With a daily footfall of 3000 patients in our outpatient departments, approximately thousand surgeries per month and with 1400 inpatient admissions each month, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has established itself as a central tertiary care facility of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The first batch of our students which has passed out have done us proud in getting very high ranks in the All India PG entrance exams and many of them are now starting their postgraduation courses in AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER, JIPMER and other Institutions of repute. From time to time our students and residents have also won quiz competitions, cultural prizes, sports prizes, awards for paper presentation etc., and we acknowledge and appreciate their efforts. We have tried to improve the ambience and the facilities of the institution which can support and maintain the physical wellbeing of our students. I had the pleasure of opening a much-needed gymnasium, a multipurpose hall with laundry facilities, a stationery shop and the highly appreciated and required cafeteria. We have also redone the basketball court and badminton courts. The children within the campus can now play in a kiddies play corner with swings, slides, see-saws and other play equipment which has been set-up. The Type V staff quarters has also been completed and faculty and staff have moved in. In the past one year, I had the privilege of opening many new facilities and conveniences for patients, students and the public. Bisram Gruha, a patient waiting facility was inaugurated by the hon’ble minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, as a temporary waiting shelter for the many patients and their attenders who come from far off places. NALCO has generously agreed for a five storied night shelter building to house 560 patients and their attenders at the cost of 26 crores and the MoU has been signed for setting this up. Discussions are on with NTPC for a specialized Burns unit as a part of their CSR. We have built two public toilet complexes, one near Bisram Gruha and one near the Casualty for the convenience of patients. Drinking water facility has been built near the entrance gate. Canteen facilities to provide breakfast and lunch and a cafeteria which provides snacks and tea/coffee has also been built for the convenience of patients and staff. The patient care services at AIIMS Bhubaneswar were constantly being improved upon to make the AIIMS experience a pleasurable and trouble-free one for the patients and their attenders. A new separate counter for registration of patients coming to trauma & emergency and a triage area in the Dept. of Trauma & Emergency was put in place. An OT complex with three more new theatres and an adjoining ICU complex with MICU, PICU & NICU were also officially inaugurated in July 2017. We now have seven OTs including one emergency OT. The High Energy Linear Accelerator, Brachytherapy and CT simulator in the Dept. of Radiotherapy and the Gamma Camera services in the Dept. of Nuclear Medicine were inaugurated this year by The Hon’ble Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan. Many 5 ANNUAL REPORT | 2017-18 specialty clinics like Upper GI endoscopy clinic, a comprehensive breast centre, coloproctology clinic were started. The Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy has established a unit at AIIMS which strengthens the facilities already in place by providing high-end Naturopathy care. On the academic front, the MBBS students who joined went through a structured foundation course, which included interactive sessions on communications, working as a team, stress management and healthy lifestyle, tips on how to study medicine etc. These topics are being taught besides first aid and basic life support training. For the first time, we held exit Objective Structured Clinical Exercises (OSCEs) for the interns who were about to complete their course, thereby assessing and documenting that AIIMS Bhubaneswar graduates have the necessary basic clinical skills expected of interns. The College of Nursing now boasts a full strength in faculty and with tutors. With the new Principal in place, providing direction and focus, they have widened the scope of involvement and engagement with the hospital. They have conducted outreach camps to inculcate a sense of social responsibility in the nursing students, training in emergency procedures for our nurses and celebrated important days with patient education programmes and training of student nurses. The Administration section has done many rounds of faculty recruitment, tutors recruitment for College of Nursing, advertising 1212 posts and completing the Computer Based Test for the advertised posts. In addition, regular interviews have been held for filling up the various posts on deputation. The procurement section has been coping up marvelously with the increased demand for consumables, equipment, furniture and so many other items including tenders. We have entered into an MoU with HLL for procurement of equipment costing more than 30 lakhs. The AIIMS Bhubaneswar library has a large number of journals and books so that our faculty and students will not want for journals in their field and will stay updated. Winning the second prize of one crore rupees for the Category B hospitals at the Kayakalp award ceremony was one of the major achievements of our institution. This was an affirmation of the hard work by not just the Kayakalp team but of each and every single person of the AIIMS family who contributed to keeping the hospital and its environment clean. In the month of November last year, AIIMS Bhubaneswar was named Best Public Hospital in East India by The Week magazine. We were also rated the Best Specialty hospital in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. The Dept of Obstetrics & Gynecology was named the 15th best for providing obstetrics & Gynecology services on an all India basis. These are indeed satisfying honors, and we are proud to receive them as they stake our claim that we have indeed arrived. The Engineering division has executed a great deal of work in making certain that all wards are ready to be handed over and that the project phase of the construction is completed. The maintenance contract that was awarded has eased the problem of dealing with small issues in plumbing, carpentry work, civil and electrical work on a daily basis. The IT cell has worked tirelessly to provide the much needed infrastructure for our IT needs. Security has always been a tricky and complex issue at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Though we have faced incidents of violence against our residents, vandalism and thefts, we hope that the additional security measures put in place will be a deterrent. The AIIMS Satellite OPD centre at Balasore started on July 8th, 2017 with logistic support from the 6 ANNUAL REPORT | 2017-18 DRDO and ITR. The weekly OPD services provided by 3-4 specialists and/or super specialists has benefitted people of North Odisha. This would not have been possible if not for the interest, enthusiasm and logistic support provided by the Director of ITR, Dr. B. Das and his enthusiastic team. Many workshops, seminars, conferences have been held and many public patient education lectures conducted. The holding of formal, regular, monthly mortality and morbidity meetings has started. The Internal Complaints Committee has conducted many sensitization programmes for faculty and staff on sexual harassment in the workplace this past year. The medical education unit and research cell have been inspired to conduct many faculty development programmes on research methodology, medical education, PG and intern’s orientation programmes and so on.
