WELCOME TO TREVS

Congratulations! Well done on getting into Durham and we hope you are counting down the days until it all begins! It is an absolute privilege to welcome you to Trevelyan College and to as a whole. I am Mudit, your Senior Freshers’ Representative (Frep) and my team will help run an immense Freshers’ Week alongside our fantastic team of Freps.

This is a Freshers’ Handbook to breakdown all the questions and queries that you may have before coming to university but don’t hesitate to ask more questions when you arrive in September! We would strongly recommend reading it all before you arrive and bringing it with you! Please make sure you read the checklist at the end of this booklet to make sure you bring everything you need to maximise your experience!

See you soon!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TREVELYAN COLLEGE

Trevelyan College was founded in 1966. Originally an all‐female College in response to rising demands for residential places for women in Durham, men first graced its corridors in 1992 and now, in 2021, the College is completely mixed. It was quickly recognised that Trevs’ small size allowed everyone to get to know virtually everyone; as a result, we pride ourselves on being known as the friendliest College in Durham!

There have been several extensions to the original building; the Sir James Knott Hall in 1976, followed by the addition of 50 en-suite rooms (K Block) in 1991, while a court was added in 1999. Trevs now plays home to around 1,000 students, about 30% of whom live in. The College was named after Dr. George Macaulay Trevelyan, famous historian, and Chancellor of the University from 1950 to 1957. We still maintain strong links with the Trevelyan family and hope to strengthen these links further in the coming years by increasing our involvement with the Trevelyan family’s Wallington estate, a National Trust site set in extensive beautiful parkland close to Durham.

Trevs’ unique hexagonal design has become a defining feature of the College. It certainly makes a change from home to have a room with more than four walls and it can be interesting trying to get from A to B, but we love it; it reflects yet another endearing characteristic of the College. The design by architect John Eastwick-Field won the building the Civic Trust Award for “making an outstanding contribution to the surrounding scene”. It is intended to reflect the form of the castle in the modern idiom. They say, “a man’s castle is his home”… and Trevs is certainly a place you can call home!

JCR DUES

JCR stands for “Junior Common Room” and is the community of undergraduate students within Trevs. Though it is separate from the college, the JCR works closely with them to add to all elements of the student experience. The JCR will impact your time here at Trevs greatly and being a member will greatly enhance the opportunities available to you and therefore your university experience! In short, the JCR is what makes Trevs more than just student halls. The JCR provides services such as:

• Organising formal dinners in which all of College • Providing welfare support to Trevs students. can come together to enjoy a great meal and often a night in the bar afterwards! • The Buttery (our very own fantastically stocked corner shop!) • Looking after all the College equipment such as the gym, game-consoles, and pool table. • Enabling the running of societies such as sports clubs and musical groups. • Running social events throughout the year.

Like most things in life, running these services requires some funds. All College JCR’s therefore charge a ‘JCR due’. In Trevs, this due is £130, and is paid once at the beginning of your time here to cover your whole time at Trevelyan (regardless of whether you are on a 3- or 4-year course). Within this Freshers Pack, you will find details of how to opt into the JCR dues, which will significantly improve the amount you can get out of College. Crucially, if you do not pay JCR Dues, you will not be able to: • Apply to work in the Buttery. • Join Trevelyan College societies and sports clubs.

• Attend JCR meetings which allow you to voice • Run for positions within the JCR (such as the your opinions on how the JCR operates and wider Treasurer or Publicity Officer). university issues. • Receive the JCR member discount on gym • Use the JCR sport equipment or rent out JCR membership (non-members pay £160 per year, camp beds. whilst members pay £30).

• Apply for JCR funding to help cover costs of • Participate in JCR elections that decide your university life. elected officers.

• Have priority access to JCR events such as • Attend JCR formal dinners. Summer Ball and Trevs Night If you opt into the JCR, then the bill for £130 will be charged. You will have received details of how to opt into the JCR Dues and other optional charges in the Freshers Pack. If you have any questions about JCR dues, please contact Emma (JCR Treasurer) at [email protected] or Alannah (JCR President) at [email protected].

We appreciate that £130, on top of all other necessary expenditures, at the start of your university experience may be a hefty financial burden. We are keen to ensure that financial pressures do not prevent incoming undergraduates from enjoying all the wonderful services on offer in the JCR. As such, should you anticipate that you will be unable to pay the full levy amount upon your arrival to Durham or have any related worries, please contact either Emma or Alannah. 5

COMMITTEES

Committees are a way for you to get involved in shaping the student experience here at Trevs. They are there to help relay the thoughts and feelings of the undergraduates to the exec so that changes can be made to the JCR that will best accommodate everyone! The most important thing, however, is that anyone can apply to be on a committee, and they are the most effective way to bring about change and get involved! There are so many committees and some involve being democratically elected, others involve writing an application to the committee chair. Each JCR level committee has elections ran in Michaelmas Term (First Term) and this is the soonest available opportunity for 1st Year students to get involved within the JCR. The Chair (Seth Weisz) will keep you informed of when the elections open.

Just as the JCR is a subsection of the College, the committees are split into two subsections:

1. JCR LEVEL COMMITTEES

JCR level committees are packed with undergrads from Trevs who shape and inform the student experience this could be you right away in First Term!

JCR COMMITTEE

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Trevs is fortunate enough to be home to students from all over the world. From Australia to Canada, to Thailand and Ecuador, to Norway and China, international students make the Trevelyan College community a diverse and charming place. Hence, in an attempt to appreciate all that the international community at Trevs has to offer, we run a series of events throughout the year celebrating themed cultural events such as: Diwali, Day of the Dead, Lunar New Year and Eurovision. The international community in Trevs helps the rich tapestry of the College to stand out and it also provides every member with the opportunity to share as much of their culture as they can. We want Trevs to be your home away from home.

OUTREACH PROJECT

The Outreach Project aims to connect Durham students with the wider local community. It’s a great opportunity to get involved with student volunteering, work with local organisations as well as a fantastic way to meet many new and amazing people, in and out of Trevs.

Whether you’re interested in music, sports or teaching, the Outreach Project can help you further important skills such as leadership and organisation, whether through leading a project with a local Durham school, or just participating and building upon your volunteering experience. It is also an opportunity to bring your own ideas into reality.

Alongside, participating in the Outreach Project opens many doors into wider university life, such as closer involvement with SCA (Student Community Action), a student-led, community-focused organisation which responds to the needs of the local community, and to offer unique volunteer opportunities to Durham students. With 1000 student volunteers, there is a whole host of things to get involved in whether you want to work with children, adults or animals! SCA runs residential trips with children referred through social services, does dog walking for local residents, computer classes for the elderly, works with local schools, prisons and care homes and much, much more! Visit our website at www.scadurham.org.uk, or visit the Experience Durham Office in the Palatine Centre to get involved!

These are always some of the best nights Trevs has to offer with students from all the years coming back to College to enjoy themselves. Make sure to keep an eye on Facebook for the events!

A themed charity event taking place in late November as one of the best events in the Trevs calendar. An auditioned jazz orchestra accompanied by vocalists composed of some of the best musicians in Trevs. Combined with a cocktail bar formed just for Live On The Hill and all in black tie makes it an event not to be missed. Look for signup for audition slots during the freshers week societies fair!

MUSICIAN’S DINNER

Musicians Dinner is a celebration of all the fantastic work our musical societies, and their members, do! It's a fantastic evening in Epiphany with a black tie meal, mealtime entertainment and awards for various musicians and societies that you get to vote for. It's a wonderful opportunity to socialise with other musicians and celebrate each other's achievements!

