2O NOTES ON THE ARTICLE "ORDERS, DECORATIONS AND MEDALS OF THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA" DRAGOMIR M, AcovI~

It was, as always, with great pleasure and interest that I read the article by Dr. K. G. Klietmann in the April 1988 issue of The Medal Collector. The article was well documented, but the blac-k-- an--~-d-YJhite reproduction of the illustrations and the lack of physi- cal description of the awards, perhaps makes using the article a bit difficult. That is why, with the kind permission of Dr. Klietmann, I would add the following notes that may contribute to the general know- ledge of the most recent version of Cuban awards. The notes are limited to color descriptions of the badges and ribbons, and the number of classes of each described award (I am stressing the word described, since the present awards system in Cuba is extremely rich in decorations and medals - probably nearly a hundred of them - and may best be observed in the recently installed Numismatic Mu- seum of La Habana. There are two rooms dedicated to orders and medals: The first room displays pre-revolutionary awards - inclu- ding the rare Order "AI Merito Mambi" - and the current orders and medals; the second room displays a modest collection of Latin Amer- ican orders and medals). HONORARY TITLES

Golden Star of the Hero of the Republic of Cuba: The Star is made of gold. The ribbon is enamelled in colors of the Cuban flag. Golden Star of the Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba: The Star is made of gold. The ribbon is enamelled in colors ol the Cuban flag. ORDERS Order of Jose Marti: The Badge is gold. The ring encircling the medallion is enamelled white, and the surrounding wreath is green. The ribbon (in contrast to the official and described widths of the stripes) has a vermillion stripe a little narrower than the white and kingfisher-blue lateral ones. Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes: The badge of this single class order is gilt. The five-pointed star is white enamelled, and the protruding points of the pentagon are enamelled red. The ring sur- rounding the gilt medallion is enamelled dark blue. The ribbon is divided in (heraldically) right half, which is kingfisher blue, and left half, which consists of three equal stripes - vermillion, white, and kingfisher blue. Order of Plaza Giron: The badge of this single class order is made of gold (or silver gilt?)~ with the ring surrounding the gilt central medallion enamelled in white. The upper part of the badge is com- posed of two flags: one at the ~heraldically) right side enamelled blue and white; the other at the left side enamelled red; with a white enamelled five-pointed star at the junction.
