Page 10 THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL SPORTS FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2008 – A-7 NFL | NINERS OFFSEASON Niners QB Alex Smith ready to move past troubles with injuries, coaches By GREG BEACHAM Associated Press SANTA CLARA — Alex Smith is back in the weight room and on the ’ practice fields, working to get healthy for an uncertain future with his fourth offensive coordinator in four NFL seasons. At least the quarterback has resolved his differences with his head coach, he claims. Four months ago, that relation- ship seemed more damaged than the for- mer No. 1 draft pick’s injured shoulder. Smith spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since undergoing season-end- ing surgery on his throwing shoulder in mid-December, a dour end to a dismal season that included a prolonged public disagreement with coach Mike Nolan. “It was such a crazy situation last year,” Smith said. “We’re both excited to be moving on from it.” Smith claims to be encouraged by the 49ers’ latest coaching overhaul, with coordinator Mike Martz arriving and Nolan staying while old coordinator Jim Hostler, quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti and other offensive assistants departed. Smith and Nolan were on much shaki- er ground late last year, when the strug- gling quarterback publicly questioned the 49ers’ handling of the shoulder injury that eventually ended his season. Smith also claimed Nolan undermined him in comments to his teammates, and Smith rarely appeared at the 49ers’ training complex after his surgery. “He and I are both looking forward to putting last year behind us,” Smith said. “I’ve talked to him several times and file photo we’re both excited about it. The decision of the Cosco Busan’s crew and pilot to get moving despite the weather is a focus of the Coast Guard’s investigation into the Nov. 7 collision that spilled 53,000 gallons of oil into the bay’s fragile ecosystem. With visibility less than a quarter-mile, pilots and crew on the other four ships “deemed it prudent not to get under way until visibility improved,” Rear Adm. Craig Bone, the Coast Guard commander for California, told reporters Thursday in a preliminary assessment of the accident. “These human decisions are critical elements to causal factors of this casualty,” Bone said. Bone also said the Coast Guard has instituted a policy in the Port of San Francisco prohibiting ships larger than 1,600 gross tons from traveling in nine areas of the bay when port visibility is less than a half-mile. The Cosco Busan was more than 65,000 gross tons. The ongoing Coast Guard investigation is one of sever- al.