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

There’s the chance to perform at many other events through the year in Trevs, at other Colleges and university music! For experienced or budding DJs then there s many bar nights to fill with music organised through DJ Soc. There s Tech Comm, who are the heroes of the music scene in Trevs as they enable it all to take place! For those who are looking to just enjoy music rather than take part in it Jam Soc will be keeping you up to date with gigs in the area and socials out to them on top of helping musicians come together.

MUSIC SOCIETIES

TREVELYAN COLLEGE MUSICAL SOCIETY (TCMS)

TCMS is among the largest of the College societies and is one of the biggest events to look forward to in the Trevs calendar! There are two shows a year: our large- scale main show auditions in October and rehearses until our performances in February, while our summer musical is completely put together over a two week period in June.

TCMS prides itself on competing with the university-wide theatre societies, an amazing feat given that the talent pool is entirely Trevs Students. The society strives to put on shows with a wide range of parts for everyone and requires no past experience at acting, singing or dancing: past casts have included complete beginners to musical theatre as well as seasoned musical veterans!

However, the opportunity to get involved with TCMS doesn’t stop with performing on stage. We warmly welcome musicians to be a part of our stellar band: look out for auditions later in first term! Also, the shows would not be possible without our dedicated technical team and we warmly welcome anyone with an interest in stage management, sound and lighting to get involved too.

The Trevs musical is truly incredible and is often the highlight of the year for those involved and the Durham students and community who are in the audience. Find us at the Freshers Fair and be sure to not miss out!

THE MANGLERS (JAZZ)

The Manglers are Trevelyan’s house jazz band and perform in College and out, performing at Hild Bede’s Summer Ball, John Snow’s Annual Dinner and a tour to Dublin to name a few. While non-auditioned, we play at a high level in a variety of styles from jazz standards to funk. Our particular trademark is creating a fun atmosphere through various (not entirely serious) dance moves and audience participation (although there’s no pressure if that doesn’t sound like your thing!). While we encourage solos and provide a relaxed atmosphere to develop improvisation skills, we are also a friendly and inclusive band that caters for all.

President: [email protected]

ORCHESTRA AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (TCOS)

Trevelyan College Orchestral Society provides orchestral musicians of all abilities in the College an opportunity to play a wide and varied repertoire of classical and contemporary music with other members of the College. We consist of Trevelyan College Orchestra, an informal, fun and non-auditioned orchestra open to members of all abilities and Trevelyan College Chamber Orchestra, an auditioned ensemble that aims to perform music to the highest standard possible. Both orchestras play several concerts throughout the year. This year we are launching an “Ensembles and Concertos Scheme” which encourages members to perform as soloists and as small ensembles. We’re always looking for new members!

President: [email protected]

CHAMBER CHOIR

Chamber Choir is an auditioned choir of roughly sixteen singers. We rehearse weekly and sing a wide and challenging variety of music from the 15th-21st centuries. We sang at a number of venues last year, including Ripon Cathedral, and also at College events such as Trevstock and Christmas Formal. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch and keep an eye out for audition slots in Freshers ’week!

FLUTE CHOIR

Trevelyan College Flute Choir is a group of enthusiastic flautists who meet once a week for a relaxed rehearsal. We are a non-auditioned society and play a wide variety of music, some of which is arranged by members of Flute Choir. Recent pieces have included an arrangement of ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Bare Necessities ’ and Bach’s ‘Little Fugue in G-minor’. The choir has expanded its repertoire and sound, particularly with the addition of an alto flute. Our main objective is to ensure members continue to play the flute in a friendly and fun environment.

President: [email protected]

ACAPELLA

A Capella is a non-auditioned singing group that welcomes people of all abilities; whether you’ve never sung before, or you sing all the time. We have weekly rehearsals which are relaxed and fun. We mostly sing SATB arrangements of songs and we attempt to perform at least twice a term, whether in concerts, unplugged or carolling at Christmas for charity.

President: [email protected]

TREVLE CLEFS

Did you know singing in a choir releases the same number of endorphins as eating an entire bar of chocolate? Thankfully, Trevle Clefs Choir contains fewer calories than chocolate. As an un-auditioned choir, Trevle Clefs is for anyone and everyone who loves to sing in a group. Trevle Clefs is a place for singers of all abilities to have a little fun, with a variety of vocal music from show tunes to classical to pop, and for those of you with piano skills, there's also plenty of opportunity to show off your talents accompanying! So whether you're a professional opera singer or only ever sing in the shower, TCTC provides a relaxed, welcoming environment for everyone!

SPORT

SPORT REPRESENTATIVE – BEN DAWSON [email protected]

Sport is a great way to spend your time doing something you love, meet new people and get involved in College! Trevelyan College prides itself on its vibrant sporting community with over 25 teams competing in over 15 different sports, ensuring that a wide variety of interests are represented. All our teams warmly welcome novices, experienced players and anything in between and provide fun both on and off the pitch. The best piece of advice I can give is to try out anything that could even remotely interest you!

SOCIETIES

Trevs offers around 20 different sports, such as football, rugby, rowing, pool, ultimate frisbee and many more! All clubs warmly welcome players of any ability. Regular training enables our teams to be successful and challenges players to improve their sporting ability, while socials provide opportunities for them to make friends in all year groups and bond over a common love for sport. Meet the captains and me at the Sports Fair in Freshers ’eek to get a taste of what Trevs has to offer, and come along to some taster sessions! And if there is something we don’t offer, let me know and I can help you set up a new society!

COLLEGE LEAGUES

Trevs is home to many teams that play in Durham's highly competitive College leagues. Training and matches usually take place in the evening and at weekends at Maiden Castle, which has recently undergone a £32 million development. Wednesday afternoons are dedicated to University Sport. Team Durham offers all College sports at an elite level, as well as more niche activities that you can read about on the Team Durham website. College sport is less serious than Uni sport and competing in the College leagues as part of a Trevs team is a great way to spend a couple of hours at the weekend and meet other people with similar interests, whilst giving you something to do before College brunch!

26

VARSITIES

Trevelyan College hosts an annual Varsity against St Mary’s College, where both Colleges go head to head and compete for the Varsity trophy. Tough competition, exciting games and keen supporters make the day what it is. Mary’s won this year but next year we’ll have it! Apart from the Trevs vs. Mary’s Varsity, there is also the Loughborough and York Varsity. The former takes place in Durham in early February and is open to nine College sports, with Durham College teams taking on Loughborough. The latter is a much bigger event that takes place in York two weeks later, with more sports available and buses going back and forth all day. Varsities are true highlights of the sporting calendar, bringing together players and supporters in a showcase of sporting prowess.

FESTIVAL OF SPORT

Festival of Sport is a day filled with all College sports, with all College teams across the university competing against one another. It takes place after exam season and is the perfect way to relax and get back into a healthy sporting routine after exam stress. Similar to the Varsities, this is an event that is open to players as well as keen supporters. Exciting and competitive matches aren t the only attraction of the day; we also have food trucks offering tasty snacks and drinks to keep you going.

SPORTS DINNER

Sports Dinner is a popular Black Tie event celebrating Trevs achievements of the season. This year, our Men’s Football A team, Squash, , Women’s Hockey and Mixed Lacrosse were promoted to the premiership, A and B won all their games and our Cheerleading Squad won the Intercollegiate Cheerleading Competition. Furthermore, awards were presented to outstanding players, teams and clubs, and a Sports Personality of the Year was crowned. To round off the evening, all of College was invited to a Bar Night to join the celebrations of an amazing sporting season.

