Wright Religious Education, BYU Master of Arts This thesis contends that youth from age twelve to twenty-five played a pivotal role in the revivals of the Second Great Awakening in New York and New England. Rather than merely being passive onlookers in these religious renewals, the youth were active participants, influencing the frequency, spread, and intensity of the Christian revivals. Relying heavily upon personal accounts written by youth and revival records from various denominations, this work examines adolescent religious experiences during the first half of the nineteenth century. Chapter 1 explores the impact parents had on youth religiosity, showing how the teaching and examples they saw in their homes built the religious foundation for young people. The next chapter discusses how the youth continued to build upon what they were taught in their homes by seeking for personal conversion experiences. This chapter contends that conversion experiences were the crucial spiritual turning point in the lives of young people, and explores how they were prepared for and reacted to these experiences. Chapter 3 outlines personal worship among the youth and describes the specific tactics that churches implemented in helping convert and strengthen the young. As churches used revival meetings and clergy-youth relationships to fortify these converts, young people implemented the same practices in helping their peers. Finally, chapter 4 utilizes revival records and Methodist church data to provide quantitative evidence of the widespread and crucial role that young people had in influencing revivals. Understanding the widespread impact of these youth on nineteenth-century revivals provides new insight into the ways in which young people impacted the greater social, religious, and culture changes sweeping across America at the time. The spirit of freedom permeated the people of the United States, which was emerging from a successful revolution just a few decades before, and pervaded the social, economic, and spiritual lives of the people—especially those of New York and New England.1 This new period of religious fervor, termed the Second Great Awakening, was characterized by prevalent conversion—personal religious experiences which caused individuals to devote themselves to Christ—and subsequent joining of various churches, dramatic manifestations, and frequent religious gatherings. Authors have discussed extensively the reasons for the emergence of such revivals and the impact they had on communities and society as a whole, examining them primarily through a macro-lens. However, the religious experience and impact of a significant segment of the population, the youth, has largely been unwritten. During the first half of the nineteenth century, many youth engaged themselves in religious gatherings through frequent attendance at various church and spiritual meetings, sharing of religious conversion experiences, proselytizing work among peers, and general excitement for religious topics. Yet, despite this involvement, scholars have largely overlooked the role that youth played in the spread of, the involvement in, and the continuation of revivals during the first half of the nineteenth century—thus a wide 1 Nathan O Hatch, The Democratization of American Christianity (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1989). 2 scholastic gap remains to be filled specifically focusing on youth involvement in religion.2 Even with the abundance of nineteenth-century records that expound upon youth conversion experiences, basic religiosity, and revival and church data, few scholars have told the story of the lived religion of youth.3 While this approach of exploring “practiced religion” has been applied to other historical groups throughout time, this method has never been specifically implemented in a significant way in relation to nineteenth-century youth and the Second Great Awakening.4 This method of exploring and examining everyday experience “opens doors to an astonishing range of historical queries” about the practices of youth.5 What was the driving force behind the youths’ desire for religious activity? Few women in early nineteenth-century America provoked more admi- ration, criticism, and controversy than Harriet Livermore. She was the daughter of a congressman and the grand-daughter of a senator, but after an emotional conversion experience, she renounced her privileged life in order to become a female preacher. Reputed to be a gifted evangelist who was also a beautiful singer, she became so popular that she was allowed to preach in front of Congress four times between 1827 and 1844, each time to huge crowds. According to a Washington newspaper, more than a thousand people assembled in the Hall of Representatives to hear her preach in 1827, and hundreds more gathered outside to catch a glimpse of her. President John Quincy Adams had to sit on the steps leading up to her feet because he could not find a free chair. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

The Methodist Episcopal Church was remarkably successful during the period 1798 - 1840. The period is bounded by the Second Great Awak~niug and the rising debate over slavery, which dwarfed other issues by 1840. Membership grew from 60,169 in 1798 to 795,445 reported by the General Conference of 1840. Institutions of learning, e.g., Augusta College, Madison 1 Collegel Indiana Asbury, Centenary College, LaGrange, Wesleyan, Emory, and Henry College, were founded. By 1833, Methodists had Bible, Sunday School, Tract, and Mission societies. In 1836, the Methodist Publishing House became the Methodist Book Concern. In the writings of the itinerants for the period there was one generally stated reason for this success: "Doubtless our denominational progress is attributable to a great many con­ ditions, but our preaching has been the chief one; it has been related to and has empowered all others." "Asbury and his corps of Circuit-Riders believed that the nation could actually be reformed and the world saved by the 'foolishness of preaching' ." 1 A primary condition that fostered Methodism's growth was the revival­ ism of America's Second Great .Awakening which extended at least from 1797 to 1817. An eastern phase revolved around Yale College and President Timothy Dwight, while a western phase was associated with the Cane Ridge, Kentucky meeting of 1801. The innovation of the frontier camp meeting was adopted by the Methodists and in 1807 Francis Asbury wrote to Edward Dromgoole, "camp meetings prevail generally.

The theology of such a denomination is practiced organically by the people and is seldom articulated by the academy. Thus one cannot find a well articulated theological understanding of what ordination means for the individual and the community in the Baptist context. A synthesis of Geertz’s thick description, Lindbeck’s approach to doctrine, and McClendon’s understandings of speech-acts and conviction will offer a methodology through which one can articulate a theology of ordination. In doing so, we will find that the “call” and a relationship with a congregation are essential for ordination to occur. Such a theology will suggest that one is changed through ordination, and this change is relational in nature. The Catholic concept of Sacramental Consciousness offers a way to articulate the community’s awareness of the pastor’s relational change while at the same time maintaining the egalitarian nature of a Baptist community.
