The human development of colossal numbers from one geographical area to another and their first contact with other social and economic backgrounds is a major source of change in the human state. For at least two centuries long before the great brook of the Hungry Forties, Irish immigrants had been making their way to the New World. Yet, the tragedy of the Great Famine is still seen as the greatest turning point of Irish history for the future of Ireland was forever changed. The paper tends to explore the conception of emigration and how it steadily became “a predominant way of life” in Ireland, so pervasive and integral to Irish life that it had affected the broad context of both Irish and American histories simultaneously. From the post-colonial perspective, my study presents emigration as one of the greatest emotional issues in Irish history, as it tends to have a very negative image especially in the post-Famine era. People are generally seen as involuntary “exiles”, compelled to leave Ireland by “British tyranny” and “landlord oppression” - an idealized Ireland where everyone was happy and gay and where roses grew around the door of the little white-washed cottage.

Yet two distinct voices emerge from the hubbub: those of Charles Trevelyan, a British civil servant who supervised relief operations during the Famine, and John Mitchel, an Irish nationalist who blamed London for the many Famine-related deaths.1 They may be considered as representative to some extent, albeit in an extreme form, of two dominant trends within its historiography as far as London’s role during the Famine is concerned.

    Background • Nearly half the Irish population (3 million people) depended on the potato as the main part of their diet – The potato is rich in vitamins – An adult rural laborer consumed 14 lbs. of potatoes daily • Together with buttermilk, this provided all of the protein, fats, carbohydrates, calcium, and iron necessary for health – the staple crop because on less than one acre of land, potatoes could feed a family of 10 for a year, as well as pay rent • could be grown on small plots of land • the crop could also thrive on boggy wastelands – But potatoes could not be stored for more than a year Background • between 1722 and 1879 there were no less than twenty-nine 'famines' in Ireland – Deaths from the famines of 1722, 1726, 1728 and 1738 were measured in the tens of thousands – But in 1741 half a million people died from malnutrition and related disease from the famine – famines followed in 1765, 1770, 1774 and 1783 • Again the deaths were counted in the tens of thousands – More famines followed in 1800, 1807, 1822, 1834, and 1836 Vincent Van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters (1885) Irish potato famine 1845-1849 • In the mid 1840’s a European potato blight swept across the continent into Ireland – Blight → a disease that kills plants • Caused by a fungus (phytophthora infestans) – produced “black spots and a white mold on the leaves, soon rotting the potato into a pulp” – Ireland had been hit by isolated potato failures in the early 1840s, but never a complete failure – hit Ireland in 1845 • Potato vines withered in the fields • Potatoes in

The article presented here was originally submitted to an academic human rights journal, and was sent back to me for only minor revisions after peer review. After these revisions were done, however, the editors of the journal asked me to make clearer the practical implications of my conclusions. This led to me redrafting the last section of the article, to include the numbered points on what lessons could be learned and what measures could be adopted in light of the points raised. One of these points focuses on the necessity of human rights education and training, specifically with reference to the right to freedom of expression, and necessary restrictions of that right . The editors accepted most of these points but felt that, here, I should have stressed how the songs cited can be used to demonstrate what is and what is not “hate speech”. Since I felt that this actually contradicted my argumentation as a whole, and if it was to be dealt with properly would open up a whole new can of worms, I cut the relevant point in its entirety – I was already far over the word limit, and by this stage the review and revision process had taken the best part of a year. The editors deemed this latest version almost ready for publication, but requested that I include a new paragraph in the conclusion.

It stands in the famine graveyard in Sligo. Conlon wrote this description of Faoin Sceach: This Bronze Tree stands as a symbol of dignity. The Irish potato famine played a significant role in the migration patterns from Ireland to the United States, however, much of the research has solely focused on the men in these migration patterns. The women involved in these migration patterns, long neglected and overlooked by historians, were equally important to the history of the famine and subsequent migration patterns from Ireland to the United States. The men, women, and children impacted by the Irish potato famine experienced excruciating heartache and loss, as well as extreme conditions and deprivation. Yet, through it all, those who were able to migrate to the United States contributed to the growth of the Irish population and protected Irish culture.