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

There is a lot more going on throughout the year, such as charity events like games and social competitions and casual , Netball or Football tournaments. Additionally, there are Refreshers ’Fairs to remind you of all the sports you could be missing out on, and open training sessions throughout the year. Depending on the club and team, College sport can be fun and relaxed or more competitive, and wherever you are on the sporting spectrum, you're bound to find something at Trevs you'll love!

THE BAR

I am proud to say that Trevs Bar is one of the best stocked and best run bars in Durham, mainly because our staff and patrons are genuinely invested in it. This short section will take you through the bar’s stock and its important role within college life, so you can really make the most of it throughout your time at Trevs. Many people are surprised when they see the extent of the range of products on offer. We have a huge range of spirits, from craft gins and rums, to flavoured vodkas and shots - and our beloved ‘miscellaneous shelf’ is home to pretty much every liqueur you can think of! Alongside our standard range, we offer a special gin, rum and vodka of the week, which change on a regular basis so that there will always be something new to try. Last year we were featured in a article that praised our extensive range of whiskies and following the launch of our comprehensive cocktail and mocktail menu, we are always looking for new ways to expand our service. On draught we have three lagers and a craft lager as standard, a rotating cask ale tap, two cider taps and two rotating craft cider taps, not forgetting the old faithful Guinness, without which no bar would be complete. Trevs Bar also has two well-loved fridges, dedicated exclusively to beer and cider respectively. Our beer fridge is stocked with a huge variety ranging from craft lagers and IPAs to wheat beers, porters and stouts, from small artisan breweries to more well-known brands like Beavertown and Brewdog. Similarly, the cider fridge hosts popular fruity and apple ciders, as well as craft cider specials. We have another fridge dedicated to wine, which is a popular choice for many on a Formal night. We have a surprisingly big range of wines for a college bar, stocking more premium and sparkling wines (even Champagne!) and bottles that come in half and single-serve sizes if you're not wanting to buy a whole bottle. In addition to our alcoholic products, we also offer a wide selection of non-alcoholic drinks. You’ll find all your classic softies, as well as some more interesting artisan varieties. We are also one of the few college bars to stock alcohol-free beer and not one, but two varieties of Seedlip non-alcoholic spirit. However, if there is a product you would like to see behind the bar, just ask for it and I’ll do my best to get it in! Some of the products that we currently sell were bought in specially after a customer request, and we’re always looking for ways to make our stock more interesting. Moreover, because the bar runs as a service to college, we can keep our prices low. Draught products start from £2.30 and spirits from £1.60, and our premium products are only marginally more expensive, meaning that

39

students can taste different products and learn what they like, without breaking the bank. One of the biggest things we try to push each year is promotion of our amazing stock, so that students are encouraged to buy better quality drinks rather than just what is cheapest. As well as opening in the evening, we also run a coffee bar, that serves freshly made barista-style coffee at a fraction of the price of most university cafes and local coffee shops. Alongside coffees, we offer a huge variety of flavoured and standard teas, smoothies, and cakes as a little pick me up during the day. The coffee bar also acts as a great study space, offering a more chilled alternative to the library. Furthermore, the bar is used extensively for college events of all sizes and is a well-loved spatial hub within Trevs. After a Formal, the bar area is transformed into a dance floor, and is also the venue for Trevs’ famous open mic nights about three times per term. At the end of the week, the bar hosts its weekly Sunday Night Quiz with chances to win prizes and a rollover cash jackpot, and there are also various charity cocktail nights that happen throughout the year. On a smaller scale, the bar is a great place to hold a society social and has been the start and finishing line of many bar crawls over the years. Although the bar will quickly become a staple of college life for many, we are aware that this will be the first time that a lot of students will experience alcohol so freely and conveniently, and for some it will be the first time they experience alcohol at all. The bar is dedicated to being a safe space for everyone, so those who drink and those who do not can enjoy it equally. We have an Alcohol Awareness Officer who works closely with the Trevs Welfare team to promote safe, responsible drinking in college and all of our staff are fully trained to ensure the bar is enjoyed but not abused. One thing that makes Trevs Bar, and all the college bars special when compared to bars in general, is that it is run entirely by students for the benefit of students. Everyone that you see working behind the bar is a Trevs student and I myself am a Trevs graduate who loved the bar so much I decided to stay another year to manage it full time. We take on a new cohort of Junior Servers every November, so if you’re interested in working for the bar, I would encourage you to chat to the current staff and spend some time in the bar to get a feel for the place. Regarding the current Covid 19 situation, the safety of our staff and customers is our priority. We are working closely alongside the University to enforce the appropriate measures are in place, in response to the Government’s guidelines. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me an email at [email protected] or come and find me in and around the bar itself, if it is safe to do so. I hope you have a great Freshers and look forward to seeing you all in the bar soon!

Not every College in Durham has a shop, let alone a toastie bar, so we are incredibly fortunate to have such a well-stocked amenity right on our doorstep in Trevs!

Our products are wide-ranging and change all the time to suit your needs and suggestions. We stock an enormous selection of edible goods; such as confectionary, snacks and more substantial ready meals, as well as a constantly evolving selection of essentials, such as toiletries, paracetamol and stamps. We also stock a huge range of soft drinks, and our freezer is stuffed with ice creams in the summer months. We are always trying to improve our stock by responding to requests, introducing healthier snacks, and widening our product range. Last year, we introduced an ‘Eco-Buttery’ scheme which aims to stock products with sustainable palm oil products. As we are run for students’ benefit, we are able to offer products at an incredibly reasonable cost, often lower than in the rest of Durham. As a special treat on the weekends, the Buttery is also home to its own waffle machine! After popular demand, students can choose from a range of deliciously sweet toppings onto a, frankly, offensively large waffle base!

Our toastie bar is open daily, and our menu is, quite frankly, extensive! Choose from white or brown bread (or upgrade to a toasted wrap), and top with anything from our wide selection of spreads and sauces, meats and vegetables, and of course, four different cheeses to choose from, to glue it all together. You can even try out a sweet toastie, oozing with chocolate! Our toastie bar manager works hard to keep things interesting, and you will often see new ingredients and toastie deals on our specials ’board. All toastie customers are entitled to a loyalty card, which gives you offers such as a free toastie once fully stamped. Look out for deals throughout the year, particularly in Freshers ’week. Making a great toastie is all about creativity – the more experimental the better! If you can come up with something bizarre, you might even end up on our Toastie Wall of Fame!

The Buttery also owns a huge range of DVDs, from film classics, to new releases and TV series. Additionally, we have a collection of board games, which span from Risk, to Poker. Any member of college is entitled to borrow a DVD or board game from us: simply speak to the member of staff behind the till who will arrange this for you. Donations for

borrowing from the collection are welcome, and the money which you donate is put back in to buying more DVDs and games. Chat to our Media Officer if you want to recommend any new releases or classic games that we are missing.

The Buttery also offers its services catering at JCR events with its candy-floss machine and popcorn machine. Our most recent addition to this collection is a Slushie Machine which has been hugely popular at events like Trevs Day and Summer Ball! We have also expanded this service to rent out at different College events like Hild Bede Ball and the infamous June Ball. Look out for us at College events throughout the year!

