secrecy surrounding the board of directors gives rise to suspicion that it is a closed shop, which has lost sight of the core reason the club was established. "During the past few weeks I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find out just who is on the NQ Cowboys board. My quest to identify the current board members included numerous Google searches and an email to NQ Cowboys chairman, Lewis Ramsay, requesting details of board members and the procedure for appointment of board members. I also asked Mr Ramsay if any of the current board members were elected by a vote of club members. "Mr Ramsay replied that these matters were ‘confidential’. Kingston then wrote back to Mr Ramsay saying: "In the absence of your advice to the contrary, I will assume that the Cowboys Leagues Club currently owns the North Queensland Cowboys football club/team, having acquired it in 2015 from News Limited.

Her grandmothers, mother Audella, and older sister Harriet helped her fall in love with art. In fact, she initially took up sculpture in order to follow Harriet, with whom she sometimes collaborated. While her female relatives inspired her career, her father influenced her subject matter. Alpheus Hyatt was a zoologist and paleontologist, so it is little wonder that Anna chose to specialize in animal sculpture. She seems to have enjoyed a close connection to and understanding of animals, both of which shine through in her art. Huntington started her career by making small-scale animal figurines. She was successful in this popular genre, selling hundreds of copies of some creations. She received between $25 and $335 for even the more modest versions. This was especially true once she moved to New York in 1902 or 1903. Although Anna Hyatt Huntington made her reputation through small works, she didn’t stop there. She soon graduated to large- scale public sculpture projects. Joan of Arc. In 1915, Huntington received a monumental commission for Riverside Park in New York City – an equestrian statue of the medieval French heroine Joan of Arc (ca. 1412-1431). Huntington had first planned Joan of Arc while in Paris in 1910. While the huge horse kept with her specialty of animal sculpture, the work overall represented a significant departure in scale and subject matter. Horses, in general, and equestrian statues particularly would thereafter feature prominently in her career.

    Polls and Elections Southern Discomfort? Regional Differences in Voter Decision Making in the 2000 Presidential Election D. SUNSHINE HILLYGUS Harvard University TODD SHIELDS University of Arkansas The South has undergone dramatic changes in population, economics, and partisanship in recent decades, leading scholars to conclude that the New South has lost many of its unique patterns of voting behavior. Using an extensive data set that contains sufficient sample sizes for regional comparisons, we estimate an interactive model of vote choice in the 2000 presidential election to compare the decision making of Southern and non-Southern respondents. We find that the voting calculus of Southern voters remains distinct, particularly for those struggling with cross-pressures between ideology and party identification. These findings have theoretical impli- cations for general models of presidential voting behavior and practical relevance for under- standing election outcomes and the future of party politics in the South. The contemporary American South continues to experience dramatic changes in population, economics, and partisanship that have fundamentally altered the political landscape of not only the region but the entire nation. The wide-ranging effects of these developments on electoral behavior are not entirely understood, but it is unquestionable that the New South remains as important in American politics—particularly presidential elections—as the Old South. With nearly two-thirds of the Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency, the South is a considerable electoral prize.1 More than a 1. STILL A ROCK PARTY In the 2000 film The Contender, Senator Lane Hanson, por- trayed by Joan Allen, explains what catalyzed her switch from the Grand Old Party ("GOP") to the Democratic side of the aisle. During her dramatic Senate confirmation hearing for vice-presi- dent, she laments that "The Republican Party had shifted from the ideals I cherished in my youth." She lists those cherished ideals as "a woman's right to choose, taking guns out of every home, campaign finance reform, and the separation of church and state." Although this statement reflects Hollywood's usual penchant for oversimplification, her point con- cerning the recession of moderation in Republican ranks is still ap- ropos.
