HOLZMINDEN INTERNEE LIST (Sept 1917 – Dec 1918) Updated: 29 March 2013 HOLZMINDEN INTERNEE LIST (Sept 1917 – Dec 1918) Updated: 29 March 2013 DISCLAIMER: This is a partial list, as the exact number of POWs is unknown due to Holzminden POW camp’s transient population – as no definitive records still remain, the exact numbers are impossible to ascertain. Some POWs were incarcerated briefly, while others from its opening. This list has been compiled in good faith and while every effort has been made to confirm details, any errors or omissions are unintentional. NOTES: The details below denote service and rank at time of Holzminden incarceration, although some individuals may have transferred from other services prior, and also may have gone on to promotion after the war. AGE 1918 states age at the time of repatriation from Holzminden in December 1918. Some POWs were captured as members of the Royal Flying Corps, but were repatriated after the service’s conversion to the Royal Air Force in April 1918. • British and Colonial Police Medals By: Paul Fanning
BRITISH AND COLONIAL POLICE MEDALS BY: PAUL FANNING Like their militarycounterparts, police and constabulary forces throughout the Empire have fought, died, or "just been there" and have been issued campaign, commemorative, long service, and gal- lantry medals for the past 150 years. No less than Britain’s high- est gallantry award, the Victoria Cross, was won by a policeman in 1902: Surgeon-Captain A. Martin-Leake of the South African Constab- ulary. However, in my opinion, medals thus awarded to British and colonial police forces are perhaps some of the least sought-after in the vast field of medal colle’ct’ing. This article will discuss only campaign, commemorative, and long service medals issued topo- lice. (Other works have dealt with gallantry and meritorious awards far better than I can here). CAMPAIGN MEDALS: Very early in the major campaigns, it became difficult to sepa- rate the para-military police forces from the Imperial forces. Ex- cept for the 1939-45 Defence Medal, most military campaign med- als issued to police have been to colonial constabulary and police forces. The first medal, according to Maj. L.L. Gordon, was issued to Indian district police for the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58. The most prolific issue of any single campaign medal of the Vic- torian Era to police and military was the Queen’s South Africa 1899- 1902. That medal, and the less numerously awarded King’s South Af- rica 1901-02 were given to such famous police forces as the British South Africa Police and the South African Constabulary, a host of state police, and local town police.
