  • Harsham – “Happiness Redefined” Geriatric Care Programme
Harsham – “Happiness Redefined” Geriatric Care Programme Harsham - “Happiness Redefined” An Elderly Care program from Kudumbasree Funding Partner: Kerala Academy for Skill Execellence (KASE) Implemented by: Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT) (A unit of HLL Lifecare Ltd) Harsham – “Happiness Redefined” 2 Harsham – “Happiness Redefined” 3 Since its inception, Kudumbashree Mission have been in the forefront, striving to wipe off poverty from Kerala and make the lives of the people get better in all senses. For the last 20 years, Kudumbashree had been actively functioning in the social scenario of Kerala framing and implementing innovative projects. By making way for the micro entrepreneurs to launch their own enterprises, we envisaged helping them find livelihood of their own and change the lives of many in a positive way. Kudumbashree Mission always aim to find opportunities for livelihood for its members so as to assist them earn better income, identifying the right opportunities. Two years back, we had initiated Harsham programme realizing the opportunities existing in the service sector of Kerala. As we all know, the availability of reliable and trained persons in elderly care is relatively less in Kerala. Those whose are ready to provide this service always would have greater job opportunities. We identified the opportunity in this and launched the Harsham Project for geriatric care. Harsham programme aims at providing intensive training of 15 days to women and equip them to provide service in geriatric care sector. The training for the caregivers was provided with the assistance of doctors, nurses and hospital management in selected hospitals in the state.

1 NRPPD Discussion Paper 42 WRONG MEANS FOR THE RIGHT ENDS? REFLECTIONS ON THE KASTURIRANGAN WORKING GROUP REPORT AND PLAUSIBLE WAY FORWARD K J Joseph D Narayana 2015 2 These Discussion Papers are produced by the National Research Programme on Plantation Development (NRPPD) Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, at Centre for Development Studies (CDS). The papers in this series aim to provide a platform for publishing preliminary results of the policy oriented research and it is meant for encouraging discussion and debate. The views expressed in this publication are those of the authors’ and do not necessarily reflect the views and policies of the NRPPD/CDS or the Ministry of Commerce. When reporting or citing this paper, the authors’ names should be stated clearly. Copyright © 2015, NRPPD, Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum. All rights reserved 3 ABSTRACT This paper highlights certain issues - analytical and empirical-associated with the classification by the Kasturirangan Committee of the environmentally sensitive areas in the Western Ghats region and their recommendations for environmental protection of the same. By drawing from Amartya Sen’s critique of the Report by Brundtland Commission – Our Common Future - the paper makes the case for a pro-freedom and choice based approach to environmental sustainability and argues that the approach of the Ministry of Environment and Forests has the potential of straining the centre-state relations. Finally the paper draws the broad contours of a plausible way forward. 4 1. Introduction The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had issued notifications severely limiting mining, quarrying and sand mining, building and construction projects, townships and area development projects and certain category of industries in the Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESA) of the Western Ghats.
