Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Taming Anna by Elle Vaughn From Love to Art: Anna Hyatt Huntington, an American Sculptor. Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973) was born Anna Vaughn Hyatt near Boston. Her grandmothers, mother Audella, and older sister Harriet helped her fall in love with art. In fact, she initially took up sculpture in order to follow Harriet, with whom she sometimes collaborated. While her female relatives inspired her career, her father influenced her subject matter. Alpheus Hyatt was a zoologist and paleontologist, so it is little wonder that Anna chose to specialize in animal sculpture. She seems to have enjoyed a close connection to and understanding of animals, both of which shine through in her art. Huntington started her career by making small-scale animal figurines. She was successful in this popular genre, selling hundreds of copies of some creations. She received between $25 and $335 for even the more modest versions. This was especially true once she moved to New York in 1902 or 1903. Although Anna Hyatt Huntington made her reputation through small works, she didn’t stop there. She soon graduated to large- scale public sculpture projects. Joan of Arc. In 1915, Huntington received a monumental commission for Riverside Park in New York City – an equestrian statue of the medieval French heroine Joan of Arc (ca. 1412-1431). Huntington had first planned Joan of Arc while in Paris in 1910. While the huge horse kept with her specialty of animal sculpture, the work overall represented a significant departure in scale and subject matter. Horses, in general, and equestrian statues particularly would thereafter feature prominently in her career. She exhibited a version of Joan of Arc at the 1910 Paris Salon, where it won an award and attracted the attention of the Riverside Park committee. Huntington’s Joan of Arc claims two significant distinctions. First of all, it made Huntington the first woman to ever receive a public art commission in Manhattan. The statue was also the first in the city to honor an historical, rather than fictional or allegorical, woman. It still stands today at West 93rd Street and Riverside Drive. There are also copies at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco and elsewhere. Meanwhile, Huntington made a very different Joan of Arc monument – this one carved out of marble in a much more reflective posture – for the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in Manhattan. Diana of the Chase. In 1922, Anna Hyatt Huntington became a full member of the National Academy of Design. For the occasion, she donated to the academy’s collection an almost 100-inch-high bronze sculpture of Diana. The Roman goddess of the hunt was a popular sculptural subject at the time, but Huntington made it her own. She sculpted an elegant, life-sized nude figure lifting her hunting bow aloft with a dancer’s grace, while an equally- elegant hound frolics at her feet. Huntington’s choice of subject was fitting, as the Academy closely associated itself with this mythological huntress. Diana of the Chase still resides in the National Academy’s collection, while subsequent casts appear in museum collections all over the world. El Cid Campeador. In 1923, Anna Vaughn Hyatt married wealthy scholar and philanthropist Archer Huntington (1870-1955). In doing so, she joined a prominent family of American art collectors, headed by Archer’s parents, Collis and Arabella Huntington. Perhaps unusual for this time, the marriage only strengthened Anna Hyatt Huntington’s art career. Archer Huntington’s connections helped Anna get work in major institutions. His money allowed her to cast her pieces on a larger scale. The two also collaborated on a significant new project. As a lifelong scholar, collector, and admirer of Spanish art and culture, Archer Huntington established the Hispanic Society of America in 1904. After meeting Anna in 1921 – and probably before they were even married – he brought her in on plans for the still-developing institution’s building. In 1927, Anna completed El Cid Campeador , a monumental equestrian bronze sculpture of a medieval Spanish military hero. Archer Huntington had translated Cantar del Mio Cid , an epic poem about El Cid, into English in 1907. Anna’s sculpture dominates the Hispanic Society’s Audubon Courtyard. She also created several animal-themed relief plaques for the Hispanic Society. Several other copies of El Cid also exist, including versions in Argentina and Spain. King Alphonso XIII of Spain awarded Anna Hyatt Huntington the Grand Cross of Alfonso XII in 1929 because of the success of her El Cid . Brookgreen Gardens. Archer and Anna Huntington were prolific philanthropists who suported many cultural institutions. They also founded Brookgreen Gardens, a nature preserve and sculpture garden in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, in 1931. They had purchased the property the year