Il 3 maggio del 1970 al volante di una delle quattro Gulf Porsche 908-3 (che divideva con il messicano Pedro Rodriguez) stabilì il giro record sul percorso di 72 km in soli 33’36” alla media di 128,571 km/h. Una prestazione che -ufficialmente- nessuno è riuscito più a migliorare finchè la “Targa” si è disputata come corsa di velocità. A distanza di 36 anni dalla storica impresa sportiva, lo abbiamo rintracciato a Turku dove vive e lavora. Ecco, in esclusiva per Sicilia Motori, i suoi ricordi di quella gara… edizione n.54 della “Targa Florio”, disputata nel quasi 130 km/h di media (128,571). Ricordo che nel primo turno di guida ero dietro al mio compatriota Hans Laine, che correva con lo stesso tipo di Porsche nostra, ed era impossibile sorpassarlo. Nell’ultimo turno finalmente ottenni il miglior giro. C’erano altre auto sul percorso, naturalmente, ma erano così tanto più lente che non ci impiegai molto tempo a sorpassarle. Non piacevo al capo del Team Porsche, che mi fece correre con un nume- ro basso di giri motore. Dopo seppi che ero 1.400 giri al di sotto della massima erogazione di 8.400 giri al minuto. Così feci il mio tempo con 7.000 giri, che significa che avevo 50 cavalli meno di quelli che avrei potuto avere. Capii di essere stato veloce in quel particolare giro soltanto perchè alla fine avevo imparato il circuito col cuore. Ma con potenza piena sarebbe stato sicuramente un giro più veloce! Abbiamo con- cluso la gara al secondo posto. Io correvo sempre per vince- re. Per cui il record da solo non mi soddisfò.     Leo Kinnunen – a success with Porsche The Finnish driver Leo Kinnunen celebrated his greatest victories with Porsche – but not as a classic works driver. Instead, he enjoyed a successful career at John Wyer’s Gulf team. Leo Kinnunen’s situation was not unlike that of Brian Redman: while the Brit had to cede the limelight to his teammate Jo Siffert, the Finn found himself in the shadow of Pedro Rodríguez. However, the stars of the John Wyer team in 1970 and 1971 would not have enjoyed such success without these partners who were almost every bit as quick as they were. The 1970 season saw Kinnunen and Rodríguez win the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 1,000 Kilometres of Brands Hatch, the 1,000-kilometre race at Monza and the 1,000 Kilometres of Watkins Glen, with each victory achieved in a Porsche 917. In 1974, Kinnunen became the first Finnish entrant in a Formula One World Championship race. However, unlike the generation of Finnish drivers such as Keke Rosberg, Mika Häkkinen and Kimi Räikkönen who followed in his footsteps, Kinnunen was unable to thrive in the world of Grand Prix racing. Kinnunen’s performances in the World Sportscar Championship nevertheless earned him quite a reputation, with his lap at the 1970 Targa Florio proving a particular highlight. In the extremely lightweight and nimble 908/03, he completed the 72-kilometre course in a record-breaking time of 33 minutes and 26 seconds. This was over a minute faster than the time that had been set by Vic Elford the previous year and was considered unbeatable.

This unfortunate member had only last month discovered (and then only by chance) that the Club actually published a magazine. I’m not sure how he had slipped through, however the constructive criticism and advice he offered has resulted in a review of how we communicate with our members. Look forward to a covering letter with your membership card renewal which will explain some of the “ins and outs” of the Club that us old hands maybe take for granted (this will also be sent to all new members) and more use of Facebook to advise of, for example, the magazine going live. This should hopefully capture ALL our members and open it up for any others that may be interested. Thanks Trent, for taking the time to highlight an issue none of us was aware of, rest assured the Committee realise that effective communication with our members, and the wider community, is a cornerstone to the Club’s continued success. There’s an old saying “the more things change, the more they stay the same”. I was reminded of this recently when reading a book called “Fifty Years with Motor Cars” by A.F.C. Hillstead. Hillstead was one of the founding members of Bentley Motors, manufacturers of the quintessential English “between wars” sports car. His experience with selling cars went back to the very early 1900’s and he was involved with W.O.

Chairman, chief executive, chief designer, head chef and bottle washer at Lola Cars Ltd., Eric did it all. Myth has it that the name Lola, came from a song in the “Damn Yankees” show – “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets”. In 1950’s, trained as a quantity surveyor and living in the southern suburbs of London, Eric and his cousin Graham became enthusiastic members of the 750 Motor Club. Remember that in these post-war years there was very little of anything to race with in Great Britain. 750 Motor Club members generally built their own cars, based on the pre-war Austin 7. Amongst motor racing luminaries who were members of this club are such names as, Colin Chapman, Brian Hart, Len Terry, Frank Costin, Len Bailey and the inimitable Major Arthur Mallock – who I raced against in 1968 when everyone had gone to rear engined F2 cars – except for Major Mallock, who drove his own front-engined creation with skill, bravery and great determination. In 1957 Eric and cousin Graham pooled resources and built the Broadley Special. The “Special” featured a sold rear axle, swing axle at the front and a home-tuned version of the Ford 1,172 cc side-valve engine, first produced for the Ford Model C before the war. Quickly successful, Eric must have been smiling quietly, in his own modest way, when he won the major 750 MC Trophy – presented by arch-rival, Colin Chapman! In 1958, Eric was joined by long-time friend, war hero Rob Rushbrook who became works manager and went, first in 1963 to Slough, then in 1970, with Eric to a new workshop in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire where Lola remain today.

Many drivers swear by the creations of shoemaker Francesco “Ciccio” Liberto, who has been making footwear for race-car drivers for more than fifty years. We drop in on the master—together with Gijs van Lennep, winner of the last great Targa Florio. Of course he still knows every last curve throughout the Madonie mountain range of Sicily, from the extended bends to the spine- chilling hairpins. On the road to Cerda, about an hour southeast of Palermo, Gijs van Lennep steps on the gas. His destination is a small shop on the edge of the historical center of Cefalù, a town said to be one of the most beautiful in all of Italy—più belli d‘Italia. At the moment, however, van Lennep only has eyes for the road stretching before him. “In many places they didn’t even have guardrails,” he recalls while steering the Porsche 718 Cayman vigorously into the next sharp, blind curve. Hundreds of thousands of spectators used to line the course of the Targa Florio, the infamous endurance race through Sicily’s mountainous countryside. Van Lennep’s memories of the wildly gesticulating fans he raced by are still as fresh as ever. That was a while ago—forty-five years, to be exact—and he’s now seventy-six. Van Lennep and Herbert Müller won the last Targa Florio as a world championship race in 1973, driving a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. Eleven laps of seventy-two kilometers each.
