FLINDERS QUARTET MEDIA RELEASE COMPOSER WORKSHOP – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA ENQUIRIES: Wendy Avilov [email protected] 0417 798 523 FURTHER INFORMATION: flindersquartet.com/composerworkshop FLINDERS QUARTET INAUGURAL COMPOSER WORKSHOP CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Flinders Quartet (FQ) invites applications from composers to submit a short work for string quartet to be workshopped by the members of the quartet and composition mentor, Brenton Broadstock, resulting in a professionally recorded live performance. Up to eight composers will have the chance to spend up to three hours with the quartet on their composition, in this, FQ’s inaugural composer workshop. The workshops will take place in Melbourne and will be open to the public, allowing aspiring composers to witness the creative process of other composers as well as demonstrating their own compositional development. The workshops will take place over a period of eight days towards the end of 2016, and will culminate in a public performance that will be professionally recorded. FQ is deeply committed to furthering the Australian tradition of chamber music. The quartet regularly commissions and premieres works by Australia composers, and considers the development and presentation of new works an essential part of its activity. FQ believes that in order to best serve the composers and to truly develop their compositional skills and personal voice, having a live, professional string quartet at their disposal is an invaluable tool. Supported by Creative Victoria, this inaugural workshop will involve up to eight new composers and their compositions, giving each of the participating composers a career-leveraging opportunity. Over the course of eight days, the pieces will take shape and will be crafted to best showcase the composer’s intent. -

July/August Vehicles for Improvisation
July Sunday, 7th Sunday, 21st Bear & Missile (Adelaide) - Debut Stephen Byth Quartet (Boston/Melbourne) Bear & Missile is an Adelaide-based ensemble comprised of young talents, Returning briefly to Melbourne from his studies in Boston USA, outstanding Presenting original jazz & improvised Bernard Alexander (saxophones), Benjamin Finnis (guitar), Dylan Kuerschner young Monash graduate tenor saxophonist/composer Stephen Byth brings music in Melbourne since 1983 (bass), and Morgan Fletcher (drums). Having collaborated in various groups together his quartet to present a set of new original music that draws in Adelaide for several years, these four artists developed a simpatico musical inspiration from the music of John Coltrane, African/Cuban folk traditions, and personal relationship that resulted in this co-led ensemble. With each and the blues (as well as some swinging tunes from the jazz standard member regularly contributing original compositions, Bear & Missile’s music repertoire). This quartet will feature Kade Brown (piano), Hiroki Hoshino stems from a diverse range of musical influences and genres, from Herbie (bass) and Luke Andresen (drums). Hancock to Henry Threadgill, and Bebop to RnB. The group’s compositions explore elements of the jazz canon that feel particularly relevant to them as Sunday, 28th young people, such as soulful melodies, dancing rhythms, and high-energy Niko Schauble’s “Then This” – Premiere July/August vehicles for improvisation. Drummer/composer/bandleader Niko Schauble’s latest project brings together four exciting musicians, playing a selection of lesser-known Sunday, 14th. standards and new originals by Schauble. Their combined musical Svoboda/O’connor/Green (Brisbane/ Melbourne) backgrounds - together with the bass-less format of the ensemble - will & Laurence Pike (Sydney) – CD Launch create a setting which allows for unique and surprising twists and turns. -

From 1996-1999 he was a professor at the Munich Hochschule für Musik, and still teaches numerous courses. Mortensen is also active as a conductor, exclusively of period instrument ensembles. He is the Artistic Director of both Concerto Copenhagen and the European Union Baroque Orchestra. Additionally, Mortensen works with several distinguished ensembles such as Holland Baroque, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Nederlandse Bachvereniging and Collegium 1704. Mortensen has recorded extensively for many labels including DGG-Archiv, CPO, ECM and Kontrapunkt, winning a Diapason d’Or for Bach’s Goldberg Variations. He has received multiple prizes and distinctions, among them Denmark’s most prestigious music award, the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. After gaining her Bachelor of Music from the Canberra School of Music in 1992, Jane Gower undertook post-graduate studies in Early Music at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague. -

DON BURROWS QUARTET: SHOWCASE FOR A TALENTED NEWCOMER by Eric Myers _______________________________________________________________ The Don Burrows Quartet with James Morrison The Rothbury Estate, Pokolbin Sydney Morning Herald, April 8, 1980 _______________________________________________________________ t is difficult to imagine a more pleasant afternoon than one spent on the Rothbury Estate, with the sun shining, the wine flowing, and jazz provided I by Don Burrows, George Golla and their colleagues. At this concert, Burrows (clarinet, flute and alto saxophone) and Golla (guitar) gave a roaring display of the swinging, mainstream jazz that is appealing and relaxing for so many people. In their playing, there are few signs of the atonality, chromaticism and dissonance which characterise much contemporary modern jazz, and this perhaps explains their great popularity with middle-of-the-road jazz lovers. Resident at the iconic Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra also performs in venues throughout Sydney and regional New South Wales, and international tours to Europe, Asia and the USA have earned the Orchestra worldwide recognition for artistic excellence. The Orchestra’s first chief conductor was Sir Eugene Goossens, appointed in 1947; he was followed by Nicolai Malko, Dean Dixon, Moshe Atzmon, Willem van Otterloo, Louis Frémaux, Sir Charles Mackerras, Zdenêk Mácal, Stuart Challender, Edo de Waart and Gianluigi Gelmetti. Vladimir Ashkenazy was Principal Conductor from 2009 to 2013, followed by David Robertson as Chief Conductor from 2014 to 2019. Australia-born Simone Young has been the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor Designate since 2020. She commences her role as Chief Conductor in 2022 as the Orchestra returns to the renewed Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. OBITUARY: JOHN SANGSTER 1928-1995 by Bruce Johnson _________________________________________________________ ohn Grant Sangster, musician/composer, was born 17 November 1928 in Melbourne, only child of John Sangster and Isabella (née Davidson, then J Pringle by first marriage). He attended Sandringham (1933), then Vermont Primary Schools, and Box Hill High School. Self-taught on trombone then cornet, learning from recordings with friend Sid Bridle, with whom he formed a band. Sangster on cornet: self-taught first on trombone, then cornet… PHOTO COURTESY AUSTRALIAN JAZZ MUSEUM Isabella’s hostility towards John and his jazz activities came to a head on 21 September 1946, when she withdrew permission for him to attend a jazz event; in the ensuing confrontation he killed her with an axe but was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter. In December 1946 he attended the first Australian Jazz Convention (AC) in Melbourne, December 1946, and at the third in 1948 he won an award from Graeme Bell as ‘the most promising player’. He first recorded December 30th, and participated in the traditional jazz scene, including through the community centred on the house of Alan Watson in Rockley Road, South Yarra. 1 He married Shirley Drew 18 November 1949. In 1950 recorded (drums) with Roger, then Graeme Bell, and was invited to join Graeme’s band on drums for their second international tour (26 October 1950 to 15 April 1952). During this tour Sangster recorded his first composition, and encountered Kenny Graham’s Afro-Cubists and Johnny Dankworth, which broadened his stylistic interests. Graeme Bell invited Sangster to join Graeme’s band on drums for their second international tour, October 1950 to April 1952.. -
