Does her involvement with such diverse projects as Senegalese party-animals Bu-Baca or Jackie Orszaczky's omnipotent Grandmasters hold any clues? July Sunday, 7th Sunday, 21st Bear & Missile (Adelaide) - Debut Stephen Byth Quartet (Boston/Melbourne) Bear & Missile is an Adelaide-based ensemble comprised of young talents, Returning briefly to Melbourne from his studies in Boston USA, outstanding Presenting original jazz & improvised Bernard Alexander (saxophones), Benjamin Finnis (guitar), Dylan Kuerschner young Monash graduate tenor saxophonist/composer Stephen Byth brings music in Melbourne since 1983 (bass), and Morgan Fletcher (drums). Having collaborated in various groups together his quartet to present a set of new original music that draws in Adelaide for several years, these four artists developed a simpatico musical inspiration from the music of John Coltrane, African/Cuban folk traditions, and personal relationship that resulted in this co-led ensemble. With each and the blues (as well as some swinging tunes from the jazz standard member regularly contributing original compositions, Bear & Missile’s music repertoire). This quartet will feature Kade Brown (piano), Hiroki Hoshino stems from a diverse range of musical influences and genres, from Herbie (bass) and Luke Andresen (drums). Hancock to Henry Threadgill, and Bebop to RnB. The group’s compositions explore elements of the jazz canon that feel particularly relevant to them as Sunday, 28th young people, such as soulful melodies, dancing rhythms, and high-energy Niko Schauble’s “Then This” – Premiere July/August vehicles for improvisation. Drummer/composer/bandleader Niko Schauble’s latest project brings together four exciting musicians, playing a selection of lesser-known Sunday, 14th. standards and new originals by Schauble. Their combined musical Svoboda/O’connor/Green (Brisbane/ Melbourne) backgrounds - together with the bass-less format of the ensemble - will & Laurence Pike (Sydney) – CD Launch create a setting which allows for unique and surprising twists and turns. -

Rob recognised an unfulfilled need in Melbourne's jazz academic landscape, established its course curriculum and provided a clear pathway for musicians to develop their proficiency and aptitude for their academic and performance outcomes. His background as a classically educated musician also enables him to traverse many musical genres and he is in a unique position to speak to students and colleagues about their requirements/concerns and provide balanced outcomes. His ongoing research focuses on issues relating to how we respond to improvised jazz: artistically, critically and personally. His work includes studying the processes and outcomes of music participation and music listening. An internationally acclaimed performer and composer, Rob has released 12 CD's under his own name and has composed and performed on a further 300 CD's. His sensitive and balanced perspective has allowed Rob to traverse many different styles and this has, in part, been expressed as collaborative performances with international leaders in classical, jazz and experimental music. His embrace of many genres of music and the clear expression of his diversity in his role as an educator, researcher and performer, has given rise to a vibrant dialect that resonates through his students and also his performances. -

“Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago. -
