Having served both Parliament and king in the Civil Wars of the 1640s, and charted a precarious but profitable path through the shifting regimes and factions of the 1650s, he turned again after monarchy was restored, and just before his death in the later 1670s was accepting pay for his attacks on Shaftesbury. © Copyrighted Material limits of his current political masters with audacious and provocative journalism was apparently matched only by his aptitude for slipping across political divides to serve new masters when circumstances – personal and national – demanded it. -

London and Middlesex in the 1660s Introduction: The early modern metropolis first comes into sharp visual focus in the middle of the seventeenth century, for a number of reasons. Most obviously this is the period when Wenceslas Hollar was depicting the capital and its inhabitants, with views of Covent Garden, the Royal Exchange, London women, his great panoramic view from Milbank to Greenwich, and his vignettes of palaces and country-houses in the environs. His oblique birds-eye map- view of Drury Lane and Covent Garden around 1660 offers an extraordinary level of detail of the streetscape and architectural texture of the area, from great mansions to modest cottages, while the map of the burnt city he issued shortly after the Fire of 1666 preserves a record of the medieval street-plan, dotted with churches and public buildings, as well as giving a glimpse of the unburned areas.1 Although the Fire destroyed most of the historic core of London, the need to rebuild the burnt city generated numerous surveys, plans, and written accounts of individual properties, and stimulated the production of a new and large-scale map of the city in 1676.2 Late-seventeenth-century maps of London included more of the spreading suburbs, east and west, while outer Middlesex was covered in rather less detail by county maps such as that of 1667, published by Richard Blome [Fig. 5]. In addition to the visual representations of mid-seventeenth-century London, a wider range of documentary sources for the city and its people becomes available to the historian. -

Secretary and Olive Bowyer Assistant Secretary. John Humphreys was then a committee member. After being appointed Hon. Secretary, John maintained that position until this year when he announced that he wished to retire after twenty-seven years and, perhaps, serve as a committee member again. All that time, John has been a pivotal member, keeping records, arranging committee meetings and the AGM, dealing with correspondence and the many other calls on a Secretary. He arranged the summer outings, which he researched meticulously, often rehearsing the journey beforehand with his wife Una. John followed Roger Bryant as Honorary Curator of the Heritage Centre for a number of years. He looked after the artefacts, while Roger dealt with the archives. John collaborated with the Museum Service so that donated items were correctly recorded. At this time, Derek Brumhead was the Administrator and he also was an early member of the Society. John has long held an interest in the Co-operative Movement and has spoken and written on the subject. -

The conception of the court as an ‘extra-legal’ tribunal (or as a legitimate court that had exceeded its jurisdictional mandate) emerges from the constitutional debate about the limits of executive authority that played out over in Parliament, in the press, in the pulpit, in the courts, and on the battlefields of seventeenth-century England. -

Blakemore1 Introduction Pirates are popular. Inside academia and out, the pirate is a figure command- ing attention, fascination and quite often sympathy. Interpreted in various ways – as vicious criminals, romantic heroes, sexual revolutionaries or anarchistic opponents of capitalism – pirates possess an apparently inexhaustible appeal.2 The problem with “pirates,” of course, is that defining them is largely a ques- tion of perspective: perpetrators of maritime violence from Francis Drake to Blackbeard have been seen as both champions and murderers, and scholars have interrogated this very dimension of piracy as a historical concept. -

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned chiefly with the military role of sea power during the English Civil War. Parliament’s seizure of the Royal Navy in 1642 is examined in detail, with a discussion of the factors which led to the King’s loss of the fleet and the consequences thereafter. It is concluded that Charles I was outmanoeuvred politically, whilst Parliament’s choice to command the fleet, the Earl of Warwick, far surpassed him in popularity with the common seamen. The thesis then considers the advantages which control of the Navy provided for Parliament throughout the war, determining that the fleet’s protection of London, its ability to supply besieged outposts and its logistical support to Parliamentarian land forces was instrumental in preventing a Royalist victory. Furthermore, it is concluded that Warwick’s astute leadership went some way towards offsetting Parliament’s sporadic neglect of the Navy. The thesis demonstrates, however, that Parliament failed to establish the unchallenged command of the seas around the British Isles. -

Dr Eilish Gregory Catholic Forfeitures during the English Revolution: Parliament and the Role of Sequestration Agents In early November 1656, the Catholic William Blundell wrote to his nephew Thomas Selby updating him about the latest news in his home county of Lancashire and on matters of his estate. Blundell had previously told Selby about his dealings with agent Gilbert Crouch who was managing his sequestration and compounding affairs which were taking place in London. He remarked that Crouch had promised him ‘that he wil [sic] look carefully to my Exchequer busines’ and Blundell hoped that Selby would inform himself how best he could befriend Crouch, as he was apprehensive about the current dangers that was occurring at that time. Gilbert Crouch had purchased the sequestered estates of William Blundell; he held Blundell’s estates’ of Little Crosby and Ditton in trust until the Restoration. During the civil wars, Blundell had actively supported King Charles I and the Royalist cause, answering the call to serve the king in the Commission of Array in 1642, becoming a captain in the local dragoons before his capture and imprisonment. Consequently, his estates in Little Crosby in Lancashire were sequestered for delinquency and he spent much of the war petitioning to compound for his estates. Unlike the thousands that were sequestered for delinquency during the conflict, Blundell was well-versed in the art of sequestration and compounding for his estates. As a Catholic, he had frequently compounded for his estates for recusancy, and regularly paid his fines during Charles I’s Personal Rule in the 1630s. -