Feedback is essential to our business model, because the Buttery is a service for students. Let us know any ways we can improve – speak to the committee and we will be happy to listen! Social media is another great way to get in touch, so please like us on Facebook and follow our Instagram to get our latest news and updates. Feel free to contact one of the Buttery Committee directly, whose faces and contact details are on the Buttery door. The Buttery can only evolve with your feedback, so make sure that you have your say!

Working at the Buttery is arguably the most friendly and flexible student job in Durham. We will be hiring staff in Michaelmas term, shortly after Freshers ’week. Information will be sent out by email, so if you think that your skills would be an asset to the Buttery, then fill in an application form, explaining why. Come and meet us at the Freshers ’fair in College to find out more and to ask any questions that you might have about what working in the Buttery entails.

COLLEGE FACILITIES

MAIN BUILDING

The Undercroft A communal lounge - there are large sofas and a TV, making it a great place to sit and relax, as well as a free table football table! The morning papers are also delivered here.

The Lower JCR By the Dining Hall and Buttery, it has a Pool Table which costs 20p to use. It also has a vending machine for soft drinks when the bar and Buttery are shut.

The Upper JCR Upstairs from the Lower JCR, imaginatively named and very recently refurbished. In it are more sofas along with a fridge, some cooking equipment, lockers and a PS4. This is primarily designed towards livers out with lockers for storage of personal possessions during formals.

JAMES KNOTT HALL (JKH)

The JKH is opposite the main entrance to Trevs. The whole building was refurbished a couple years ago and features a sports hall, a couple of multi-purpose rooms and the new gym. The sports hall itself is used for all kinds of things – as a place for groups as varied as College sports teams to the university orchestra practice. Also, in the JKH is the Dowrick Suite, a newly done up rehearsal/recital space, and a multi-faith room, usable by any members of the College for prayer or meditation as well as for music groups to practice in. Adjoining the JKH is the new gym (built last year!) which is fitted out with bikes, rowing machines, running machines, some weights machines, dumbbells and a punch bag among other things. Gym membership is £30 for the year, and the application form is inside this Freshers' Pack.

43

MUSIC ROOMS

On top of the JKH and Dowrick, there are a ton of other music practice spaces in College. On the front lawn of the College is the newly refurbished MASH room, which is now a top-of-the-line recording studio and musical rehearsal space. There is also a yet more music practice rooms on B and E ground, again with pianos. All of these spaces can be booked out or borrow the keys from the Porters.

OUTDOORS

This space is well maintained and is used by all students, especially during the summer. The back lawn, hosts a plethora of summer activities and the Quad (which actually has 24 sides), which hosts Trevs very own student music festival Trevstock. At the end of the lawn is a multi-purpose tennis, basketball and netball court – again for the use of everyone in College, and can be booked through the Porters.

ROOMS

When you arrive, we’ll help you in moving your belongings into your new room. You will either be given a single or shared room (more than half of people share for at least one term in the first year) but don’t worry if you do get chosen to share in first term, you’re bound to have a great experience and end up with an instant friend. Your room will be cleaned at regular intervals and your bins (both general waste and paper recycling) will be emptied every week. Your room is equipped with:

• Desk and chair • Single bed (no bedding unless previously requested) • Wardrobe with plenty of shelves and hanging space (hangers not provided) • Bedside table with drawers for further storage • Lockable under-bed box (in some rooms) • Sink, towel rail and mirror • Wi-fi

You’re welcome to put up posters on walls using white tack, just as long as you take them down when you leave! A lot of people put up photos on the wall too but don’t damage the walls. If your room is missing any of these things when you arrive contact the services officer ([email protected]).

OTHER FACILITIES

There is a Laundry Room in the College (on A Ground) which contains loads of washing machines, tumble driers and irons (Probably never been used!). Washing detergent is also auto-dispensing, so no need to worry about bringing any of that! All payment is done through an easy-to-use laundry card system. Each floor in each accommodation block contains a pantry with a microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge; so no need to bring your own (in fact, health and safety won't let you bring your own). There are excellent IT facilities, consisting of two computer rooms, a printer and a (free!) photocopier. The computers are all connected to the university network. There is a Post Room which has a pigeonhole for every member in College, large parcels are delivered to the Porter’s Lodge and there is a post box on site. Also, in the Undercroft (a communal relaxing space on the ground floor), we now have a PS4, courtesy of the Finance Committee, which is free to use. Trevs is a Smoke Free environment and this includes your room, the bar, The Quad and within 10m of entrances.

Freshers cannot bring cars to University unless they have a disability (and a blue badge) or it is necessary for their academic studies. In this case, it needs to be agreed in advance, so please speak to a College Officer first.

THE GARDEN GYM

GYM REPRESENTATIVE: GILES OCKENDEN [email protected]

As I'm sure many of you will already know Trevelyan College has recently built and re-equipped a new gym facility, equipped with both new cardio and weightlifting equipment, such as a brand new leg press and treadmill. Membership to the gym can be obtained throughout the year by emailing the Gym Rep and after attending a short induction session. It only costs £30 for the entire year, so if you would like to buy one for the whole year make sure to fill in the gym form! If you decide that you want to join later, the termly fee rate is £10.

More information about payment can be found on the Gym Info. Sheet

Note: The gym costs £160 a year if JCR Dues are not paid.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

ENVIRONMENT REPRESENTATIVE: NINA MERZ [email protected]

As a member of Trevelyan College and Durham University you are part of a community, which is proud to be committed to Environmental Sustainability. This is a commitment, which has led to the development of some challenging Carbon Reduction Targets, and we all have an important part to play.

GREENSPACE

Greenspace is the name for Durham University's Environment Office. The office coordinates environmental initiatives across the University relating to 8 key areas: Energy, Waste, Water, Travel, Biodiversity, Fairtrade, Procurement and Renewables.

ONLINE SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING

All students should complete this training module prior to arrival. This is accessed under the title Environmental Sustainability on your duo home page.

LAPTOP/PC SETUP

If you are bringing your own PC or laptop, please ensure that it is set up to enter hibernation mode if left unused for 15 minutes.

46

ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES

Last year we got involved in a competition against other Colleges for who reduced the most waste of food and electricity in a given week. We also organised a clothes swap day and a photography competition themed around plastic. At the end of the year, we run a campaign for Green Move Out, a project that directly recycles the stuff students leave behind when they go home.

This year we are planning to start with the revival of the allotment outside Trevs, which will be available for any student interested in taking care of the plants, and a books fair, where you will be able to buy cheap second hand books from older students. We may also have a selling stand for environmentally friendly products. The rest will be organised in the meetings of the Environment Committee, day by day.

THE JCR, MCR AND SCR

THE JCR (JUNIOR COMMON ROOM)

That's you! All undergraduate members of Trevs (who pay their JCR dues) make up the JCR, which acts as a forum for all student matters, and aims to improve the quality of College and student life. The JCR gives students a unified voice at university level and with College management, helps run a wide range of societies, and runs events for students such as Formals and larger events including our Summer Ball (the highlight of the year for events!), all for your enjoyment!

The JCR is run by the Executive Committee (aka 'the Exec'), also known as 'Tier 1' roles. The Exec is made up of 12 elected students who run different areas of the JCR, such as working with College officers (the Principal, Bursar, etc), managing the JCR's finances, or representing the JCR at Durham Students Union. There are also Tier 2 & 3 roles which exist to help the Exec in their work. They are elected each year by JCR members, and their terms begin at the end of Epiphany term each year (that's right before the Easter holidays) at a special Handover Formal. Elections are run by the JCR Chair as online ballots, and, depending on the tier, have husts (Q&A sessions for candidates) and campaigning. For more information on this process - and how you can get involved with the JCR - check the 'Getting Involved' section later in this handbook.

