  • Piercings and Passports Exploring the Social Mobility of Adelaide’S Metalcore ‘Scene Kids’
Piercings and passports Exploring the social mobility of Adelaide’s metalcore ‘scene kids’ As young people continue to confront transition issues such as school-to-work pathways, they are concomitantly developing their own social and cultural priorities and responding to them in new and innovative ways. This process warrants a greater focus on young people’s identity work as they navigate their transitions through increasingly fluid social and cultural environments. Drawing on her current PhD research, Paula Rowe focuses attention on Adelaide’s ‘scene kids’, a community of interest based on a subgenre of heavy metal music. She utlises Bauman’s (2000) liquid modernity thesis to parallel the social dynamics of ‘liquid’ metal subgenres with those of the ‘liquid’ modern world. Exploring the social processes of scene kids highlights ways in which socioeconomic circumstances can affect young people’s level of engagement with lifestyle options. This in turn raises questions as to how “scene kid identities” might impact on other life pursuits and social transitions. by Paula Rowe outh transitions have dominated the youth research agenda for several decades, with a continuing focus on structural processes and institutional arrangements that Y shape and constrain young people’s holistic development, particularly in geographic locations characterised by conditions of social and economic disadvantage (Heath et al. 2009). More recently, there has been increasing interest in the ways in which young people’s identity work intersects and influences various social transitions within school, domestic and broader social contexts, and vice versa (Stokes & Wyn 2009). Despite the known social, economic and psychological constraints of marginalisation, young people still manage to find a space in which to express their identity and live a “life of one’s own”, yet not enough is known about the ways in which young people use cultural affiliations and lifestyle choices to express their identity and demonstrate personal agency in their social worlds (Miles 2000; Shildrick 2006).

  • Interview from Guitar World Magazine ROB ARNOLD of Chimaira.Docx
Interview from Guitar World Magazine: ROB ARNOLD of Chimaira GW: What inspired you to play guitar? RA: A buddy of mine had just gotten an electric guitar and an amp. I was super stoked about how good it could sound with a little distortion and a whammy bar. Then I started seeing some of my idols and the things they were doing with a guitar on MTV, and I was immediately hooked. I told my mom that I needed a guitar. Sadly, but not unfortunately, she got me an acoustic. GW: What was your first guitar? RA: After the Acoustic, my first "real" guitar was a neon-yellow Ibanez. It came with a little Peavey combo for about 400 hundred bucks. My dad thought I was crazy; he was pushing me toward a more mildly colored sunburst Fender, but I wasn't havin' it. A flashy guitar hero movement was underway, and a flashy looking guitar seemed the way to become a part of it. GW: What was the first song you learned? RA: It was either Metallica's " To Live or To Die" or Megadeath's "Symphony of Destruction." Both Songs have monster riffs that greatly appealed to my young ears. GW: Do you remember your first gig? RA: I was about Fifteen years old, and my band at the time scored a gig at a "musicians night" show. We were told to arrive with our gear; all of the other bands would play on our equipment, and we'd close the show. When about five or six hundred people showed up, we gave ourselves a pat on the back, thinking it was due to all the flyering and promoting we'd done for the show.

CLIENTS DELUXE GATEFOLD LP “The unsettling touch of a gnarled chapped hand tugs at my wrist. A shiver of uneasiness surges through my body that is almost enough to mask the nauseating aroma that surrounds him. “Hey Mister. Got a cigarette?” I quickly pull my arm away as small black insect crawls from his sleeve and falls to ground. My imagination is flying. What happened here? How did it come to be this way? And there are millions just like him. We are all just like him. We are all clients.” Taken from a passage in “Clients” THE RED CHORD has been cited as one of the most influential crossover bands of the hardcore, grind and metal genres. They have been referenced, featured or interviewed in the majority of pertinent heavy music periodicals including Revolver, AP, Metal Hammer, Terrorizer, Unrestrained, Decibel and Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles. This year looks to be the bands biggest year yet, with their new record and some huge tour plans to follow including The New England Hardcore & Metal Fest as well as a co-headlining tour with Bury Your Dead. ARTIST: The Red Chord TITLE: Clients So what should fans of THE RED CHORD’s previous work expect? “It’s a very different album than Fused FORMAT: Deluxe Gatefold LP Together in Revolving Doors. I personally think it’s a lot heavier and angrier, but we’ll let you judge for yourself,” states vocalist Guy Kozowyk. To say Clients is thought provoking is a mere understatement as it HOMETOWN AREA: forces you look at society’s unfortunates and wonder how they became the way they did.

Spawned from Central Virginia, SAINT DIABLO is proud to answer the call to arms by bringing a fresh and unique tone of Hardcore Metal and Latino melodies to heavy music! Since 1995 the band has had 8 independent releases. In 2003, the band released their debut album which featured the grammy nominated artist Anousheh Khalili on “Why Now?”. Also, the singles “Senoria Paranoia” and “Renaissance” pushed the band through new barriers and helped land a spot on the 2003 Eat’M Showcase in Las Vegas and Salem Or-be Tour featuring Busta Rhymes in New York. In 2008, the band released “REPUBLICA” through 925 Records. The band has also been featured on many nationally released compilations produced by Project Independent, StreetTeam.com, and Royal Blunts. SAINT DIABLO prides itself by performing on stage, and bringing a raw energetic live show to the fans every night. “It could be a venue with just the door guy and the bartender or a place that’s slam-packed with people… we will rock it the same” says Justin Adams (guitar). Touring is the band’s lifeblood, and being known as “tour dogs” is what this band is all about… Sharing their life’s work with a devoted fan base that stretches all over the country, they think of their fans as friends and family. Without them, SAINT DIABLO is nothing. The band has logged as many as 200 shows in a single year, and has supported (or toured with) bands such as Slayer, Drowning Pool, Chimaira, Hatebreed, Devil Driver, Soulfly, Fear Factory, Mushroomhead, Gwar, Flaw, Busta Rhymes, and many others.

If my years as Secretary were days of the week, it is now Thursday. If you are willing to be the next “ASIH Sec” please step forward so that you can begin your training, my weekend starts at the end of 2020. This role is both challenging and fulfilling, and perhaps it was never more so than in the rather tumultuous year of 2018. More on that in my reports. The ASIH Board of Governors are scheduled to meet on Wednesday, July 24th from 5:00-7:00 pm in Ballroom 1 of the Cliff Lodge. This is the 99th annual meeting of the ASIH; many thanks to Al Savitsky, Catherine Malone and Marty Crump for chairing the local host committee this year. President Cole plans to move for blanket acceptance of all reports included in this book that cover society business for 2018 and 2019 (in part). The book includes the candidate information for the 2019 elections that will take place after the meeting via electronic voting. These exempted items will be acted upon individually.
