ABOUT THE FESTIVAL (Legend/History/Myth)

The Kodiyettu Mahotsavam is an annual festival celebrated at the Sankara Narayana Temple in Ramanthali during the calendar month of Meenam. The presiding deity of the temple believed to have been consecrated by Parashurama is Lord Sankara Narayana. The idol of the Lord is a six-feet tall figure in Panchaloha. The right half side of the idol represents Lord Shiva while the left half represents Lord Vishnu. The east facing temple has a Gajaprishta Sreekovil and three poojas are conducted. The sub deity is Bhoothananda and main offering at the temple is Kadali (plantain).

The Kodiyettu Mahotsavam commences with the Kodiyettu or Kodiyettu flag hoisting ceremony. Many devotees participate in the six- Thidambu Nrutham day festival to offer prayers and seek the blessings of the Kalavara Nirakkal Lord. Thidambu Nritham is the main attraction of the festival. Kolkkali Kalavara Nirakkal, Kolkkali, dance programmes, Bhajans, and Bhajans religious speeches are some of the events spread over the Ezhunellippu first four days. On the fifth day, the ritualistic Ezhunellippu and Pallivetta Pallivetta ceremony are conducted to the accompaniment of Percussion Music traditional percussion music. On the last day of the festival, Cultural Events Palliunarthal and Prasadamoottu are conducted. The festival concludes with the ‘Kodiyirakku’ ceremony.