If you'd like to read the finer details, have a look at the JCR Standing Orders (our constitution) online. You can also get in touch with the JCR Chair (Seth Weisz) if you've got any questions about the JCR.

THE MCR (MIDDLE COMMON ROOM)

All postgraduate members of Trevs (doing masters, doctorates or PGCEs) are members of the MCR. The MCR have their own Exec, and, as graduates, have access to the SCR. They are not members of the JCR, but they participate in JCR events, such as Summer Ball, and societies, such as sports. JCR members on an integrated Masters (4 Year Course) become associate members of the MCR in their 4th Year.

47

THE SCR (SENIOR COMMON ROOM)

The SCR are a group consisting of academics, university staff, Alumni and friends of the College. They have various functions throughout the year, some of them open to all of the College such as talks by guest speakers. As a group they are the most senior common room in the College community - you may see some of them as members of the JCR societies or playing at the various music events. They are there to help support student activities and development.

As well as being a body of people, the SCR is also a place – it is a large room with comfy chairs on H ground. This is generally an undergrads-free zone (the only one in College!) unless by special invitation. For those of you who are privileged enough to be invited to Formal High Table – you will meet in here for pre-formal drinks before entering the dining hall.

JCR MEETINGS

JCR meetings are your chance to have a say in how the JCR is run. They happen three times each term and are a public meeting in the bar of the JCR and executive committee, organised by the JCR Chair (Seth Weisz) to discuss future plans of the JCR. They usually happen on a Sunday and last around an hour.

• Firstly, the meeting starts with the JCR Exec giving reports on what they have been doing since the last meeting. It s also an opportunity to ask them questions to make sure they re doing their jobs. • Secondly, sometimes tier 2 positions like the music rep also give reports just like the ones the exec give. • We then move on to the most important part of the meeting, motions. Motions are any formal proposal of the JCR. If you want anything to happen in the JCR it must be put in the form of a motion. These can be made by anyone about anything but need to be voted on by everyone at the JCR meeting for it to be passed.

Before JCR meetings there are sometimes hustings for various positions, these take the form of small speeches where the candidate outlines why they would be good for the position.

COMPLAINTS

Despite the exec s best efforts, some things are bound to go wrong. In that case, it might be worth talking to the officer involved and let them know what went wrong so that they can resolve it for next time. Alternatively, if you don t feel like your complaint was dealt with fairly, or you feel like you can t approach the person in question then the Chair (Seth Weisz) is fully impartial and will be able to help.

GETTING INVOLVED

At Durham because of the collegiate system you can get involved in a massive variety of ways, be it societies or anything else that takes your fancy. One great way to get involved is at College level by running for an elected tiered position. This sound daunting but often requires no experience and are fun to do! (not to mention they look great on your CV!) It means you can have an ultimate say in one area of College and help to craft Trevs into the community you really want it to be! Positions are elected throughout the entire academic year, so always keep your eye out on something that you might be interested in!

48

RUNNING FOR POSITIONS

There are three Tiers of elected positions:

TIER 1

Also known as the Executive Committee (Exec), these roles oversee the entire JCR. There are thirteen positions, all students (except the Bar Steward, which is a sabbatical role filled by an ex-student, usually the year after they finish their degree). There are 3 Ex Officio positions (Chair, Bar Steward, and Buttery Chair), which aren't officially on the Executive Committee for various reasons but have the same importance and work closely together.

To run for a Tier 1 position, you will need to write a short manifesto, canvass voters around College, and hust (a short speech and Q&A to JCR members). These positions open throughout the year - you'll be emailed by the Chair in advance of this so you can decide to run. Tier 1 & 2 positions responsibilities begin and end at Handover Formal at the end of Epiphany term each year.

TIER 2

These roles have narrower responsibilities than Exec members but all focus on enhancing the student experience in a particular area. These range from roles with a specific focus such as Music or Sports Representatives, to those supporting Tier 1 roles directly such as Assistant Treasurer or Assistant Social Chair. Although they have fewer duties than Tier 1 roles, they are still vital to the running of the JCR community.

To run for a Tier 2 position, the process is similar to the Tier 1 elections but without any canvassing.

TIER 3

Members of various JCR committees are Tier 3 roles. These committees assist Tier 1 roles in their jobs and often offer a wider view in decision making. These committees range from Social Committee which plans Trevs events(!) to Steering Committee which assists the Chair in running elections and with JCR meetings.

To run for a Tier 3 position, you only need to write a manifesto (no husts or canvassing needed!). Most Tier 3 positions run from the start to the end of the academic year: some elections open just a few weeks after Freshers' week, so it's a great first experience of the JCR.

Reminder: you must opt-in to JCR Dues to run for positions and vote.

49

DURHAM STUDENTS' UNION

The Durham Students Union is your main representative body for issues that affect students at across the University. It has an Assembly, that decides on Union policy, and various associations that represent the interests of minority groups, such as Students with Disabilities and People of Colour. The DSU Representative attends Assembly on behalf of Trevs, to vote on and bring up the concerns of Trevs students and (try to) make positive change!

Groups within the union do all sorts of things, from charity work (DUCK) to looking after student welfare (Nightline). Additionally, the Union provides various services: running a night bus to help you get home after dark and the Riverside Bar & Café for subsidised drinks.

It is also the hub for all of the clubs and societies that exist at a university level - think everything from pole dancing to archaeology, beer pong to skydiving. There s genuinely something for everyone.

The Students Union has five Sabbatical officers (ex-students who are directly elected by the student body in second term) each with a specific set of responsibilities. These include the opportunities officer (looking after clubs & societies) and undergraduate academic officer (making sure you get the best standard of teaching). Voting in Students’ Union election often carries prizes for the highest turnout by College. In 2019, Trevs was visited by two alpacas for its significant turnout during the voting period!

The Students' Union is affiliated closely with the National Union of Students (NUS), through which it conducts campaigns on issues ranging from climate change to tuition fees. Part of the Students' Union Representative s job is to promote these in College so that students can get involved. If you see anything and feel passionate enough to want to have a go then just find our Students' Union Representative (Freddie Green) and you ll be able to talk it over!

50

FORMALS

Under normal conditions, formals are special nights in Trevs held every two or so weeks. They are big social occasions in College - an opportunity to have a decent three course meal and possibly a few drinks with your friends for about £2.50 - £6, followed by a classic Trevs Bar night with a DJ.

The dress code is usually formal (shocking!), meaning a suit and tie, dress or another similarly smart outfit, along with a black gown. You buy your gown on the first day, so don’t worry about it before arriving.

There are also some special formals towards the end of each term which are usually huge nights. The dress code is usually different for these, normally black tie but sometimes fancy dress around a theme.

In the meal itself you can take up to one bottle of wine in, or the equivalent in other alcohol, and most people get that from the bar, which opens just before formals. You can bring your own drinks not from the bar but you have to pay corkage (£3.50) – so you’re better off buying from the bar. Post formal the bar is open, the music’s on, and you can buy some more drinks in preparation for the night ahead. Mostly, people stay in the bar until it closes and then a group will go to town to finish the night in a club.

