WEIRD AND UNUSUAL SPORTS Model Experimental Senior High-School of Patras English course 2014-2015 CURLING GENERAL INFORMATION!!! It is a winter sport It is played all over Europe and has spread to Brazil, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Korea It has been an official sport in the Winter Olympic Games Its nickname is"chess on ice" HOW IS IT PLAYED??? Players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding granite stones across the ice curling sheet towards the house. Each team has eight stones. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a game . EQUIPMENT Curling sheet Curling stone Curling broom Slider shoes UNICYCLE HOCKEY WHAT IS IT? It’s a team sport similar to roller or inline hockey but each player is mounted on a unicycle. THE RULES Both feet must be on the pedals Only mild contact is allowed Each team is composed of 5 players (plus substitutes) Women and men are allowed to play in the same game THE EQUIPMENT Unicycle Ice hockey stick Ball There are 4 national unicycle hockey leagues: One in UK One in Germany One in Switzerland One in Australia There are also clubs and teams in other countries like: France Denmark Sweden Hong Kong Singapore Korea But unicycle hockey is not an Olympic game !!! Zorbing WHAT IS IT? The “Hamster Ball “is an extreme sport that involves hurtling down a hill in a huge inflatable ball! It was born in New Zealand and now it is practised in the UK, New Zealand, Sweden, Estonia, Australia, North Pole, Canada, Japan, India, Thailand and in other countries. It is performed at commercial locations, where prospective riders pay a fee for each ride or for a whole day's activity. This activity should help students to verbalize, question, and discuss definitional challenges of leisure, recreation, and play. In a short period of time, students should be able to utilize course definitions and content and apply their knowledge to specific activities as well as become familiar with non-traditional leisure activities. One instructional method that fosters engagement and learning is classroom structured debates. These structured debate formats typically include discourse and competition. In the classroom setting, employing structured debates can develop skills in critical thinking, organization and communication as well as help the student better understand the course content (Holihan & Baaske, 1994; Freeley, 1996; Lantis, 2004). Debate can foster discussion on opposing perspectives, dimensions of the topic and multiple views through the social interaction of the classroom (Fallahi & Haney, 2007).

1 JOHN JOHNSON COLLECTION OXFORD UNIVERSITY SOCIETY HOLDINGS IN THE JOHN JOHNSON COLLECTION The following list of holdings gives years for which material is held. It should not be inferred that the runs within those years are complete. For current Societies, material is being collected annually at Freshers‘ Fair, and societies are encouraged to send everything produced by them throughout the year. We are dependent upon the goodwill of the society, and thus holdings will not necessarily be complete, even for recent years. The last date for current societies is followed by a double dash, to allow for accessions beyond the date of this list (April 2004). Term cards and other non-confidential material have been incorporated into the John Johnson Collection from the University Archives, but correspondence is still held by the University Archive. A list of Societies for which correspondence is held is available in Room 132, and from the Archivist, from whom permission should be sought (and may be withheld) to view it. There is a further sequence of material in the Department of Western Manuscripts, mainly consisting of Minute Books and Correspondence. A list is available. Undergraduate readers, and others who do not hold "U" or "A" tickets must ask a senior member of the Society or of the University to apply to the Keeper of Western Manuscripts on their behalf, for permission to see this material, citing specific shelfmarks. Readers are also referred to Cordeaux and Merry's excellent Bibliography of the University of Oxford for references to O.U. This document consists of eight parts: 1: General Rules and Definitions 2: Racing Rules 3: Freestyle and Standard Skill 4: Flatland and Street 5: Unicycle Trials 6: Unicycle Hockey 7: Unicycle Basketball 8: IUF Achievement Skill Levels 1 GENERAL This Rulebook is intended to govern all unicycle competition sanctioned by the International Unicycling Federation, and can be used as a guideline for other competitions. The major sections are General, Racing, Artistic, Games, Trials and Skill Levels. Various charts and forms that supplement these rules may be published separately. 1.1 These Are Official IUF Rules All IUF Unicons (International Unicycling Conventions) must abide exclusively by these rules. Further rules may be added to cover specific situations, but they may not override the IUF rules without prior approval by the IUF Board of Directors. All additional rules must be published well in advance of international competition, and published together with registration forms. National or local unicycling organizations may have their own rules. Though they may use IUF rules as a basis for their own rules, in national or local competitions, those rules can no longer be called IUF rules. To get proper results for Unicon qualification it is needed to follow the IUF Rulebook as described above. Any national organization that wishes to get its modified rules approved by the IUF for a national competition must submit a proposal to the IUF Executive Board at least 90 days before the start of the given event.