Rahe Excerpt More information part i THE ENGLISH COMMONWEALTHMEN or more than a century subsequent to his death in 1527, Niccolo` Machiavelli F was known to the larger world as a counselor of princes, as an enemy to morality and the Christian religion, and as an inspiration to the advocates of raison d’etat´ . It was not until after the execution of Charles I in January 1649 that he would become almost equally famous also as an advocate for republican rule. There is no great mystery in this. Machiavelli’s Prince is, at least on the surface, a much more accessible book than his Discourses on Livy. It is shorter, pithier, and more vigorous, and it enjoyed a grand succes` de scandale from the very first. In contrast, the Discourses on Livy is long, subtle, complex, and difficult to decipher. In short, the work in which republicanism looms large is as unattractive to the casual reader as The Prince is alluring. Even now, the longer book is much more rarely read. Of course, from the outset, there were those who argued that Machiavelli revealed his true opinions only in his Discourses on Livy. Within six years of the appearance of the Florentine’s two great masterpieces in printed form, an inquisitive and well-connected English visitor to Florence named Reginald Pole was told by one or more of Machiavelli’s compatriots that the author of the Discourses on Livy had written The Prince solely in order to trip up the Medici and bring about their demise. -

Medical History, 1995, 39: 197-218 The Dissenting Tradition in English Medicine of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries WILLIAM BIRKEN* In England, medicine has always been something of a refuge for individuals whose lives have been dislocated by religious and political strife. This was particularly true in the seventeenth century when changes in Church and State were occurring at a blinding speed. In his book The experience of defeat, Christopher Hill has described the erratic careers of a number of radical clergy and intellectuals who studied and practised medicine in times of dislocation. A list pulled together from Hill's book would include: John Pordage, Samuel Pordage, Henry Stubbe, John Webster, John Rogers, Abiezer Coppe, William Walwyn and Marchamont Nedham.1 Medicine as a practical option for a lost career, or to supplement and subsidize uncertain careers, can also be found among Royalists and Anglicans when their lives were similarly disrupted during the Interregnum. Among these were the brilliant Vaughan twins, Thomas, the Hermetic philosopher, and Henry, the metaphysical poet and clergyman; the poet, Abraham Cowley; and the mercurial Nedham, who was dislocated both as a republican and as a royalist. The Anglicans Ralph Bathurst and Mathew Robinson were forced to abandon temporarily their clerical careers for medicine, only to return to the Church when times were more propitious. In the middle of the eighteenth century the political and religious disabilities of non-juring Anglicanism were still potent enough to impel Sir Richard Jebb to a successful medical career. But by and large the greatest impact on medicine came from the much larger group of the displaced, the English Dissenters, whose combination of religion and medicine were nothing short of remarkable. -

Hermeticism in Sweden 189 Chapter 24 Hermeticism in Sweden Hermeticism in Sweden Susanna Åkerman The fragmentary sources for tracing Hermeticism in Sweden stem from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when these texts still formed a basis for cosmological thinking. The Corpus Hermeticum was often associated with another Hermetic text, the Tabula smaragdina or Emerald Tablet. Translated into Latin from the Arabic in the twelfth century, the text was particularly pop- ular among German alchemists, who rarely read the Corpus Hermeticum but instead based their understanding of Hermeticism on the short sentences from the Emerald Tablet. The Emerald Tablet was furthermore used to present alchemy in a simple but enigmatic form. The Tablet formulated the kernel of Hermeticism in a widely spread maxim on the parallels between the cosmo- logical macrocosm and the human microcosm: “As above, so below”. This figure of thought had a great influence on Hermeticism in Sweden. Swedenborg, for example, reformulated it to treat of correspondences between the natural, the spiritual, and the heavenly realms. Hermetic philosophy likewise influenced three other currents: mysticism, alchemy, and Rosicrucianism. Seventeenth-Century Metaphysics Hermeticism began to be an important current in Sweden with Johan Skytte (1577–1645), who was the Chancellor of Uppsala University. In the 1640s Skytte delivered an oration in which he praised King Gustavus II Adolphus for having opened the doors for “Theophrastus [Paracelsus] and [Hermes] Trismegistos” to the Swedish universities. This was a clear signal that the older pagan phi- losophy was compatible with Christian beliefs. In the same spirit, the Finnish natural philosopher Sigfrid Aron Forsius (1560–1624) edited several almanacs to be used for astrological purposes. -

three The Golden Age of Opportunity, 1645–1723 The friars’ opposition to ancestral cults and their promotion of women’s religious activities placed Fuan converts in a difficult social position during the 1630s and early 1640s. They encountered hostility and re- pression from both the state and the local elites. The Manchu invasion, however, turned the religious allegiance of Christian literati from a li- ability into a strength and offered them a means of gaining social stand- ing and receiving official sanction for their faith. The events of the Ming-Qing transition show the importance of historical contingency and of improvisation in the spread and establishment of Christianity in Fuan. The localization of the faith depended on long-held hopes and values that nurtured the religious longings of converts: a desire to ex- tinguish sin, hope for salvation after death, and a sense of community and personal fulfillment expressed in piety and spirituality. But fleeting events linked to historical junctures also carried great weight in creat- ing the most favorable environment for the implanting of Christian values and practices.1 The state of war and the political and military volatility between 1644 and the early 1650s were loyalty tests for local elites: Should they ————— 1. Most southern literati and officials faced this dilemma. In Fuan, a large portion of the elite remained loyal to the de- feated dynasty, represented by short-lived and fractious regimes in Zhejiang and Fujian.