There’s a few rules you should be aware of:

• You have to be there on time or you won’t be allowed in. Leave time to get your drinks from the bar, because everyone’s trying to get their bottles of wine. • Once it’s started, you’re not meant to leave until the President bows out, but if you do you can’t come back in: you’re giving up the rest of your meal. • Keep your gown on until the people on high table have sat down. Don’t stand up at any point during the meal. • No mobile phones. • No drinking games. • There’s also some fun traditions (your Freps will explain these).

Bar 33 33 Neville Street, DH1 4EY

A champagne/cocktail bar if you want a slightly more fancy, chilled evening.

Not a working space but a cheap and fun bar that offers a very different experience to a typical College bar.

Aside from the fantastic College events run by the students, Durham has a burgeoning nightlife which is reflective of the growing student population.

NIGHTLIFE

Babylon 15 North Rd, Durham DH1 4SQ

Huge new venue in Durham. It is themed around the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and only opened in October 2019, so it is a bit of a unknown entity! It describes itself as the perfect destination for watching sports, sipping on cocktail, dining or dancing the night away, with it running 4 club nights a week.

Jimmy Allen’s (Jimmy’s) 20 Elvet Bridge, DH1 3AA

Located under Elvet Bridge in what used to be a jail with three bars on three different floors. Free entry all night makes it a student magnet at the start and end of the night, however, the small dance floor quickly becomes crowded and uncomfortable. Pop tunes all night, every night.

Klute Elvet Bridge, DH1 3AF

Thrives off the reputation as the worst club in Europe, but much more fun than this suggests. Perfect for those who want a cheap, cheesy night out, with great deals on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays. It has plenty of drinks offers, but suffers due to the small dance floor, sticky walls and musty scent. At most £3 entry with a campus card but quids in on Tuesday offers £1 entry.

56

Lloyd’s Walkergate Leisure Complex, DH1 1WA

The local Wetherspoon’s with cheap drinks but doubles as a nightclub on Wednesday nights, often a popular Trevs hangout. Classic tunes play on through the night. £2 entry after 11pm.

Loft 15-17 North Road, DH1 4SH

This newer club has recently hit the big time holding busy nights throughout the week. Leans towards house and RnB music and also holds specialised events such as switch-up for the hip-hop fanatics amongst you and Gospel, a fancy dressed themed day event. Loft is also host to the new Itchy Feet night transporting revellers back to the swinging sixties. For events tickets are best booked in advance (Fixr) but for general nights, entry is no more than £5.

Osbourne’s 21A Elvet Bridge, Durham DH1 3AA

With its central location (next to Klute and above Flat White) Osbourne s is one of the more intimate bars in Durham. The bar is famed for its Rainbow Mondays - a weekly LGBT+ night hosted in association with Durham's LGBT+A with Emma Royd and Tess Tickle, famed Drag Queens, alternating as DJ s each week.

Player’s Unit 3 Walkergate, DH1 1SQ

A new club for 2018. Big nights are mainly Wednesday night for University Sport Socials and they also host themed nights. The sound system is massive lending to the house remixes that are classic nightclub tunes. Tickets are generally bought in advance and are at least £5.

Studio 15-17 North Road, DH1 4SQ

Although initially seeming like the same club as Loft, Studio is in fact a different venue. However, it caters for very much the same music tastes as it’s downstairs neighbour, Loft. Entry is in the £5 region.

Wiff Waff Back Silver St, DH1 3RA

Hosts genre focussed club nights. Shakermaker is a specialised indie night and they also play house and hip-hop on their main night of the week, Monday. Doubles as a ping pong/beer pong venue. Entry is generally around £5.

Remember Newcastle is only a short trip away for a more expansive experience!

JCR WELFARE

JCR Welfare is here to help you throughout your time at Trevs and to make sure you are safe and happy so can make the most of your university experience! So, what does that involve?

• Weekly drop-ins where you can come and chat about anything (with accompanying snacks!). • Signposting to various support services within the university and beyond. • Providing a range of sexual health and sanitary supplies. • Running awareness campaigns on everything from housing to mental health. • Running the academic parenting system for all freshers. • Welfare room at College events.

WELFARE OFFICER: LOTTIE IBBOTSON [email protected]

Hey Freshers, I’m Lottie – your Welfare Officer. The rest and I of your wonderful welfare team are here to support you throughout your time at university, and ensure that you have the best possible university experience. No problem is too big or too small, so whether you have a specific problem in mind, or just fancy a chat, we’re here to support you! The easiest way to reach us is to attend our weekly Welfare drop-ins (in B ground Tutor room). However, you can also contact myself via email, the Facebook page or the Welfare mobile. No matter the nature or level of support you seek, we can provide you with information on the relevant support services available in Durham and how to access them. Welfare also provide you with sanitary supplies (including menstrual cups!) as well as any sexual health supplies you may need, such as condoms, pregnancy tests, and lube.

Alongside providing reactive support, Welfare also runs awareness campaigns covering a range of issues which are common at University: mental health, sexual health, alcohol awareness, housing etc. These campaigns are organised by the Welfare Awareness Committee which I chair. The committee is great way for you to actively get involved with welfare, so please get in touch if you’d like to know more. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to chat, I’ll be happy to help!

ASSISTANT WELFARE OFFICER: MEGAN HUANG [email protected]

Hi Trevs! I am Megan, your Assistant Welfare Officers. I work together with Lottie to provide any support that you may need during your time in College. The main aspect of our role is to run weekly drop-in sessions with the rest of the welfare team, where anyone can come for a casual chat or to talk about any issues you may have. Importantly – biscuits are always provided!

Alongside the Welfare Committee we help organise awareness campaigns on topics ranging from mental and sexual health to alcohol awareness and housing. During major College events you can find us in the designated welfare room where

CONSENT MATTERS

With the increased awareness of the extent of sexual violence in universities throughout the country, Trevs and Durham University as a whole are trying to do their part in increasing understanding of these issues. As a part of this, we encourage all incoming freshers to complete the online consent matters course. This is an evidence-based course covering the areas of sexual consent, communication and relationships and bystander training in four modules.

Once you have your Oracle Learning login details you are free to complete the module at any time. If you have any questions on the course or want to chat about any of its content, come and speak to the welfare team or contact Trevelyan Support at [email protected]

MONEY MATTERS

JCR FINANCE

The JCR has 3 main sources of income:

JCR Dues, paid by each member of the JCR in their first year. This is a £130 one off membership fee, paid to the JCR, giving you access to a huge number of incredible opportunities, such as sports teams, music & drama societies, and amazing events. Don't forget to opt in! The Composition Fee, a levy from the local authorities. Income from service and investments, such as the pool table, and selling things such as event T- Shirts. These sources of income then fund JCR facilities (such as gym maintenance), services (like the free photocopier), Trevs Day (an entire College day of celebrations after exams), smaller events such as bar nights, JCR clubs and societies as well as boring but important things like licensing!

Currently, the JCR can accept payments by cash, or online banking for certain things, as well as card payments – however payment information will always be circulated well in advance of any event!

BATTELS

Battels is the fancy name given to the bills that College emails to your @durham.ac.uk address near the beginning of the year. Included in it are all your living costs (internet, all your meals, cleaning, electricity etc.)

WHERE TO KEEP YOUR MONEY

There is a quite a large number of banks in Durham so look around for the best bank for you. Look at what they are offering: some offer a Young Persons railcard, cheap insurance or free overdrafts. Make sure you are aware of the overdraft your account has and any charges for exceeding your overdraft as well as what will happen when you graduate. Having online banking is very useful as once you are settled into Trevs; a lot of payments (for example formals and events) can be made by online transfer.

