BACKGROUND INFORMATION Godspell premiered in New York in 1971, when it debuted off-Broadway at Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City. Godspell was adapted into a film in 1973 and moved to Broadway by 1976. Now, this Tony Award® nominee for Best Original Score makes its Starlight debut. Godspell comes to Starlight Tuesday, June 22 – Sunday, June 27, as part of the AdventHealth Broadway Series. This refreshing retelling of the Gospel of Matthew spreads messages of kindness and tolerance in a sensational musical performance. Godspell includes chart-topping songs by Grammy and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz, such as the popular hit “Day by Day.” Audiences will be treated to impactful scenes ranging from light-hearted and amusing to serious and reflective. All six performances of Godspell will begin at 8 p.m., and gates will open at 7 p.m. Starlight is elated to welcome visitors in person to watch live performances such as Godspell as part of the 2021 AdventHealth Broadway Series. FUN FACTS • Godspell at Starlight will be the 2012 Broadway revival version, which was updated with new orchestrations. • The idea for Godspell was first formed at Carnegie Mellon University by then-student John- Michael Tebelak. An early workshopped version of Godspell was performed by a student-led cast in 1970 before the show was produced on a professional stage. MORE 1 • The show premiered in New York City on May 17, 1971, at Cherry Lane Theatre. In the same year, it would be performed at the Promenade. • In 1976, the musical would move to Broadway. Godspell was performed at the Broadhurst, Plymouth and Ambassador Theatres before closing in 1977. • Godspell was a Tony Award® nominee for Best Original Score in 1977. • Godspell was adapted for film in 1973. The film version was directed by David Greene and produced by Edgar Lansbury. • “Day by Day” is one of the most popular songs from Godspell. It once reached No. 13 on the Billboard pop singles chart.
