Welcome to Durham and congratulations on getting accepted into this world- leading university! I’m Sofia, your international Welfare Rep, and I’m here to ensure that all of you have an amazing Fresher’s Week, and that you kick off your first year in the best way possible, making you fall in love with Durham in the process. Here are a few facts about me: I’m a cheery half Italian and half Argentinian human who enjoys bad puns way too much. I’m a second year Liberal Arts student, majoring in English Lit, and I seem to have a knack for getting involved in too many extracurricular activities, such as rowing, football, Frisbee (yes, it’s an actual sport), Aidan’s voices and International Society (“come for the cake and stay for the culturally diverse people” – sounds like a great motto to me). Sports and societies are honestly so much fun and I can’t stress enough how important it is to join as many as you fancy! This Handbook will provide you with some of the key information about Durham and Aidan’s, but do not hesitate to reach out to me, the Welfare team or any other Frep if you have any questions or concerns, we’ll all be more than happy to give you the support you need! And now I’ll let Lik Qi and Hanna introduce themselves as the last two members of the International Rep team (aka the dream team). Can’t wait to meet all of you in September and I hope you have an amazing summer!! xx Hello! I’m Lik Qi, a third-year Psychology student and I will be one of your International Freps. I come from Singapore and I’ve been studying in the UK since 2015. Thus, having experienced the typical homesickness, fitting in, adapting to a new country and environment – feel free to come to me for any help and I’ll do my best to help you. Durham is a lovely place and I guarantee you’ll fall in love with it very very soon! Some may experience culture shock during Freshers Week, just like I did, but keep getting involved and I’m sure you’ll have an amazing experience to begin your university life with! To add on to your college experience, I definitely recommend joining sports and societies like the international Society – where international and local students come together to forge a stronger home in Aidan’s (It’s amazing, I promise!!) Also, if you’ve any burning questions about formals committee, Aidan’s Voices, DU Choral Society, I’ll be more than willing to answer them! Can’t wait to meet all of you during Fresher’s Week!! Xx Hey Aidanites!! I’m Hanna, I’m a second-year studying Economics and Politics and a member of the amazing international frep team! I am super excited to meet you all and as an international frep, I intend to make sure that you fall in love with Aidan’s and Durham as quickly as I did! I am convinced you will absolutely love this tiny but wonderful city (yes, we have a cathedral so Durham is technically a city), but I know that moving to a new country is a huge change. But luckily coming to Durham from Budapest, I have already experienced it myself, so if you feel a bit overwhelmed or homesick, have any problems or questions, or just want to have a chat, please don’t hesitate to come talk to me! I give pretty good advice (I think) and I talk loads so you can probably get away with nodding at the right places and we will still have a really nice chat! Everyone is different, but for me keeping myself super busy was what helped me get used to living in a new country quite quickly. I joined loads of societies, such as United Nations Society and Amnesty International Society, wrote for the university newspaper, the Palatinate and even tried out Thai boxing with a friend once (which was a lot of fun but it’s definitely not my sport). So, I really encourage you to make the most of the opportunities Durham and Aidan’s has to offer, and I am sure you will have a wonderful three (or more) years here! Can’t wait to meet and get to know all of you! Xx 3 WHAT IS A COLLEGE? To me, one of the things that makes Durham so special is its collegiate system, in which case you might be wondering what makes college so different from any ordinary accommodation. Well, here’s a few reasons why: • Every college has its own spirit, traditions, lifestyle and community (kind of like the different Houses in Harry Potter – minus the wizards, obviously, though Durham is pretty ~magical~) • Every College has both a Junior Common Room and a Senior Common Room (which are explained in detail further down) • Students are crucial actors in shaping the college and contributing to the way it is ran: you can get involved in the JCR by joining sports and societies, and have a say in JCR meetings or in the committees that you have gotten involved in. • College has also got a great support system: o A Welfare Committee that provides daily contact hours and amazing officers that will be more than happy to have a chat about anything o A College Mentoring System that you can sign up to where a postgraduate or a person that is part of the professional world can help you settle in and build your CV. o A system of College Families: you will get assigned College Parents that study similar subjects to you and are here to guide you, whether it is academically or personally! ST AIDAN’S COLLEGE St Aidan’s College (aka the King of the Hill) prides itself to be an open-minded and welcoming college, providing its community with a friendly and accepting environment where everyone can thrive! Now a few of facts about the college: • We are a mid-sized college, usually welcoming around 270 undergraduate Fresher’s and 250 postgraduates every year. • We have a team of 38 Freps to make sure that both International Fresher’s week and Fresher’s week run smoothly • Our Principal, Dr. Susan Frenk, our Vice Principal, Mr. Stefan Klidzia, and the rest of the team can liaise with your department in case of any academic difficulties. • We have a 24/7 Porter Service which is here to ensure our security. The porters are so important as they are also here to give you a hand if you ever need help. 4 ACCOMMODATION • Fresher’s are allocated either single or shared rooms (don’t forget to fill out your room questionnaire!) and those rooms could be in different parts of college: the straights, the curves, and the houses (D-G). The Fresher’s share bathrooms and some kitchen spaces. • Most Postgraduates live in the Elizabeth Pease House but some live in the New Houses, with some of the returning students that want to live in College for their last year JCR AND SCR • These acronyms stand respectively for Junior Common Room (undergraduates) and Senior Common Room (postgraduates), so the one that concerns you mostly is the Junior version. • The JCR is the main communal area in college, great to socialise or have a snack from the Shop (usually both go hand in hand) • The Junior Common Room is also the organization that regiments all sports, societies and social activities within College. • There are 8 JCR meetings in which the “Exec” will talk you through the decisions which are being taken with the JCR money, and the positions which you can run for. To get involved in one of our committees (such as the Shop Comm, Social Comm or Welfare) you have to either: o “Hust” (stand up in front of the JCR members and explain why you think you’d be a good candidate for the position and then answer some questions) OR o Be interviewed by the members of said committee • Why get involved in the JCR? o Meet lots of different people that are passionate about the same things that you are, people whom you may not have met because they don’t do your course o Have a strong influence in shaping college life and even the university o Try new things – it’s so easy to get involved and you might try something you that you might love: I, for instance, knew nothing about Frisbee before I came to uni and I’m so glad I got involved! 5 FACILITIES • The Dining Hall o Meals are served in in the Dining Hall three times a day – you’ll get more info about meal times in your Fresher package • Bailey Room and Shincliffe Room o During induction week, there will be events running in both rooms: your registration, signing up for your health insurance but also entertainment during formals. o Throughout the year, you will have workshops running, the Creative Writing course or even movie nights o During exam season, the Bailey and the Shincliffe room are used as extra stuDYING spaces • Lindisfarne Centre o There are regular talks, workshops and other events there, many of which are open to students both from St.