62

INSURANCE

Your personal items (laptops, phones etc.) are used at the owners own risk and the JCR bears no responsibility for loss or damage. You should check your home insurance policy to see if your personal items are covered or if you should invest in insurance to cover them. Also, Trevs JCR's insurance does not cover sporting activities, however contact Team Durham for details of what their sports insurance covers (which is part of the Team Durham fee on your first bill).

YOUR PERSONAL FINANCE

Sit down with your parents and make sure you understand all the costs associated with university (Battels, travel, leisure costs and many more) and how you will cover them. Everyone has different spending habits and different perceptions of what is expensive: there is no ‘one fits all’ budget. It is good to remember that first term is the longest (11 weeks). You will probably spend more money in this term as well (subscription fees to societies and textbooks). If you are a home student make sure you have looked into the Students Loans Company: both for the tuition fee loan (paid directly to the university) and the maintenance loans (paid directly to you). More information can be found at https://www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.

If you get into any trouble with finances firstly do not worry as you won’t be the only one and there is always help around. If you do have any financial problems, get in touch with Professor Adekunle Adeyeye (Principal), Emma Mokes (Treasurer), Alannah Life (President), Lottie Ibbotson (Welfare Officer), or any member of the College Finance Team, all of whom can offer help and advice.

There are various other costs that you will encounter when you come to university. This list summarises some of the costs you will incur (this is not exhaustive):

• Gown - New gowns cost £57, sold at the start of Freshers’ week (limited number of ‘first come- first served’ second hand gowns available for £35). Gowns are required for Matriculation, a compulsory ceremony for induction into the University. They are also necessary for the majority of Trevs Formal Dinners! Gowns can be loaned for matriculation but be aware that they are required for multiple occasions whilst at Uni! • Platinum Pass (see the form in your Freshers packs) for the big College bops and balls throughout the year that nearly everyone attends – this costs £80 and purchasing this ticket will save you £22 in the long run! • Formals - these happen about once a fortnight and start at £2.50 for a full three course meal but the price can increase depending on the occasion and menu. • Subscription Fees to Societies – these vary hugely depending on the society. • Social Life – completely dependent on the individual!

SAVING TIPS

• Buy a Platinum Pass – and save £22 later on in the year. • Colour Catchers save washing different colours separately. • Look on Amazon and charity shops for textbooks – but remember to use the library! • Your campus card acts as an NUS student card, so always ask for student discount. • Travel can be expensive buy your tickets in advance - the coach is cheaper than the train! • If you are going to travel by train, look into getting a Young Persons Railcard (saves a third on rail fares)

63

• Get involved – University is one of the only chances you will get to try out new sports and activities for a fraction of the cost in the real world !

LIBRARIES

THE BILL BRYSON (BILLY B)

The Main University Library, located on the Science Site, houses the majority of subjects’ collections. It’s got basically everything you’ll ever need, as lecturers give their reading lists to the library each year and they order in anything that’s required. There’s also a Document Delivery Service, which can give you access to pretty much anything else that might tickle your academic fancy. The main entrance, bizarrely, is on Level 2, and you’ll find a large computer room, group study area, the new library café, photocopiers, the reference section and the reserve collection (really popular, short loan books) on this floor. Level 1 for Humanities, Level 3 for Sciences and Level 4 for Social Sciences – although you’ll find that the collections overlap, and often half the books you want will be on a different level.

The best way to find something in the library is to look it up on the computer system (www.library.dur.ac.uk), which will tell you where your book is, how many copies there are, how long the loan is (from four hours to three weeks) and whether or not it’s available at College libraries (including Trevs). It’s also a good idea to take advantage of the library tours available, as these can be invaluable when you’re trying to find your way around. One major point to remember about the library is that they do fine for late book returns.

The library also has bookable study rooms (https://www.dur.ac.uk/library/password/rooms/), ranging from individual study spaces to group work rooms for up to six people. You can book them for up to 28 hours a week and can be useful for rehearsing for presentations as they come equipped with a projector.

64

TREVS LIBRARY

The College library is open 24/7! As a Trevs student, you also get access to the College library, which is not available to people in other Colleges. This can be an absolute godsend when you want a very popular book, and also when you don’t want to carry a load of books up from another library – Trevs stocks a large amount of the recommended and essential books, and given enough notice, Tim (the College Librarian) can order in a book for you.

As well as its large (and ever expanding) collection of academic books, Trevs Library also boasts a fiction section and a new academic DVD library. Books in the library (other than the reference books) can be checked out for three weeks and can be both renewed and recalled. You can search the catalogue through the Main Library catalogue, or the College search page at www.dur.ac.uk/trevs.library. There are library inductions at the beginning of the year, where you can ask any questions you might have!

EDUCATION LIBRARY

This is in the Education Department (near Hild Bede College) which is only a 7 minute walk from Elvet and is usually one of the quieter libraries in Durham but also one of the furthest away.

ELVET RIVERSIDE

This ‘library’ has no books, but is a useful study area with yet more networked computers.

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARIES

As well as the College library and the Bill Bryson, many departments have their own libraries with books specific for the subjects, meaning that you don’t have to pay the high prices for all your textbooks!

PALACE GREEN LIBRARY

Located on the stunning Palace Green, this library is more of a masters’ research centre than anything else, but is a good place for quiet study if you have lectures in town, and has an excellent group study area.

COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SERVICE

Durham University had its own department Computing and Information Service (CIS) this can be found online (using DUO), twitter (@Durhamuni_CIS) or there is a department in the Bill Bryson library, if you have any problems make sure to get in contact. They are responsible for your internet connection and the public computers (Network Service PCs). CIS also provide free technical support, website hosting, printing and a whole bundle of other services.

Make sure to visit https://www.dur.ac.uk/cis/newstudents/ when you arrive for instructions on how to get online. If you don't have your own computer be aware Trevs has a 24 hour computer suite with free use for any College member and nearly all libraries and departments have their own computers available for use.

65

There are printers in College, the libraries, and in subject departments. Printing can be done throughout the university via your campus card, and credit can be topped up online through the Library section of DUO. Printing at Durham is extraordinarily easy as documents can be sent from your student email to the relevant printer by simply sending to either the monochrome or colour accounts:

• Monochrome - [email protected] • Colour - [email protected]

Trevelyan s website (trevsjcr.com) is also an essential part of finding out about: daily news, welfare information, contact forms and important documents.

GUIDE TO REGISTRATION

Departmental registration is a necessary procedure undertaken by all students in order to become a fully- fledged member of the university. It s dull as hell, but there s absolutely no way of getting out of it, so find a friend on the same course to register with, or whack your iPod on, and get to it!

The process is slightly different for different degree programmes, but below is a guide to help ease those registration worries. If you would like to ask some questions, or need help with any of the stages, don t hesitate to ask any of the Freps, Exec members or your Academic Parents - they ve all done it before so should be able to help!

CAMPUS CARDS

On the day you arrive, you’ll be directed to verify your identification in one of the College offices and collect your campus card. You should have enrolled online before you came and had the opportunity to upload a photo, which will be used on your campus card. If your photo has been accepted then you can pick up your campus card in College on Freshers Sunday provided you bring a passport, driving license or your original birth certificate to verify your ID - make sure any details you enter online correspond exactly with your proof of ID! This year photo upload must be done online pre-arrival, as you will be unable to get a photo taken here. Your campus card is needed for everything in Durham; from going to other College bars to getting discounts in shops (it is also your NUS card). But be warned, they re expensive to replace (£15!) so try you best to keep it safe - it s a right faff if you lose it!