before, originally planning to create a private retreat there. In addition to preserving local plants and animals, Brookgreen boasts a large sculpture garden filled with works by Anna Hyatt Huntington and fellow American sculptors. You can still see many of Huntington’s works there today, including versions of Diana , Joan of Arc , and El Cid , alongside other figurative sculptures in both metal and stone. Visiting Anna’s Work. In New York City, you can find Anna Hyatt Huntington’s sculptures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hispanic Society, Bronx Zoo, Columbia University, Bronx Community College, National Academy of Design, New-York Historical Society, Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, Central Park, and Riverside Park. Other examples of her work appear at museums, parks, and historic sites throughout the northeastern United States and California, as well as en masse at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina. But one of my colleagues read it for me and still found some mistakes. How is this possible with the number of times I read it and re-read it? The answer is in your brain. As you write your book, your brain remembers what it is that you mean to write as you write it and when you go back to proofread it, it looks right! Weird, huh? For example: This may be what you intended to write: She took a long drink of water, thirsty from exertion. But this is what you actually wrote: She took a long drink of water, thirsty from exersion. The two words look similar, but only one is correct. Can you spot it? It can be tricky seeing tiny errors such as this, but it’s even more challenging to spot them in your own work. Chances are you would skim right past that sentence and never give it another thought. Your brain is actually telling you that it looks right. But if you’re determined to do your own editing and proofreading, here are some tips: Read out loud – This helps give your brain a different perspective. Run your finger or a pen under each line slowly as you read them – This will help you catch tiny mistakes. After you read a paragraph, sit back and look at it as a whole – Does it look right? He is Raymond Reddington's sworn bodyguard and one of his closest friends, having been rescued by Red from human trafficking as a child. Contents. Background [ edit | edit source ] Dembe is introduced as a former freedom fighter from South Sudan. It was assumed that he was Raymond Reddington's bodyguard. In “The Mombasa Cartel” it is revealed that he was born the youngest son of a farmer named Samwel Zuma. When Samwel reported a number of low- ranking operatives of the Mombasa Cartel, a poaching organization, to the authorities, the cartel killed Dembe's father, mother, and siblings, and sold Dembe to human traffickers. At some point, he was being held by the Eberhardt Cartel. He spent 8 years in the world of human trafficking and was enslaved until the age of 14, when Reddington found him half-dead and chained to a pipe in the basement of a brothel in Nairobi. Reddington took care of him, nursed him back to health, and made sure he got an education. Dembe eventually earned a Bachelor's degree in English Literature, learned to speak 4 languages fluently and learned 6 others well enough to get by. There are confirmed reports that Dembe was with Red in Sierra Leone and Brussels, Belgium. Other reports place him and Red in Murmansk and Belfast. Dembe claimed that there are 3 people he cares about in the whole world, his daughter Isabella, his granddaughter Elle, and Raymond. Dembe is among the very few who know that Raymond is not the real Raymond Reddington, but an imposter who took over his identity over 30 years ago. Season 1 [ edit | edit source ] “The Freelancer” [ edit | edit source ] Along with Luli Zeng, he was “the least offensive” to Harold Cooper and Diane Fowler for service in Red's security detail. He is Red's driver. When Liz visits Floriana Campo's room after being told Red had hired the Freelancer, it is Dembe who is on guard outside the door. He follows her inside and watches while Campo dies. Back at the Post Office, while Dembe is changing Donald Ressler sees the mark of the Eberhardt Cartel on his shoulder. “Wujing” [ edit | edit source ] He and Luli Zeng pick up Elizabeth Keen and Raymond Reddington, after Wujing drops them off, in Red's limousine. “The Stewmaker” [ edit | edit source ] He is with Red when he meets with Liz to tell her that Hector Lorca has contacted him about a new identity. He accompanies Red while he makes a new deal with Max Ruddiger, possibly to intimidate Max, as during the negotiations he stands behind Max. “Frederick Barnes” [ edit | edit source ] He is with Red at his tailors when Red calls the tip-line regarding the subway attack. He remains while Red briefs Liz and Ressler on Frederick Barnes. He is surprised when Liz walks past the car when Red is on the way to Cuba. He drives Red away from the Forrester home. He accompanies