For the last 20 years, Kudumbashree had been actively functioning in the social scenario of Kerala framing and implementing innovative projects. By making way for the micro entrepreneurs to launch their own enterprises, we envisaged helping them find livelihood of their own and change the lives of many in a positive way. Kudumbashree Mission always aim to find opportunities for livelihood for its members so as to assist them earn better income, identifying the right opportunities. Two years back, we had initiated Harsham programme realizing the opportunities existing in the service sector of Kerala. As we all know, the availability of reliable and trained persons in elderly care is relatively less in Kerala. Those whose are ready to provide this service always would have greater job opportunities. We identified the opportunity in this and launched the Harsham Project for geriatric care. Harsham programme aims at providing intensive training of 15 days to women and equip them to provide service in geriatric care sector. The training for the caregivers was provided with the assistance of doctors, nurses and hospital management in selected hospitals in the state. Harsham team is all set to provide full time care on enterprise model to the elderly, extend day time care, provide service as bystander in hospitals and extend service as caretaker for old people in care homes. Till now, we had extended training to 578 people, out of which 308 had already got opportunity for service on monthly salary basis in various firms/ care homes/ houses. We aspire to extend training to at least 1000 people within the next one year and also aim at launching a service portal (website) where people who need geriatric care services can register, and services of the trained professionals can be given to those who register in the portal. With much pride and integrity Kudumbashree Mission is proudly presenting this book on Harsham Project for Geriatric Care. Hoping that you will have a great reading experience. United Nations considers 60 years as the age of transition to the elderly age group. Ageing of population is a major, emerging, demographic issue and is an inevitable consequence of the demographic transition experienced by most countries including India. In almost every country, the proportion of people aged above 60 years is growing faster than any other age group as a result of both longer life expectancy and declining fertility rates. In India the proportion of the population aged 60 years and above was 7 percent in 2009 and has been projected to increase to 20 percent by the year 2050. The population of the elderly in Kerala has been increasing rapidly in recent decades. The proportion of the elderly constituted 10 percent of the population as per the 2001 Census, which rose to 12 percent in 2011. If the present trend persists, Kerala’s older population (20%) will be more than the child population (18%) by the year 2030. The elderly population faces various physical, psychological and social problems. Thus, the care, protection and welfare of the aged will be a major challenge to the state and society. Harsham-Geriatric Care Programme Harsham Caregivers for eldercare is an innovative and a flagship programme of Kudumbashree which gives livelihood opportunities to many committed Kudumbashree members. This programme ensures the happiness of elderly people as well as poor people in the society. Majority of the elderly persons require attention and care from their loved ones as well as friends. Elder persons will get a decent and respectful post retirement life with the support of care giver. The family of the elders will also be able to focus more on their activities at the same time they can live stress free as there is some skilled and reliable persons at home to support the parents. The availability of reliable and trained persons in elderly care is a matter of concern. Also, the needs of the elderly persons are not about medical care, but it varies considerably. Loneliness, support for payment of bills & banking transactions, support for daily chores & medical care are some of the issues they are facing. Kudumbashree Mission analyzes it as a social issue and addressing it will find employment to women in the network. ‘Harsham-Geriatric Care’ a project for elderly care is therefore designed as an enterprise for geriatric care across the state addressing the issues of aged and elderly. The Geriatric care givers can help elderly by running routine errands, and providing a helping hand with the everyday tasks that often become more difficult for the elderly thereby bringing companionship, relationship building and sharing, humor and a sense of purpose back into the lives of the clients.