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Registration for modules takes place online. More information regarding registration will be available when you arrive, clarifying the exact procedure.

ANY PROBLEMS

If during this process you have any problems or questions, don t hesitate to ask your Freshers' rep. If they can t help then they will put you in contact with someone who can. Don t worry; you won t be the only one in that situation! Don t panic if you miss a time(s) for registration or are rushing to get it all done, the staff do appreciate how complicated it is and tend to be lovely about it all!

PORTERS

The Porters are an essential part of College life, and not only on a manual, getting-things-done basis. The jobs that the Porters carry out include signing out keys to students, welcoming visitors, helping replace light bulbs, and signing for packages.

You will probably get to know our Porters personally, and when you do you ll understand why we re so fond of them, as they are lovely guys that you ll miss when you leave. What a lot of students don t realise is that they have been around for a long time, and are more clued up than you might think! Be sure to meet them with a smile and they ll be sure to meet you with a wry whay aye’ back.

There is always at least one College porter on duty, 24 hours a day. If they are not in the Porters Lodge (between the Cobbles and the Bar) they will be around College somewhere. You can press a button (providing you need them for a genuine reason!) that brings them back to the Lodge, and you can also contact them on internal 47047 (although it s probably best to just go and find them). They are always happy to help with any problem and really are part of the backbone of College. We d be totally lost without them and they deserve the utmost respect! Please see them for any help or just for a friendly chat (they don t bite and they like to talk!).

In the Porter’s Lodge you will find:

• Various important books for signing in/out keys and guests, booking the badminton court, reporting damage and requesting repairs. • Keys for rooms, trunk rooms, music rooms, library, JKH, boat club… Light Bulbs (if you ask nicely they might even change it for you!). • Telephone Directories (including the Yellow Pages). • Attack alarms, ladders, bin bags. • Access to parcels that don t fit in your pigeonhole so are stored in a locked cabinet near their office.

SECURITY

Close your windows and lock your door when you leave your room, even if only for a short time, especially on the ground floor. There is a small fee if you get locked out of your room and the Porter has to open the door (cleaners will lock rooms if they are unlocked so don't be caught out! Always have your key and lock your door!

68

The two bike sheds are both secure so if you do bring a bike up there is a safe place to store it just remember to lock it every time you leave because everybody wants their bike to be safe!

Basic insurance comes as part of the resident agreement but there are add-ons you may need so it's your responsibility to check and make sure you have the correct cover.

The front door is locked every night around midnight. Access is gained via a keypad code, which will be issued to you on arrival (and changes every term so make sure you keep up to date). The K Block entrance is locked at 7pm daily, you can enter here using your room key until 10pm.

NOISE

Always remember that College is still a working place and please be considerate of both students and staff alike. There is a noise curfew at 11pm after which time all noise should be kept to an absolute minimum.

If you are disrupted by noise follow the following procedure to deal with the issue: • Wherever possible attempt to resolve the noise complaint yourself. • If this does not work or is not appropriate, contact the Porters.

SAFETY INFORMATION

FIRE SAFETY

If you are discover a fire follow the following procedure to deal with the issue:

• Sound the nearest alarm. • Do not tackle the fire yourself unless trained with the appropriate equipment • Never put yourself unnecessarily in danger

If you hear the alarm:

Wherever you are leave the building immediately by the nearest exit and go straight to the assembly point, the Elvet Hill Car Park. DO NOT stop to collect personal belongings and DO NOT re-enter the building. You MUST go ONTO the Elvet Hill Park, not just wait outside College, as this will block the entrance for the fire engines when they arrive. Wait for further instructions (usually from a College officer).

Please note that the fire brigade will NOT be automatically called every time the alarm sounds. When the alarm sounds, the porter will investigate the area where the alarm was set off, and then call the fire department as necessary. Due to this time delay, it is ESSENTIAL that you leave the building immediately, in case there is a genuine fire and it spreads quickly.

There are fire alarms in every room so be very careful. The alarms are sensitive and burning toast (hence no toasters or kettles in rooms), joss sticks (not allowed) or spraying aerosols can be sufficient to set them off. You can be fined for causing an alarm to sound. A false alarm at College could cost someone’s life elsewhere by delaying the arrival of the emergency services.

Remember: every second counts.

69

EMERGENCIES

If there is a disturbance in College that you feel needs some attention the procedure is as follows:

• For fire, theft, medical emergencies, threats or no response from Noiselane always contact the Porter on duty on extension 47047 (0191 334 7047) or at the Porters Lodge.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Something is broken in my room. How do I fix it? Go to: www.dur.ac.uk/trevelyan.college/password/currentstudents/accommodation/reportaproblem and this same method works for broken items around College including in your pantries and bathrooms as well as communal areas such as the Undercroft, pool table or upper JCR. Failing this, get in touch with the JCR Services Officer (Euphemia Wong).

How can I use the gym? To use the gym, membership must be purchased which is £10 a term (if you have paid JCR dues) and a short induction session must be attended. Get in contact with the gym rep (Giles Ockenden) to organise. The gym can only be used if there are a minimum of 2 people in the gym at any one time. This may be change depending on the Covid-19 situation.

Can friends stay in College? Of course! Friends can stay for up to three days; any longer requires staff permission. Get a camp bed to make their stay a little more comfortable from an exec drop-in in the JCR Office with any form of ID or £5 as a deposit.

What does the JCR provide? Aside from the incredible events, formals and committees that you can get involved in as member of the JCR, we, as a community, have a whole list of materials and equipment that are available for the use of anyone in College. Sports equipment such as tennis and badminton racquets, and footballs, a volleyball net and a croquet set can be taken out! Just leave your campus card as a deposit. There are also a whole host of stationery supplies that can be borrowed to aid your creativity. Finally, a PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Wii are available for anyone in the JCR to use. Remember that if you feel the Trevs community could benefit from something new, apply to FinComm to fund your idea.

What if the College printer runs out of ink or paper? Paper is always available in the JCR Office. For new ink get in contact with the Publicity Officer (Vivienne Gardner) to notify CIS.

Do I need a TV license? You will need one if you want to put a TV in your room or if you want to watch BBC iPlayer or live events (including sport). However, there are TVs around College and the bar will always screen events and sport on terrestrial channels including Eurovision, the Six Nations and the FA Cup and Champions League Final.

70

WHAT NOT TO BRING

Make sure you save space to travel by not bringing these items that are not allowed or useless:

• A-Level Notes - No-one actually uses them! • Animals - Sorry, Health and Safety means that nothing from an aardvark to a zebra is allowed. • Candles and Incense - A fire alarm magnet and you don t want to set off the fire alarm at 4am! • Fridges - Only allowed for medical purposes. You get them in your pantries though! • Irons - Provided by College and are a fire risk so they are not allowed in your rooms. • Printer - There s a printer in College. Everyone will leach off your printer if you do decide to bring one! • Toasters/Kettles - Illegal in your room and provided in every pantry anyway. • TV - Plenty around College and if you bring a TV for your room you ll have to pay a TV License.

71

ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST

PLEASE IGNORE THE CHEQUEBOOK. THIS IS NO LONGER NEEDED!

72
