INTRODUCTION & SITE DESCRIPTION 1.1 Mills Whipp Projects has been commissioned by GL Hearn to prepare a Desk Based Assessment of archaeology for the Westwood site on the eastern side of Junction 27 of the M5 (Figs.1, 2 & 17). 1.2 The site is centred on National Grid Reference ST 0510 1382 and is approximately 90 ha (222 acres) in area. It lies immediately to the east of the Sampford Peverell Junction 27 of the M5. Its northern side lies adjacent to Higher Houndaller Farmhouse while the southern end is defined by Andrew’s Plantation, the lane leading to Mountstephen Farm and Mountstephen Cottages (Fig.16).

Further details are available at www.ageofnelson.org/ Presented by the Exeter Flotilla on the occasion of the Trafalgar Day Service held on the bicentenary of the battle. INTRODUCTION TO THE DEVON TRAFALGAR ROLL On the 19th October 1805 the combined fleet of France and Spain was observed to be sailing from Cadiz. News that the enemy fleet was at sea was relayed to the Commander in Chief of the British fleet, Vice Admiral Lord Nelson, and to intercept it his fleet sailed for the Straits of Gibraltar. On the eve of battle Nelson prayed: - May the great God, whom I worship, grant my country, and for the benefit of Europe in general a great and glorious victory; and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British Fleet. For myself, individually, I commit my life to him that made me, and may his blessings alight my endeavours for serving my Country faithfully. To him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted me to defend. Amen. Amen. Amen. When the fleets met off Cape Trafalgar on the morning of the 21st the British formed two columns and, in light westerly airs, set an easterly course to close. The van was led by Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory and the rear column by Vice Admiral Lord Collingwood’s flagship HMS Royal Sovereign. The combined fleet of 33 sail of the line, commanded by Admiral Villeneuve in Bucentaure, wore round and reached back to the north.

Why Monitor? 1.4 The Council is required to produce monitoring reports to review the progress of its local plans and supplementary planning documents, and the extent to which the policies in the documents are being achieved. Organised Religion in Axminster
Organised religion in Axminster Introduction The Church of England parish of Axminster has a parish Church (the Minster Church of St Mary the Virgin) in the town centre, and a smaller affiliated Church (Holy Cross, Woodbury) just outside the town. These are both part of a ‘team ministry’ which since 1983 has included three further local churches and chapels, in All Saints, Combpyne (St Mary the Virgin) and Chardstock (St Andrew’s); and, since 2001, Membury (St John the Baptist). The town also has a Roman Catholic Church (St Mary’s); a United Reform Church; a Methodist Church; an independent Christian Fellowship evangelical congregation (Purzebrook Chapel); and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Most of these churches, together with the Baptist Church in Kilmington and the Quakers of Uplyme, belong to a grouping called ‘Axminster Churches Together’. The Minster Church of Axminster The Minster Church of Axminster has been in existence since at least AD 789, when it was identified as the burial place of Cynehard the Atheling, heir to the throne of Wessex. The physical fabric of the Church has been re-built, expanded and altered several times since then, not least as a consequence of the damage suffered by the Church when it was besieged during the Civil War, and the related destruction of the town by fire, as described on this website under the heading ‘Selected Events from the Town’s History’. Many of these physical changes are documented in James Davidson’s 1835 book ‘The History of Axminster Church in the County of Devon’. This was re-printed and re-published in 1895 by Edwin Snell of Axminster, with an additional chapter which had been written by Robert Cornish, who also assembled the index to the parish registers which can be found in the Devon Heritage Centre.

Medieval English Roodscreens, with special reference to Devon. Submitted by Michael Aufrère Williams to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, June 2008. ABSTRACT Roodscreens dividing church chancels and naves, topped with the image of Christ on the cross and often decorated with images of saints, were universal pieces of furnishing in English parish churches between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. This thesis centres on such screens in Devon, while seeking to place them in the context of their history in England as a whole. It discusses their origins, the period of their flowering in the later middle ages, and their fate at the Reformation, which swept away their lofts and iconography but kept their basic structures. While the heart of the thesis lies in the period from 1300 to 1570, consideration is also given to their subsequent fate between about 1570 and about 1870, when many disappeared due to changing fashions in church layout and furnishing. It concludes by showing how modern conservation, since 1870, has preserved most of those that remained as well as studying and restoring them. The thesis uses all the available primary and secondary sources for Devon, and major comparative ones for the rest of England.
