One Story, Three Centuries: Anachronism and Sociopolitical Commentary in the Graphic Novel Adaptation of Das Fräulein von Scuderi A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In the Department of German Studies of the College of Arts and Sciences by Acacia Moraes Diniz B.A. Universidade de São Paulo May 2015 Committee Chair: Tanja Nusser, Ph.D. Abstract The 19th century, more than any other it seems, has provided us a never-ending source for adaptation. From musicals involving Charles Dickens’ orphans and Victor Hugo’s French revolutionaries, to the inexhaustible work on anything ever put on paper by the Brothers Grimm, Western societies seem obsessed with the 1800s. Observing this obsession as a whole, I have come to the following hypothesis: stories written during the 19th century are still influential and draw contemporary audiences because their major themes – in a sociopolitical and historical perspective – have been haunting the Western world since those times. E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novella Das Fräulein von Scuderi is an exemplary case. Adapted numerous times, as an opera, a film and, most recently, a graphic novel, its sociopolitical commentary on justice systems and violent interrogation techniques are as relevant now as they were in the 19th century. Alexandra Kardinar and Volker Schlecht’s graphic novel adaptation emphasizes these aspects of Hoffmann’s novella through the insertion of historical curiosities, documentation on historical figures and, more importantly, the use of anachronistic elements in scenes of the 17th century, which provide the reader with a link between the three centuries involved in this story: 17th, 19th, 21st. -

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Tales of E. T. A. Hoffmann by E.T.A. Hoffmann Creator / E. T. A. Hoffmann. Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann (24 January 1776 – 25 June 1822), better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (he changed Wilhelm into Amadeus out of his admiration for Mozart), was a German author of the early 1800s, the early Romantic era, known for his Gothic and fantastical stories. Born in Königsberg, Prussia (today Kaliningrad, Russia), he became a lawyer, following the family tradition, though without much enthusiasm, as he was drawn to music, literature and the arts. He entered a career as a civil servant in Prussian Poland, held a position in Warsaw and had a young wife, when, in the course of The Napoleonic Wars, French troops captured the city in 1806 and forced the Prussian administration to flee. This led to a troubled time in Hoffmann’s life during which he faced poverty, separation from his wife, and the death of his infant daughter, while looking for employment all over Germany. For the following years (spent in Bamberg, Leipzig and Dresden), Hoffmann worked as a theatre manager, music teacher, stagehand, decorator, playwright, and musical director, but neither of these jobs lasted so long or was so well paid as to put him out of financial troubles. In 1813, he was again overtaken by war when the family experienced the Battle of Dresden. Nevertheless, Hoffmann in 1809/10 achieved breakthrough both as a writer and music critic. But only when a twist of fate allowed him to resume his civil service career in Berlin, he finally enjoyed financial security. -

This article hypothesizes that the German novel, The Life and Opinions of Tomcat Murr (1819−1821), by E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776−1822), is as strong a formative influence in terms of structure and satirical perspective on Sōseki’s novel, I Am a Cat (1905−1907), as other satiric contenders. It pursues this argument by examining correlations between these two polyphonic novels which mix many registers and discourses in a similar way. Biographical, historical and literary analysis underpins this comparison. Keywords: Hoffmann, Sōseki, satiric, grotesque, Tomcat Murr, cat-narrator 1. Introduction There are many affinities between the German novel, The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr (Lebensansichten des Katers Murr, 1819−1821) by E.T.A. When applied to women’s criminographic narratives, it can be read in terms of a challenge to the hegemonic belief in male writers as the founding ‘fathers’ of the crime and detective genre. This study will examine women’s criminous narratives in Britain, North America, and Australia from 1860-1880, with the purpose of bringing to light women writers who have hitherto—and for the majority—been excluded from what has been seen as the masculine crime canon. Men have long been expounded in critical work on crime and detective fiction and women writers have frequently been eclipsed by male authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, and Arthur Conan Doyle.
