Although some studies have addressed the phylogenetic relationships of the genus with other hylids using a few exemplar species, its internal relationships remain poorly understood. In order to test its monophyly and the relationships among its species, we performed a total evidence phylogenetic analysis of sequences of three mitochondrial and three nuclear genes, and 193 phenotypic characters from all species of Sphaenorhynchus. -

The 11 conversion of natural habitats into human-modified landscapes poses novel and multifaceted 12 environmental stressors to organisms, influencing their ecology, physiology, life history and 13 fitness. Although the effects of LULCC have been studied extensively at the community level, 14 there is scant information about its effect on population and individual characteristics. We 15 assessed the diet composition, body condition, and sexual size dimorphism of the common 16 African toad (Amietophrynus regularis) in urban and agricultural landscape. Diet composition 17 was evaluated using gut content analysis, while body condition was measured using residual 18 mass index. Overall, 935 prey items comprising six classes, at least 18 orders and 31 families 19 were obtained from toads. This broad dietary niche suggested that Amietophrynus regularis is a 20 generalist predator. -

Biota Neotropica. 18(3): e20170322. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1676-0611-BN-2017-0322 Abstract: The state of Paraná, located in southern Brazil, was originally covered almost entirely by the Atlantic Forest biome, with some areas of Cerrado savanna. In the present day, little of this natural vegetation remains, mostly remnants of Atlantic Forest located in the coastal zone. While some data are available on the anurans of the state of Paraná, no complete list has yet been published, which may hamper the understanding of its potential anuran diversity and limit the development of adequate conservation measures. To rectify this situation, we elaborated a list of the anuran species that occur in state of Paraná, based on records obtained from published sources. We recorded a total of 137 anuran species, distributed in 13 families. Nineteen of these species are endemic to the state of Paraná and five are included in the red lists of the state of Paraná, Brazil and/or the IUCN. -

A pericentromeric inversion was inferred to have occurred during W chromosome evolution, moving a chromosomal cluster enriched by the PcP190 from the short arm (as observed in P. bolbodactyla) to the NOR-bearing long arm (as observed in P. tocantins). However, whether such an inversion happened in P. tocantins or in the common ancestor of Pseudis fusca and P. tocantins remained unclear. To assess this question, we mapped PcP190 in the karyotype of P. fusca from three distinct localities. Southern blotting was used to compare males and females. -

Diet Composition and Niche Overlap in Two Sympatric Species of Physalaemus (Anura, Leptodactylidae, Leiuperinae) in Coastal Subtemperate Wetlands

Physalaemus Fitzinger, 1826 is the most speciose genus of Leiuperinae frogs, with more than 40 recognized species. They are widely distributed in the Neotropical region, especially in open areas, and are among the most abundant species in several anuran communities. Nevertheless, our comprehension of the diet composition and trophic relationships of these species remains poor. In this study, we describe and compare the diet of sympatric and syntopic populations of Physalaemus gracilis and P. biligonigerus that inhabit the southernmost coastal zone of Brazil. The stomach content analyses revealed 13 distinct prey categories in the diet of P. gracilis and 12 in the diet of P. biligonigerus. On one hand the diet compositions of the species were significantly different according to both numeric and volumetric evaluations. On the other hand, Coleoptera and Formicidae were the most important prey for both species. The niche breadth was higher for P. gracilis than P. biligonigerus, and niche overlap was relatively low for both species (28%). Our results indicate that P. biligonigerus has a less generalist diet than P. gracilis, with a remarkable consumption of ants. Although both species are morphologically similar and sympatric, they appear to present different feeding strategies or preferences based on the low values of niche overlap.
