CHAPTER ONE i Archaeological Sources Maria Kneafsey Archaeology in the city of Rome, although complicated by the continuous occupation of the site, is blessed with a multiplicity of source material. Numerous buildings have remained above ground since antiquity, such as the Pantheon, Trajan’s Column, temples and honorific arches, while exten- sive remains below street level have been excavated and left on display. Nearly 13 miles (19 kilometers) of city wall dating to the third century CE, and the arcades of several aqueducts are also still standing. The city appears in ancient texts, in thousands of references to streets, alleys, squares, fountains, groves, temples, shrines, gates, arches, public and private monuments and buildings, and other toponyms. Visual records of the city and its archaeology can be found in fragmentary ancient, medieval, and early modern paintings, in the maps, plans, drawings, and sketches made by architects and artists from the fourteenth century onwards, and in images captured by the early photographers of Rome. Textual references to the city are collected together and commented upon in topographical dictionaries, from Henri Jordan’s Topographie der Stadt Rom in Alterthum (1871–1907) and Samuel Ball Platner and Thomas Ashby’s Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome (1929), to Roberto Valentini and Giuseppe Zucchetti’s Codice Topografico della Città di Roma (1940–53), the new topographical dictionary published in 1992 by Lawrence RichardsonCOPYRIGHTED Jnr and the larger,MATERIAL more comprehensive Lexicon Topographicum Urbis Romae (LTUR) (1993–2000), edited by Margareta Steinby (see also LTURS). This book sums up briefly the results of researches, extending over many years, in regard to the fate of the buildings and masterpieces of art in ancient Rome. In his work upon this subject and upon his large map Professor Lanciani has searched hundreds of volumes of municipal and ecclesiastical records, besides examining several thousand separate documents ; and he has ran- sacked the principal libraries of Europe for prints and drawings showing the remains of ancient Rome at differ- ent periods. Much of the new material thus collected will appear in fuller form in an extensive work, compris- ing several volumes, which will be published in Italian under the title Storia degli Scavi di Roma. The present volume is a forerunner of the larger work. -

Dixon This essay deals with an episode in the career of classical archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani (1845–1929), director of excavations of the Roman Forum from c. 1877 to 1886. Despite his success as a scholar and excavator, the Italian government dismissed him from the archaeological service for improprieties in 1890. The major charges against Lanciani reveal the tensions between the city of Rome and the Italian state on issues related to owning, caring for, and displaying the nation’s antiquities. Significant social, economic, and political changes in the decades after the establishment of the new nation fueled the tensions. During the pinnacle of his career in the mid-1880s, Palombi 2006: 42), and Carlo Ludovico Visconti (1828–1894), Rodolfo Lanciani (1845–1929) made significant from a long line of papal commissioners of antiquities discoveries in the Roman Forum and beyond. As the state- (Palombi 2006: 45–46; Lanciani 1894b; Ridley 1992: appointed director of excavations in Rome, he had led the 142–150). With Visconti, Lanciani explored Portus, then campaign that exposed the entire Forum from the Temple owned by Prince Alessandro Torlonia (1800–1886), of Concord to the Colosseum down to the level of the Via a member of the prominent family of papal bankers Sacra, and uncovered, if not fully explored, most of the (Dyson 2006: 39–40). -

Ideological Biases in the Urban Archaeology of Rome: a quantitative approach by Giovanni Ricci & Nicola Terrenato Introduction This paper intends to take stock of the situation of urban archaeology in Rome. It is based on a comparatively detailed review (enabled by a new systematisation of the evidence through the means of a Geographical Information System (GIS» of all the stratigraphic excavations carried out in the city in the last century or so, within the perimeter of the Aurelian walls. The data collection includes quantitative parameters such as the volume of excavated deposits, the number of contexts and the periods represented. This work allows us to assess reliably for the first time the situation after two of decades of intensive work in the city. -