Red and Luli Zeng to the house and rigs the explosive that destroys Raymond Reddington's old house. “General Ludd” [ edit | edit source ] He held a gun on Nathaniel Wolff while Red stole the hard drive containing the program for the new 100 dollar banknote design. “Anslo Garrick” [ edit | edit source ] Garrick's men capture him separately from Red. After shooting Luli, Garrick points a gun to Dembe's head to force Red to get out of the box. Red pleads with Harold to give him the code, which Harold refuses. Red then tries to revive Ressler to extract the code from him, but he remains unconscious. Dembe urges him to say goodbye. Solomon threatens Elle's life by suggesting he gave her a poisonous nerve agent and Dembe will not get the antidote unless he wears a chemical mask and inhales. Without hesitation, Dembe takes the mask and takes several slow breaths, his eyes fluttering shut. In the mask appears to be a sleeping gas. “Eli Matchett” [ edit | edit source ] Season 4 [ edit | edit source ] “The Apothecary” [ edit | edit source ] Dembe is revealed to have poured the drink that poisoned Red. “Dembe Zuma” [ edit | edit source ] Dembe kidnaps Aram who believes Dembe wants him to help rob Reddington. However, Dembe leads Aram to an empty locker belonging to Reddington and admits that he did pour the poisoned drink, but did not poison it. Aram realizes that Dembe actually wants his help to find the true culprit and helps Dembe access the fingerprint identification information in the locker, but finds that its heavily encrypted which could take days to break. Dembe releases Aram who starts to leave, but recognizing that Dembe truly is innocent and just wants to help, offers another more dangerous way. Working together, Aram and Dembe break into a security company to crack the encryption. As Ressler and Samar arrive, Aram manages to discover that the culprit is Kathryn Nemec, shocking Dembe as he had believed Kate to be dead. Dembe refuses to return to Reddington without proof and flees Ressler and Samar. With Aram's help, Dembe escapes. Aram later reveals to the Task Force what he learned with Dembe and his belief that Dembe really was innocent and just trying to prove it. Dembe returns to the location where he and Reddington tried to kill Kate, only to find no sign of her. Using the prepaid phone Dembe sent to his daughter, Reddington contacts him and Dembe starts to tell Reddington what he has learned before he is attacked and wounded by the hunter that had rescued Kate. Dembe injures the man and escapes to the road where he is found and rescued by Liz and Reddington who returned to the area after learning from Aram of Dembe's discovery about Kate. As Reddington goes after the hunter and Kate, he has Liz rush Dembe to the hospital to treat his leg injury. Season 5 [ edit | edit source ] “Ian Garvey” [ edit | edit source ] After Liz and Tom are severely injured by Ian Garvey and his men, Dembe helps Reddington rescue them. Dembe observes that Tom has lost a lot of blood and doubts their chances of survival. With the help of a police escort arranged by Samar, Dembe rushes Liz and Tom to the hospital while Reddington rides in the backseat with the dying couple. As the doctors desperately work to save Liz and Tom's lives, Reddington is forced to wait outside in the car with Dembe who takes his hand in comfort. So I can't complain too much since this is a seriously cheap book but I must say you get what you pay for. It started off a little better than it ended. just not enough depth in the story. Also I just couldn't really get that these were two star faded mates destined to be together. I just didn't get the feel of these characters are really in love, they seemed weak and whinny. Good narration and accents. Enjoyable but I had to listen at a faster speed. Lovely and funny how these two are both willing to give up so much for the other. The last chapter SO funny in audible. BOOK REVIEW A fun light hearted read with some laugh out loud moments. This series entwines with and is loosely related and following on from the Takhini Shifters (2 books) as well as the Granite Lake Wolves series (8 books). As I have read both of these series and enjoyed them very much reading these books is no hardship. The two Takhini Shifters books are two of my favourite books ever This book is a fun light hearted read and should be taken as such. The story was good and I loved Gem, she was really trying to prove herself but didn’t need too. Gem has been raised pretty much in seclusion as the pampered princess of her daddy her whole life and knows nothing of the REAL world. Finding herself mated to the rough and ready Shaun was a hoot. Shaun is born and bred Yukon tough, he was a typical male wolf and I found his behaviour trying to change for Gem endearing but silly. He was what he was. Did find it funny he could not remember his first night with Gem. I loved all the other characters we met and will be looking forward to their stories.