The year before I had listened with excitement to the launch of our local commercial station, Liverpool's Radio City, and wanted to find out what other stations I might be able to pick up. In those days the Guide covered TV as well as radio, which could only manage to fill two pages – but then there were only 19 “ILR” stations.

Collectively, this thesis utilises a mixed methods design in order to comprehend the meanings and values that athletes have upon rest. The initial study utilised a grounded theory approach to explore athletes’ specific experiences of rest along with their personal perceptions of “what rest means to them”.

THE MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF DURHAM UNIVERSITY 2018 ISSUE 04 ISSUE 04 2018 DUNELM MAGAZINE 3 Dear alumni of Durham Durham, as it always has, is continuing to develop. Major advances have been made on the plans laid out in the University Strategy, 2017-2027. As you will see in your magazine, we have begun work on a new Centre for Teaching and Learning near St Mary’s and we now have planning permission for our 17th college, the first in ten years, which will be built near Van Mildert on South Road. The developments at Maiden Castle and in Computer Science are also moving forward quickly. You can see the artists’ drawings of some of these projects over the next few pages. In order to prepare the way for the transition of colleges and departments into Durham from Queen’s Campus Stockton, Ustinov College has now moved into a first-class new home at Sheraton Park (the old Neville’s Cross college site), and John Snow and Stephenson Colleges have established bases in Durham City in preparation for their move into Durham over the summer. Meanwhile in Queen’s, our new International Study Centre (ISC) has enjoyed a successful first term, and we are looking forward to a large number of ISC students joining Durham University degree courses next year. All of this work is designed not only to keep Durham at the pinnacle of UK education but also to expand our global reputation and reach; and so I am also pleased to let you know that we have a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Claire O’Malley, who will lead on globalizing Durham.
