Down the phone-line, the question comes out of nowhere about as completely as the world itself must have once done. I H pause. Is this a joke? "We were just talking about it," explains Cathy. I tell her I'll illuminate her when we meet for the interview. I wonder whether the bebop pianist I had heard with Craig Scott's dream band, Improviso, is more likely to be a Christian Fundamentalist, a Big Bang Theorist, or an Existentialist. Does her involvement with such diverse projects as Senegalese party-animals Bu-Baca or Jackie Orszaczky's omnipotent Grandmasters hold any clues? For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] "A Band on Every Corner": Using Historical GIS to Describe Changes in the Sydney and Melbourne Live Music Scenes Abstract This paper demonstrates the use of historical Geographic Information Systems (historical GIS) to investigate live music in Sydney and Melbourne. It describes the creation of a tailored historical geodatabase built from samples of gig listings (comprising dates, locations, and performer names), and how this historical geodatabase offers insight into the changing dynamics of performers and venue locations. The major findings from the analyses using the developed historical geodatabase are that neither city showed a decline in live music performance or performer numbers, but Melbourne increased at a greater rate than Sydney. -

THAT AIN’T BAD A ZINE DEDICATED TO SYDNEY INDIE POP FROM THE EARLY 90’S BY ANDY PAINE INTROduction In the late 1980's and early 1990's, a group of bands emerged from Sydney who all played fuzzy distorted guitars juxtaposed with poppy melodies and harmonies. They released some wonderful music, had a brief period of remarkable mainstream success, and then faded from the memory of Australia's 'alternative' music world. I was too young to catch any of this music the first time around – by the time I heard any of these bands the 90’s were well and truly over. It's hard to say how I first heard or heard about the bands in this zine. As a teenage music nerd I devoured the history of music like a mechanical harvester ploughing through a field of vegetables - rarely pausing to stop and think, somethings were discarded, some kept with you. I discovered music in a haphazard way, not helped by living in a country town where there were few others who shared my passion for obscure bands and scenes. The internet was an incredible resource, but it was different back then too. There was no wikipedia, no youtube, no streaming, and slow dial-up speeds. Besides the net, the main ways my teenage self had access to alternative music was triple j and Saturday nights spent staying up watching guest programmers on rage. It was probably a mixture of all these that led to me discovering what I am, for the purposes of this zine, lumping together as "early 90's Sydney indie pop". -

He has worked on some of Australia’s better known productions and movies, making video and film images for some of Australia’s better known TV programs, TVCs, corporate productions and music clips. Along the way, Andrew has developed Vital Image, a production company which has acquired top-range video cameras, steadicams and other film/video making equipment - and has developed a wealth of good contacts with the best people in the film, video and communications industries. Recently: 2006 - Vital Image provided 2 Steadicams to Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. Vital Image also purchased the HD Cinealta 900R to compliment our SD Digi-Betacam camera and hire kit. 2000 - Purchased a Rig Engineering’s Steadicam (equipment modified by the Hugo Langer) for Australian market to compliment Vital Image’s existing SK 2 Steadicam film/ video rig. 1990 - Current - Vital Image supplies camera operators, assistants and sound recordist services. At this time Andrew is also actively involved in local, interstate and overseas production of commercials, rock videos, as well as educational, training and children’s television productions. Vital Image now also acts as location producers for interstate crews working in South Australia, providing both working personnel and equipment for Outside Broadcasts and Multi Unit EFP crews. 1991 - Worked in Kuala Lumpur as an editor/camera consultant, post producing 35mm film and television commercials, as well as local Malay and Chinese dramas. 1990 - For Vital Image, worked as a freelance camera operator and sound recordist. -

ESTIMATES COMMITTEE PROCEEDINGS – 18 September 2002 CHIEF MINISTER In Committee in Continuation: Mr CHAIRMAN: Ladies and gentlemen, colleagues, it being 9 am, I propose that we continue this Estimates Committee. I reflected overnight, as I suppose most people have, about our progress. I will not go into that again. It is, in a way, a little like a cricket match. We really have to cooperate with one another to try to get through the two innings. A member: Is it a test match or a one day? Mr CHAIRMAN: No, this is a test match. We have a … Ms Martin: We could have penalties. Mr CHAIRMAN: Well, that is right. A member: We need five days then. Mr CHAIRMAN: Maybe. No, this is the Sheffield Shield. I would exhort everybody involved to try to get through our business as speedily as possible. We were aiming to have three ministers today. We are about half way through the Chief Minister and we still have the member for Nhulunbuy to go. By my estimation makes four-and-a-half. So let us go to it. The first business overhanging from last night was in relation to Output 03.10, which was the NT Railway. It has been confirmed to me that that will be dealt with by Minister Henderson. That leads us onto Output 04.10 which is Support to Executive, Ministers and Leader of the Opposition. Once again, the member for Brennan has asked most of the questions here and I put it in his hands. Available here This Journal Article is posted at Research Online. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/ecuworkspost2013/2163 Nothing Happens Here: Songs About Perth Jon Stratton Adam Trainer Abstract This essay examines Perth as portrayed through the lyrics of popular songs written by people who grew up in the city. These lyrics tend to reproduce the dominant myths about the city, that it is isolated, that it is self-satisfied, that little happens there. Perth became the focus of song lyrics during the late 1970s time of punk with titles such as ‘Arsehole Of The Universe’ and ‘Perth Is A Culture Shock.’ Even the Eurogliders’ 1984 hit, ‘Heaven Must Be There,’ is based on a rejection of life in Perth. However, Perth was also home to Dave Warner whose songs in the 1970s and early 1980s offered vignettes, which is itself a title of one of Warner’s tracks, of the youthful, male suburban experience.
