Science’s Corner: Have you ever wondered how animals living in the seas of Antarctica survive in those frigid cold temperatures? Well, a species of octopus living in Antarctica, called Megaleledones, actually thrive in these temperatures. Why? Well, you’ve probably heard that octopuses have blue blood and this is because of a protein called haemocyanin (hemocyanin). Hemocyanin contains copper, unlike the protein hemoglobin, found in humans, which contains iron. When oxygenated, the hemocyanin protein actually appears blue in color! But the purpose of the protein is not to make the octopus’s blood appear interesting. Hemocyanin actually works to improve oxygen supply of the animal, which protects the octopus from the freezing temperatures, because oxygen supply to the tissues isn’t compromised.
