USS Mattaponi, AO-41—1942-1972 the Threat from the North Vietnam Mercenaries (Fishermen) Was Boarding from Fishing Boats Repel Boarders Team Sometime in Jan 68 Captain William L. Foster secretly formed the 50 man Repel Boarders Team in response to captured information from North Vietnam. Capt. Foster told us Ho Chi Minh put a bounty for On Station capture on four US ships— Mattaponi AO-41, Neches AO-47, Liberty AGER-1, and Pueblo AGER-2. AO-41 and AO-47 were selected from Janes Book of WW2 warships for lack of defense. Neches AO-47 was 1968 Tet Edition not in West Pac at this time. Mattie, with cargo became a prize of war. Our story becomes more relevant when you consider the ease today’s pirates capture jumbo tankers. Mattaponi had discipline, but lacked experience in small arms combat. USS Mattaponi, AO-41—1942-1972 The threat from the North Vietnam mercenaries (fishermen) was boarding from fishing boats. The planned attack would last 15 minutes because naval air support would arrive in 20 minutes. Slowing to 4 kts, Foster’s plan was let them board in waves followed by throwing hand grenades from the cargo deck into SS Kalkay - Mattie - Mad Mattie - Mad Poni - the boats below thus creating more confusion and buy time. The rest of the fight was with BARs, Thompson USNS Marine Serpent - Angel of Market Time submachine guns, M-1 Grands, 45’s and possibly M-60 machine guns. The Captain said its better to take them on at our convenience than be surprised at a later date . HMAS Perth D-38 was on station to rescue Mattaponi. U.S Navy ships were limited by Congress to operations below the 20th parallel at this time. Capt. Foster enhanced the possibility of capture by telegraphing his moves with the concept of an unrep holding area and slowing to 4 knts. However, deck logs don’t disclose when the Repel borders team was formed. Deck logs do show an unrep holding area, Tonkin Gulf , being implemented on the 16th, 17th, 18th, 28th, 30th and 31st of Jan 68. High Noon on 28 Jan 68, Mattaponi goes above the 19th parallel with the same right angle and east west and west east course changes as before. We weren’t surprised by Pueblo’s capture. Key Dates 23 Jan 68, USS Pueblo AGER-2 was captured by North Korea. 30 Jan 68, I Corps cities and Marine bases were attacked early in the morning. 31 Jan 68, US Embassy in Saigon, South Vietnam was attacked early in the morning. On North Vietnam’s calendar, Tet started on 30 Jan 68. On South Vietnam’s calendar, Tet Fletcher class destroyer, 369 ft, 175 built during WW2, armament 5-5”/38, 10-40 mm anti-aircraft guns, 7-20 mm anti-aircraft guns, 10- 20” torpedo tubes, & six depth charge stations. started on 31 Jan 68. An error that neither side was aware. An error that tipped their hand, a quite costly error. Fletcher class destroyers fueled by Mattaponi 1966-69. The Tet 68 Offensive started on the 30 Jan 1968 and ended 31 Jan 1968. 5”/38 was the preferred round of allied troops in South Vietnam. Cover: During World War I, convoys carried almost two million men to Europe. In this 1920 oil painting “A Fast Convoy” by Burnell Poole, the destroyer USS Allen (DD-66) is shown escorting USS Leviathan (SP-1326). Throughout the course of the war, Leviathan transported more than 98,000 troops. Naval History and Heritage Command 1 United States Navy and World War I: 1914–1922 Frank A. Blazich Jr., PhD Naval History and Heritage Command Introduction This document is intended to provide readers with a chronological progression of the activities of the United States Navy and its involvement with World War I as an outside observer, active participant, and victor engaged in the war’s lingering effects in the postwar period. The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. All errors and omissions are solely those of the author. • The Tale of the Cat by JACKSON SELLERS
The Tale of the Cat By JACKSON SELLERS Published in The Tin Can Sailor, October 2006 In the final year of the Pacific War, an admiral fondly nicknamed a Fletcher-class destroyer, a pioneer picket in a dangerous Fast Carrier Task Force tactic. And then an entire destroyer squadron adopted the newly christened destroyer’s “Tomcat” nickname as its fighting symbol. The USS Colahan (DD-658) was that original “Tomcat,” the first to paint the image of an angry cat on each side of her forward stack. The Colahan’s art- work was duplicated aboard other Fletchers in Destroyer Squadron 53 — the Uhlmann, the Halsey Powell, the Benham, the Cushing, the Stockham, the Twining, the Wedderburn and the Yarnall. For the rest of the war, DesRon 53 war- ships steamed as the “Tomcat Squadron,” and they carried their stack markings proudly into Tokyo Bay for Japan’s surrender. The Colahan acquired her “Tomcat” nickname during picket service under Vice Admiral John S. McCain, who twice took command of the fleet’s Fast Carrier Task Force, both times relieving Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher. It was Admiral McCain himself, grandfather of the U.S. sena- tor from Arizona, who bestowed the nick- name on this frontline destroyer. McCain first relieved Mitscher on 30 October 1944, just after the Leyte Gulf battles. Two months earlier, following the Mariana campaign, Admiral William Halsey assumed command of the fleet, taking over from Admiral Raymond Spruance. The Fifth Fleet became the Third, and Carrier Task Force 58 became Task Force 38. In general, Mitscher was Spruance’s carrier task force commander and McCain was Halsey’s, but Mitscher hung on under Halsey through the initial strikes on the Philippines, while McCain, then commander of a task group, Courtesy of Henry S.
